Can someone with a Hitachi HTS541612J9SA00 120 GB hard drive let me know if their's is giving off a "Geiger counter" sound?

This is actually my second C2D MBP (the first one had a Fujitsu drive) and this one makes much more noise (but it would probably be normal volume level non-Apple machines) when accessing data.

Wmm

Well, my update is this: I ordered the 17" late in the game and it's expected to ship on the 13th. I also ordered a wireless mighty mouse (I hope it doesn't suck like some here have said) and it's waiting for my mom to pick it up at Fed Ex. They've made three attempts so far but she was never home and I didn't think to mail out the signature waver form so now she has to go pick it up. I'll mail out the form when the laptop is shipped though, I'm tired of waiting.

Under normal usage, it should be really hard to hear it at all, I'm a bit concerned.

I've heard is the same old problems with the MM... I wish I would have bought a different one... I had this great idea of buying products while I had money before I got my computer. So I bought the wired MM and well turns out I really wish I could get my money back... Never used it. still sealed in box, but I just really should have got a Logitech... I really enjoy the way it looks though:cool:...

I didn't like the Mighty Mouse at first, but I've use it for over a year and it's great. I wouldn't want to use anything else. Don't hate. :)

I absolutely love my wireless Mighty Mouse - except for those times that I hate it. :D

No, really, I love using it. The scroll ball is wonderful. The downside is that the scroll ball tends to get gummed up on a semi-regular basis - that's when I hate it. Trick seems to be to hold the mouse upside down and work the ball quite a bit in various directions to loosen up whatever crud has gotten in there. I wish there was an easy way to pop the hood and clean it, like we used to do with the old mices' rubber tracking balls.

Basically I think it's yet another case of Apple coming up with a splendid product concept where the engineering has some catching up to do, if that makes sense.

I tried using the "signature waiver" form for FedEx, and they refused it! Even though it's offered on Apple's website, and I printed and signed it, leaving it on the door, it was refused as "company policy!" The FedEx dude left with my MBP, left his own slip stating that he'd "try again tomorrow!" Fortunately, I called the dispatch office, and they called him to return to my home an hour later, and I had my MBP in my eager fingers that day!

Anyone else have this experience with the "signature waiver" using FedEx?

No ....

But I sent my daughter a laptop and several other items all in a very well packed container. All items in the package were worth about $5,000.00 USD. The delivery guy left it on her front porch, did NOT knock, forged her name and left.

She called them raising all kinds of he!! when she found the box, and they told her that she had signed. She informed them she had a witness that she had not only not signed, but that no one had knocked on the door that day at all. FedEx finally admitted what they had done.

So...

If you want something delivered and want to waive sig, move to Lakeland, FL ... Hmmm .... you might have your stuff stolen off your porch though, and they will say you signed for it.

Every IBM/Hitachi notebook drive I have ever had makes that clicking noise on seeking - but it should not be that noticeable, unless you are in a really quiet environment.

Good advice, Reverand Wally!

I had actually thought of that exact scenario, but was going to be gone for, literally, a few minutes, and didn't want to miss delivery (since I wouldn't be home again until 2 days later to receive delivery)! FedEx's policy, as they relayed to me, makes the most sense, since they don't want a package to stolen, and then blamed for its loss (or have a driver succumb to the temptation of stealing someone's shiny new MBP! )

I hope that your daughter's issues were resolved, and the guilty FedEx person flogged!

I've ordered a Wireless Mighty Mouse with my MacBook Pro on the basis that it seems to be the only half decent bluetooth mouse that doesn't require a sodding dongle of some description. Based on my last trip through the mouse selection of a large electronics chain in Belgium all the various Logitech and Microsoft mice either needed a USB dongle of some description to be plugged in even if your computer already has bluetooth built in or came with some sort of recharging/reception station that is no use to a mobile user. I like the idea of the 360-degree scrollball, particularly since the tilt wheel on my current Logitech really isn't responsive in the horizontal movment, and the clamshell click feels nice on the Mighty Mouse. I'm not sure how well it will hold up for games and I still feel that the side buttons weren't implemented properly (too much squeeze required to activate) but I'm going to give it a go.

Of course, all I need now is the sodding MacBook Pro. Only 3 more weeks to go, apparently...

Kelmon,

That is good to hear; I am planning on ordering a 17" MacBook Pro and wanted a mouse to go with it. Like you, I am not keen on something with a dongle, and am hence inclined towards the Mighty Mouse Wireless - I just get a little concerned when I see all the negative posts/threads about it.

An alternative is to get the Logitexh MX Revolution for the office, and just use the trackpad at home.

I am still debating, but am likely to go with the MMW - I'll keep you posted.

Anyone know how to cleanly uninstall Fan Control?

I didn't really need Fan Control for my C2D MBP, but I thought I'd play around with it. But after uninstalling it, the settings I'd made with it remained in place; the fan was on too high.

Evidently it works by changing settings in two .kext files. But how can I restore them to the original settings for the C2D? Anyone know what they are?

Even if a mouse comes with a Bluetooth dongle, you shouldn't have to use it if your computer has built-in Bluetooth. The Mighty Mouse is my third Bluetooth mouse - I didn't have to use the dongle with Microsoft's Bluetooth Intellimouse Explorer (or whatever it's called), nor with the Bluetake mouse I had more recently; both came with dongles which were promptly discarded.

Of course if the mouse's dongle doubles as the mouse's charger, then you're stuck.

The mouse is pretty bad for games, but I realized that I bought my G5 for work and stopped playing games on it. I tried Doom 3 and Halo on it - it doesn't feel right. I used the Xbox 360 wired controller for Halo and that feels like the Xbox game, so that's pretty fun. It's probably better to get a Logitech or a Microsoft IntelliMouse if you want to play games.

I have the wired mighty mouse, and a razor mouse, and a microsoft mouse and use loads of computers with different mice. Point being that i really think its quite good. i didn't have to get used to it, just picked it up and it was ok. Like everything it will come down to personal choice, most mice are so similar and work in the same way, Mighty mouse has the scroll ball which makes it nice to use on a mac.

Glossy or Matte?

Delayed Shipping

Long time lurker, first time poster...

I've been reading these forums for well over two years now, and never really felt the need to post, however, with the release of the new MBP I'm horrendously ticked off and could really use some support. Plus, I've been reading many posts from users upset about their shipping dates, so I figured I should chip in and complain too. Like many of you I've been anxiously awaiting the new systems since May, and ordered a 15"/160/glossy at 8:55 the morning of the 25th.

I was originally told 5-7 day shipping with an expected shipping date of November 3rd. Though the date seemed late, I was encouraged by the many users here who recieved units early. The 3rd came and went. Nothing. I checked my order page Saturday morning, and was absolutely stunned to see that my status had been updated to shipping on or before Nov 29th!

I called Apple and was told that there was a hold on my particular unit and that the date was indeed correct and that the earliest I could see my laptop would be the 22nd. They advised me to cancel my order and reorder if it was that important that I recieve my unit earlier. Needless to say, I'm livid, especially when I read about users who ordered a week after me and have already recieved theirs. Grrrrr....

Oh, and I'm a college student.

/end rant

I ordered on the 24th a couple of hours after the store came back up (specs in sig) and have heard nothing yet either. ive tracked it (both with apple and on the apecode site) and it appears to have shipped, though im upset that it has taken so long, especially as this notebook is critical to getting my design work for university done...just my luck eh. i just hope they haven't sent me a lemon to top it all off :(

This has happened to me on multiple occasions with both FedEx and UPS. I've never actually had them forge a signature, but I've had them just leave signature required packages. Or I've had them sign off on it with their driver # or something.
