Yes, this is how demographics works. :rolleyes: Seriously, go back to math class, this isn't how the ratio works given the percentage of US white Americans is 72% as of the 2010 Census. When you figure out how to appropriately calculate the differences, give us a response.

How demographics works? Please clarify without the histrionics or ad hominum. If you have better data, please provide. And no math calculations were applied in the above. These are statistics taken from Census bureau and in the Macrumors article involved.

Are you saying that there are sufficient whites employed at Apple??:confused:
 
Why is Apple even stooping so low as to play race politics?

Apple hires pretty good employees so who cares what race they are? Is it wrong to hire people of certain races? Is there a such thing as "too many" of a certain race?

Let Al Sharpton start his own company and hire who he wants. I'm sure it'll be great!
 
A lot of you have posted very valid points. But IMHO any company needs to look at their workforce and see if they are not diverse. If your boardroom and workforce is all male and your company markets to women and men. Then you really need to think if your all male workforce is missing something.

It would be great if we could all just see people who their talents than what they are. That utopia doesn't exist.... And probably never happen until the human race becomes so mixed, we can no longer tell who is what.
 
Just hire the best people you can. Who cares about colour, age, sex.

Why do companies need to produce these reports? Seems such a waste of time and money.
 
This day in age, it's important to satisfy "everyone" with diversity, every one is so easily offended and hyper-sensitive that it's pathetic.

Quite a bit of that might be that people--particularly minorities--have always been offended, but have only recently found a voice and/or recourse for that offense because so much of the offensiveness comes from the majority.

Not all cases, of course.
 
As a society, we crucified Sterling. The general consensus is that the man is a pig, a scumbag and deserves to be ousted.

Though what actually raised that ire was probably the least offensive of his many known acts. Funny how people only got outraged when he was directing his racism towards celebrity.

Not only that, but let's be real, the players on the court say racial slurs all the time, every game more than likely and nothing happens to them. They aren't forced to retire from the NBA. Why?

And in MY opinion, if someone like Michael Jordan called someone white a white racial slur, it would have been NO WHERE near as a big deal as Sterling's incident.

In the first case, because they are not in positions of social power and are understood to be making comments in the heat of sport. Oh, and because they aren't billionaire white guys who have created and maintained much of their wealth through racist housing practices--as Sterling was known for well prior to the TMZ recording.

In the second place, hypotheticals like that aren't very useful. Particularly because they ignore the long history of race-based discrimination in this country that makes one group's comments much more actionable and harmful than another's.

Apple is one of the most successful marketers in the world - if not the most successful. What exactly are they missing? Do women and blacks not want Apple products, or something?

You only lose when you force race quotas. Its racist and not logical at all. Apple has thrived on being logical. Tim is going down a slippery slope with this crap.

Also, if you think Apple should have a workforce that reflects their target customer then they should be hiring MORE whites. Not less.
 
Think about the demographics in the USA for those that own Apple computers, iPads, and iPhones. Mostly Caucasian customers?

Probably right.

It's changing rapidly, and the customer base is much more diverse now than it was 10-15 years ago. I did not know many Black or Asian people that owned a PowerMac G4 or G5, for instance.

But the MacBooks are very popular and everybody is buying them, all kinds. They are the flagship computer for Apple these days, and powerful, elegant, and well-designed to boot. All the MacBooks...

The popularity of the iPhone and iPad has brought Apple a huge number of converts to the Mac platform, and it seems like they are coming from all ethnic backgrounds and not just Caucasian.

As a young white educated male in the UK, I am genuinely concerned about my future in terms of employment. We have active discrimination here in certain businesses/local government. Companies seek to hire a certain quota of minority employees. I have zero problem with anyone based on their race, religion (hate all religion equally) or sex, but when I might very likely be passed up for a job because the company needs an extra minority recruit to make the numbers look good I suddenly for the first time really start to feel what it must be like to be discriminated against and I think it's pretty disgusting.

If you want an end to racism this will only seek to inflame it as I will raise hell if this ever happened to me, not too mention become deeply inbittered. Active discrimination is no different to me than bare faced ugly racism. What next? My kids being refused a place at the good local school because an inner city minority needs a better chance in life? Or a total misrepresentation in Parliament of the actual demographic makeup of the country? Different bathrooms in a restaurant to 'make it up' to those once oppressed? Infact I think I actually read about the first one happening here in the UK.

