I will take pics of the glossy screen. I haven't seen any pictures of a MBP with glossy screen. I know it's not a popular option but it's kinda hard to believe there on no pics of it somewhere on the internet.

I'd love to see these pics as well, while I am waiting for my 17" glossy  . Basic optical physics tell me that glossy is the way to go. It remains a matter of taste, I guess.

I have to agree, it all comes down to taste.

I received my MBP yesterday and it's amazing. I ordered the matte and was unsure for a while, but once I saw it, I was so relieved. I prefer it much more to glossy. No glare ever and everything looks well lit from all angles. Really glad I went with the matte. I was too used to my powerbook. :)

UPS guy just arrived

hey Zic, how did the mbp look in the package UPS gave you? Was it just in some nondescript box, or was it the shiny retail box that you walk out with in the store?

I just found out that mine is getting delivered to my house on Tuesday (cant intercept at depot), have a sharehouse with a crowd of new flatmates: I like em a lot but dont know em enough to trust them with my macbookpro! Is it obvious that its a laptop inside?

Unboxing Video?

Just got my laptop in!!!!

Expected ship: November 6th, Actual Ship: November 3rd.
3 days earlier! (1 business day, but who counts by business days?)

I happened to take an unboxing and startup VIDEO, does anyone think I should post this? Or is that taking "h0t unb0x1ng pr0n" too far.

Knock yourself out man!

There is no way they will know what is inside from looking at the exterior packaging. My MBP came within a brown box with no markings whatsoever, infact all the packages did (keyboard/mouse etc) except for the printer. It's also so incredibily light, I'm sure (unless they have some prior knowledge) they won't suspect a thing.

edit: dgoss (see below) is right, I had forgotten about the shipping label. The desription on the label is 'APPLE PART'.

It depends - from anything more than a few feet it's just a brown box. I'm pretty sure my shipping label still showed Apple - so if I were left to hold and examine box I might think there's at least something nice in there.

I don't know the whole reasoning (they'll know you have it pretty soon) - but if it's to keep it from disappearing before you ever see it, I wouldn't let anyone sign for it no matter what - I live in a quiet residential neighborhood and most of my neighbors probably make more than I do - but there's no way I'd do that signature release Apple has even if FedEx ignores the request.

Enjoy the new MBP! They're awesome.

hey guys, thanks for your replies. As I say, I like & trust my flatmates, but don't know em that well, so you never know...

if the MBP comes in a fairly subtle box like you described, well, that gives me a bit more confidence. I'm sure it will be fine. :)

Unfortunately, UPS will take ANY signature to accept the package, without an authorisation form from me - I guess if they took it to the wrong door, a neighbour could even sign for it with an illegible signature, and nobody would ever know. Which is a fairly poor security - if they needed MY signature before releasing the goods, it would be no problem. Especially considering that you need photo ID to take delivery of £80 concert tickets, but they'll drop £2000 of computer off where-ever they like.

hello america :) iam a new italian user of mac. For my switch i have choosen the new c2d 15" (standard).

I have checked the properties and i can't understand why mac os tells me that the total space of the disk is 111,41 gb (instead of 120gb), so i tryed with whatdisk and other programs and it was always the same!!!

moreover the So takes 18GB!!!!! so i have only 93gb...

Do you think it is normal? What about your hard drive?

baci e abbracci

In just about any computer, the OS uses up some of the space on the HD. There might even be some restore info saved. I am new to MAC OS so, I hope someone can take this explanation a bit further.

I know that with Windows XP the above is true, depending on the PC manufacturer.

BTW .... 120 minus 111 is 8 not 18 .... LOL :D

:)

It all has to do with how things are measured. Drive manufacturers report the capacity of their drives in terms of decimal bytes were 1kb = 1,000 (10^3) bytes. Programers and programs use binary byte count and a kb is 1024 (2^10) bytes. A gb is defined as 1Kb^3 (^ = **, exponentiation). So your manufacturers 120 gb drive is seen by a program as 120*(1000^3/1024^3) or 111.76 gb. Then allowing for minor differences in manufacture 111.41 gb is quite reasonable.

As for the amount of HD space occupied by the OS is the same no matter what the drive capacity is.

Hard disk manufacturers have different definitions of the prefixes giga/mega/kilo/etc from the rest of the computing world. Giga means 1024 to OSX but it means 1000 to Maxtor. So what is marketed as a 120GB drive is really 111GB

I was making fun of everyone who was checking the status of their shipping every 5 minutes. Once mine shipped, I found myself doing the exact same thing. As luck would have it, mine arrived at the Baltimore sorting facility today at 6:45am. This probably means it won't be delivered until Monday so I miss the whole weekend. It stinks since I live 5 minutes from the stupid airport.

FexEx rocks. 45 Minutes after it arrived at the FedEx center it was on the truck. I now have my MBP C2D!

Hitachi 120GB drive

Well, I picked a new MBP up locally (got the stock 2.16GHz model). I opened System Profiler to ensure I'd gotten what I paid for, and lo and behold, I have a Hitachi 120GB drive in mine. I've seen the discussions on the 5K160 160GB drives being PMR. Does anyone know if the 5K160 120GB drives are PMR as well?

Yup, that's a PMR 120GB Travelstar ;)

So are we still correct in assuming that no one received their 17inch C2D-MBPs yet?

I'm still reporting a 11/15 delivery date and getting more frustrated each day.

Cool -- and to think I almost said forget-it and went the BTO route just to get the 160gb PMR drive. :)

Nice bonus in the box today.

Actually, no, the 120 is LMR. We only make one PMR drive available to purchase at this point - the 5k160.

It does have have the IrMnCr "superhead" though...

The part number that MauiBoy posted via his screenshot was for a 120GB 5K160, not a 5K20. The 120GB 5K160 is indeed a PMR drive.

Actually look at the numbers. 5k120 is 5200RPM x 120gb. The 5k160 is 5200RPM x 160gb

There is no 160gb 5k120.

As for the PMR on the 120gb. I'm afraid I can't talk about that ;)

Did you read the spec sheet and look at the part numbers? 5K160 is a SERIES of drives... the 160 means the MAX drive size in that series is 160 GB. Last time I checked, there was no such thing as a 5200 RPM drive.

Check out the second page of the PDF (right-hand pane) for info on decoding the part number...

HTS541612J9SA00

54 = 5400 RPM
16 = MAX Size in SERIES (160 GB)
12 = Size of THIS drive (120 GB)

SA = Serial ATA

Indeed, when I searched the part number on the Hitachi site, it is listed as a 5K160 (120GB) drive. The 5K160 series comes in 40, 60, 80, 120 and 160GB varieties.
