Hey guys? It just occured to me that our estimated ship dates may be based on Shanghai time. Which is good for us folks in the West of the West, because that's 16 hours ahead of us. E.G. My Notebook left Shanghai 1:39am tomorrow.

Unfortunately mine's still reported sitting at the Shanghai FedEx facility as of 8:39pm today (and has been since yesterday).

Glad yours is on its merry way though.

They are definitely Shanghai time, I got an email on the night of the 25th stating that mine shipped the 26th.

As for the glossy-vs-matte discussion, I feel we should be happy we have the choice, and leave it there.

Yeah, me too. It was killing me - well, still is...

... what's wrong with us?!?

You better hope it is not over Hawaii, that jet would be seriously off course. They fly to Alaska, change crews, then on to Memphis I believe.

Frack!

Seconded. This is one of those very polarizing subjects that gets people pretty heated pretty quickly, but for what it's worth, I agree with Konfabulation. Glossy, to me, looks tacky and ostentatious. For a computer that I plan to actually use, I wouldn't have anything but a matte display. ...And in a few weeks, this (matte display) powerbook will be replaced by a (matte display) c2d mbp. glory be.

Definitely polarizing... A month ago, I would have agreed with you 100%. But then I spent about 2 hours using a glossy MBP and really liked it. I gave it another serious look at the Apple store a few days later and then bought a refurb one with a glossy screen. I've had it almost a month now and love it. I don't have any trouble calibrating the color on it to match my other matte screens (mostly Dell and Samsung) and I find it very pleasing to the eye, even for long periods of use. It does catch some more glare, but it also handles bright environments with high ambience (outdoors especially) far better than a matte screen.

I wouldn't say that glossy is the way of the future.. A lot of this is personal preference and now that I've been using the glossy, I would say it's more of an environmental consideration. It does have distinct advantages over the matte screen for certain applications, just as the matte display is superior for others. The best advice I can give is to try before you buy. If you are unable to do so or are not sure, then go with the matte screen as you're probably already familiar with what you'll get and you won't be disappointed.

Well, according to the forum poll, the matte-lovers are the sensible Mac majority :)

EDIT: oops sorry, meant the main MacRumors poll at http://www.macpolls.com/

Yeah, I confess this matte screen is pretty much garbage if you want to use it outside. I didn't know the glossy screens handled that sort of light better, but it's hard to imagine them handling it any worse. Luckily for me, I have enough work to do that I never get to see the light of day, anyway...*sigh*

Come on guys, give up the glossy vs matte. there is a thread about it over in the portables subforum. It's not big deal, I ordered mine is a glossy, is that such a big deal? Like come on, every one have a different preference, and I happen to LOVE the big old CRT's, and glossy just seemed like the logical choice in my mind.

It's the buyers decision not yours, the only really thing you can say to people asking advice is to try it out for them selves, since it's for them, not you.

Anyways, back on topic, how are my fellow Canadian's shipping dates? I ordered mine on Wednesday evening, 2.33GHz 15" stock + glossy, and it says the 31st, but it seems like alot of people are getting their BTO ones, well atleast in the states.:)

ended up going with the matte. if i'm going to be writing papers and doing work on this for hours on end, i wanted something that i knew would be good for my eyes as well as something that i am used to. plus, i never work outside, and dont usually watch movies or look at pictures on my computer.

TV types not created equal

Man, every TV has a glossy finish. All the high end displays, however (Apple, Dell) have matte finishes.

Every TV does not have a glossy finish. Plasma TVs are made of glass and are shiny. Don't buy one for a room with tons of ambient light or you will see reflections. LCDs are made of non-glass materials and don't reflect the same way. Some show almost no reflections at all. Check out the difference at a store - a good one will display their plasmas in a darker area so the flaws won't be as apparent. LCD black levels aren't as good but are much better suited for a bright room where reflection will be a bigger problem than blacks.

2 cents pooror.

I agree, sorry about earlier post - it's not for this thread. Everyone has opinion (clearly) reagarding glossy/matte. Each to his/her own, let's post some pics and specs from new machines as they arrive. Mine should be here a little later than some, I'm guessing Wednesday.

Hear hear! And think of this: If we didn't have the choice, the MacHaters would be beating us over the head with "and you have to get it matte!".

Can we consider this difference of opinion just that, a difference of opinion, and move back to being fellow fanboys? ;)

Can somebody post their tracking information? Pref. someone on west coast who has their machine about to arrive. I'm looking for an "example" of the tracking past Shanghai.

Mine is still there, no? Or is it on the long plane flight? I think I'd see some other tracking data if so but unsure.

I ordered the 2.33GHz 15" stock + matte, ordered to Canada. It's had this listing:
Oct 28, 2006 3:55 AM

Departed FedEx location

MEMPHIS, TN

since, well, October 28th at 3:55am (thats saturday!). Even with a 24hour delay in updating the status you'd expect it to be updated by now, that still gives it over 19hours! yeesh, maybe i'm getting a bit too obsessive about checking...

We're on the same plane.

I have the same info as the other guy you quoted

only diff is my data was transmitted at 11:29AM on Oct 29

cause I'm just better than you are :p , just playing :D

so yeah, its been in the air for 11 hours, and I think the flight is about 17.5, so only 6.5 more hours til it hits the states (as in NY, cause that's what I googled my info with, even though I live in MD)

edit:
so yay! dgoss, patrick, and I are on the same plane!, we must see who gets it first!

RACE RACE RACE!

:) lol. Now I feel a lot closer! Cool, we're in this together, at least to Alaska. Or is it Tennessee?

It's funny, I can't freaking wait, and I've got a 17" MBP sitting here (this is it's replacement coming, going back to 15"). I'm really into this order - for the anticipation I have you'd think I have a PowerBook 5300 here or something.

Unfortunately I'm not sure how to interpret this - I had seen "left origin", but then the next day it says "at local FedEx facility".

So "Left origin" may not mean the same thing as "on the plane". :(

I'm on the same flight as well, once it gets to Memphis, it's only 150 miles to my home in Arkansas. I should have my Sister (She's a FedEx employee) go out to hub and grab it for me and drive over to Memphis and pick it up...

Ordered before 8am Tues... to Oregon.
