Can’t figure it out either. How do you even split items in the dock?
open an app Safari for example. drag up to bring up the dock. Touch and hold for a second on mail then drag it to the left or right side of the screen and let it go to enter split screen view. Ensure settings, general , multitasking , Allow Multiple Apps is turned on. Also this feature requires an iPad Air 2 or later from memory !

I can't figure it out either.

I meant I can’t figure out how to split view an app from somewhere else other than the dock. Using an iPad Pro.

I have had some battery drain on both my iPad Pro 9.7 and my 7+. It’s not unbearable though as I’m near a charger most of the time.

There are a couple of ways, I think (both of these assume they aren't in the dock):
  1. Launch the two apps.
  2. They will show up in the recents section of the dock. You can then drag them into split view
  3. I *think* if you bring down the spotlight search and drag them down from there they split view, but it might only work if you have a physical keyboard since I hit cmd-space on my external to bring up spotlight.
But yeah, it's a little janky.

Yeah, your #1&2 points are how I work around it. Good idea on #3, but you're right it'll only work with a keyboard.

My Logi iPad Pro 9.7 keyboard keeps making iOS 11 ask for some kind of update.

The animations and gestures need fine tuning and adjustments. There's some battery drain and it's not the smoothest most times.

Bugs are expected and even with the problems, once you go to 11 on an iPad, you really can't look back. It's so much better. :)

For the skeptics out there about iOS 11PB1 all I can say is I’m very impressed considering this is just a first beta. I have had no issues whatsoever arise apart from one app crashing on startup. I’m using this as my daily driver and been having no issues so far and I’ve been doing a lot of testing.

The most annoying bug for me has been the app switcher bug which isn’t that bad when you think about it.

It can only get better from here and so far I’m impressed.

This is why I would rather wait for more seasoned betas before jumping in. ;)

That's why you shouldn't put early betas on your daily driver. Good thing this is my backup phone. It's a beta. Of course it's going to have bugs and the point is to find and report them.

Is there anyone else who simply can't sign up for the public beta? I select "sign up" and come back to this page where it says "sign up" again. At the top of the page it does say I am signed in. I think other people see a "get started" button or link instead? It is an iPad Air 2.

Have you tried different browsers, disabling adblock etc?

I think opening up file management on a phone or tablet is a big mistake. Look, Apple is all about making the tablet/phone experience easy and efficient, yet having users agonize about where files are located is a holdout from yesteryear on antiquated desktops and laptops operating systems. Having to know where your photos are located, or being anal and creating numerous sub-folders for files is not something that should be brought into the mobile platform. There is really no reason for me to care where files are stored as long as the app I am using allows me to access those files quickly and efficiently through its own interface. The only reason why Android has a file manager is because Google wasn't bright enough to cut out this useless feature.

I think Apple is dancing around the idea of making iOS into a "work" OS for professionals and thing file management is a feature they require, but they seem to be blurring the lines in some areas while setting up fences in other areas. Why offer a feature that nobody is asking for like file management on a tablet opposed to offering touch on a laptop or mouse/cursor support on a mobile platform?

File management is an antiquated concept and the only people worried about where files are located on their iPad are anal retentive types that don't trust that a multi-billion dollar company knows how to store files optimally or can figure out how to remove old files when they are not needed anymore. If I save a file in Numbers, I really don't give a rats ass about where it is, as long as the file is accessible through Numbers when I need it. If apps can share files then they figure out where to find the files, this is not a user dilemma.

I've let go of the concept of "file management" years ago, this just feels like Apple is bringing back a legacy concept to appease "professionals" without giving real professionals the features they want.

Noticed it doesn’t show my Apple Watch connected in the Bluetooth screen but still get all alerts on my watch.

So, on the one hand I like having Pages and Numbers and other iCloud-enabled apps just having their own little iCloud area and not worrying about it.

The problem for me is, a lot of files I work with aren't inside those areas. Take Procreate, a drawing app I use. I can download custom colors and brushes. I have an iCloud folder for these and just import them via the app when I need to. I have a lot of these little disparate files floating around.

The Office apps don't really play well with iCloud. It supports it, but they are designed to work with OneDrive and Dropbox.

The files app tries to unify some of these disparate systems. It is not a complete solution since if I tap a Word file in OneDrive on Files, it opens the document in Pages. Maybe this will get fixed when MS updates OneDrive to fully work with Files.

I assume this is just DP 2, which was even worse on my iPhone 7+ than beta 1, in regards to overall UI lag and battery drain. May wanna wait for DP 3/PB 2.