I'm sick of this sort of thing, it's needs to stop right now. I hate any sort of racism or discrimation but it's a two way street. You shouldn't be allowed to oppress the majority simply for being in the majority!
Most of the UK and US is white, and most who go for these tech sorts of jobs are white males. Why is this so bad? Hire the best person for the job, any less is discrimination. This is extreme ultra left wing thinking at it's very worst.

There's it's different because there's physical differences between races, just like there's next to no black swimmers in the Olympics or whites or Asians in the 100m. I don't have a problem when it comes to sport as there's scientific reasons behind it rather than racism.

I don't believe there's differences in intelligence between different races, only differences in culture and education.

Your echoing theories similar to Nazi science….. they studied physical and cerebral differences between the races. Their studies found out that Asians have the highest intellect, closely followed by Caucasians.

And of course, the Nordic Master Race was the physical and athletic gold standard, according to their findings. Jesse Owens was just a fluke. :D
 
As a white guy Silicon Valley Engineer who finds it harder and harder to find chip design jobs (thank God I'm in a good one right now), I really wish the Valley went back to the "we don't give a rat's @$$ what you look like, just be excellent and proactive at your job" model that used to prevail here.

What really needs to be looked at is the incredibly monolithic look most chip design teams have these days. They're not white, they're 90% Indian-Pakistani, with a smattering of Chinese people here and there. This in no way matches the output from engineering schools. H1B visa abuse by employers has truly changed the Silicon Valley landscape.

And if you look at the salaries of these "90% Indian-Pakistani, with a smattering of Chinese" you will find that their salary / employee packages are at times half of the going industry rate.

Also, it has been my experience that this H1B visa crowd does not produce the best work and typically works on later generation or maintenance technical work. I have had my share of dealing with overseas engineers of lesser ethics with faked diplomas and no respect for company IP. One I saw deported after a few things caught up to him.

Solution, as usual, going independent. Place yourself on the open market where your sheer merit and skill set is valued above nothing else. I have seen the H1B crowd sink or swim in that environment as you find a strong team. Later, start your own company and go the Sand Hill Road business pitch circuit.

This isn't me trying to say one race is better than the other or for such and such reasons, the semantics aren't important. I was just trying to imply that in sport there are very real and well documented physiological differences between races. Nothing inferior or superior was implied. I can assure you I am 100% for equality and true democracy (not the Micky mouse democracy we currently have in the US and UK). I just believe affirmative action/positive discrimination or whatever you want to call it is pure and simply racism. Or more accurately, racism against the majority. It has to stop.

Has anyone asked what they are trying to aim for as their race/gender quotas?
Are we talking % of total US population?
% of pop in surrounding area?
% of pop between a certain age group?
% of pop worldwide?
% of pop studying the required degrees? - most interesting question for me as the % of white males with comp sci degrees is probably far higher than 55%

Has anyone thought why having 60/70% of your skilled workforce as white male such a downright terrible thing? I'm not saying it's right to aim for this just that if it works, it works. That's kinda what built the US economy into a super power. Much like it was German woman who rebuilt their economy into a minor super power after the war.
I'd hire a whole senior management of black or lesbian woman if they were the most competent employees. One thing rings true in all business is that money is king and if the best people at making that money are white/black/Asian/female/gay it doesn't matter.

Good luck getting a job with that attitude. If you are really worried about being discriminated against for employment try being a black person who is historically and regularly discriminated against and then even after they've been hired treated like they aren't as smart even when they outperform their peers.

According to the Economic Policy Institute College Educated Black people are twice as likely as a white person to be unemployed. Being a white male isn't the worst thing in the world that could happen to you. You could be black and your chances of unemployment would double simply by changing your skin color.

Correlation =/= causation. Black males are also more likely to have gigantic rims on their cars. They're more likely to prefer rap music. Will I automatically have big rims on my car and like rap if my skin color changes? Think.

I didnt say correlation =/= causation. I just stated the facts. The fact is that black people are more likely to be unemployed and discriminated against for employment even now. He's scared some 'unqualified' black guy is going to get hired over him. No one is going to hire someone to do a job they aren't capable of. If I get hired for a job over him it's because I've already worked at several of the largest companies in the world and have more experience than him. It has nothing to do with me being black at all.

I notice no one complains when companies actively discriminate against older people...especially in the tech world. I'd be interested in those diversity statistics.
 
It's silly to call for diversity when Tim Cook himself continues to hide his homossexuality. Is this the kind of example he wants to set at Apple? "Stay hidden and don't tell anyone about it"?

Does he hide it? Or does he just not go on about it as he doesn't see it as important?

I hate how Jony Ive hides his heterosexuality. He never talks about his girlfriend/wife. He should be ashamed.
