So if my iMac Mid-2011 does not Capability of USB-C or USB-A I can not update? And here is another reason not get the current ATV and the lack of 4K sad how Apple has slowed down putting things out ahead of its time Tim Cook really was not the best choice for CEO.
USB-A is a normal USB 1.1/2 port... Your iMac has 4 of them? Your Keyboard has 2 of them?

Trust me new Apple TV does look nice and the minor hardware changes are also nice but the fact it only support tvOS and ATV 3rd Gen iOS which likely will not get anymore updates or that ATV4 theonly way if I am not mistaken you can only update through USB-C or USB-A instead of through the Air like ATV3 is terrible since I have a iMac mid-2011.

Lets not for the lack of 4K, DTS-HD and 3D is another issue for a company like Apple that use to be so innovative putting out the best before any other competitors and I don't want to hear "well I don't have 4K so it's all good for me" just because you can not afford one does not mean other can't.

i think you are confused so lets clarify a couple things.

1. USB-C is the type of connector at the END OF THE CABLE which connects to the AppleTV. it has nothing to do with which computer you own. let me reiterate -- USB-C connector goes into the AppleTV and not your computer. USB-A is the connector you already have on your Mac.

2. Public updates will be done over the air, so if you're getting worked up about the beta requiring iTunes to be updated, that's just standard practice and it's been that way with the ATV2 and 3 for years. Relax.

[QUOTE="JonneyGee, post: 22191940, member: And I'm sure one of the the updates – perhaps tvOS 10 – will include direct updates instead of requiring it to be done through a computer.[/QUOTE]

The way I read it was that was just for the beta.

I wonder why they put in usb-c when they even include a lighning cable to charge the remote...

Wish list:

1) app folders
2) optional access codes for each folder
3) user adjustable HDMI CEC commands
4) an iPhone app to work Apple TV replacing the remote
5) using a TV connected to Apple TV as a secondary monitor for a Mac

Can we get this thread back on track please? Is the podcast app there on this beta?

Yes would be great to see the Podcast app back. I know it was reported that some folks had seen this on the rolling demo video for the new ATV at the Apple Stores so hopefully this and Remote App functionality is coming back soon.

"The update will require the Apple TV to be connected to a computer with a USB-C to USB-A cable, with the software downloaded and installed via iTunes."

What am I, a caveman?

Comment of the week

Apple is so bizarre sometimes. 9.1? Really? Why not just call it TVOSX? Or NeXTV? NewtonVision 1.0? As long as we're ditching normal naming conventions and platform hopping...

What's next? iOSiPad v1.0 and iOSiPhone v1.0?

That's must be some good stuff you smoke, can I have some?

THIS DOES UPDATE VIA WIFI.... They are strictly talking about beta installs needing a computer. Wow... this forum is full of fail. And 4K... nobody cares.

That's how Mac rumours rolls these days. People asking about battery life 10 min after release is standard.

How about an update where the sound works? Zero sound on my new ATV4, pure garbage. Returning.

Yes, must be totally apples fault and could not possible be you? I mean I heard about Apple TV without sound every day

Enough talk about 4K!!! Get over it and move on until Apple TV 4k is released next year. What a bunch of grown ass men crying about hardware they wish for and can't have...

As for the update, a dedicated music app/folder short cut would be nice. Not sure why I have to drill through countless folders just to listen to my playlists. Also, would be nice to rate music or see lyrics.

If the next update doesn't address this, I hope a developer makes a good music companion app. A visualizer app would be the icing on the cake.

It is a shame that I don't have a computer with USB-C capability lying around and not going to buy one just for this.

There fixed it for you.

Actually, I think that this can't be true. Surley any USB connection (USB-3 preferred) should be able to do this update.
You need a USB-C cable to connect the new Apple TV to any computer.

Finally found some inexpensive USB-C to USB-A 3.1 through www.primecables.com
Got it delivered the next day at a subway station in Montreal, that's AWESOME. I updated my AppleTV to the final release tonight, and have downloaded a few apps already :D

My other cable has been shipped, is being delivered November 25 through Amazon. I wish I could cancel it at this point.

Loving the Apple TV so far, but there are a few soft spots in its game that need to be addressed:

- Text entry sucks (allow entry via iPhone Remote app like before, allow Siri dictation in text fields, change the configuration of the alphabet/characters from linear to a multi-level grid, maybe use iPhone touch ID, etc..)
- Channel/app activation is a pain (would be nice if I could enter my cable company's credentials once and have them apply to all the different video apps, e.g. ABC, NBC, History Channel, etc.. instead of verifying each separately )
- Would love to see universal "recently watched", "favorites" and "watch list" sections on the main interface
- Folders or sections (so i can organize by "Video", "News", "Games", etc.. instead of having a huge pile of everything)

Maybe some of this is in the works, maybe it's all a pipe dream. I do hope they operate a little differently with TV OS, and are open to making changes more quickly than in the past. It's already a cluttered market and they need to separate themselves as a superior platform quickly if they want get any real traction. Its a good start, but needs some functional upgrades before it becomes essential and unique.

I really like the new one, and it was very much worth the money. However, as you have said, text entry is just not really acceptable. The combination of not being able to use a keyboard on the remote app, siri for text input (i was doing this via the remote app in the past), as well as the single line of characters really is terrible from a usability standpoint.

I have submitted this feedback to Apple, and hope others do too (as I dont think repeated posting on here will do the trick!).

I like your other suggestions too!

Got my AppleTV today. Here are my impressions:

- Remote is very cool (although mine wasn't auto-synced out of the box so I had to use the remote from my old AppleTV to get up and running; I imagine most people would have returned product to store but I powered through).
- App store doesn't have many apps and most of the ones it does have aren't that good looking
- Remote turns off my television but not my audio receiver :(
- Why must we always type using the dumb linear keyboard?...why can't we have our words dictated like on the iPhone?
- Looks like TV networks are beginning to realize that forcing users to have a cable subscription is a stupid idea; the network apps seem to have more (and more easily accessible content) than previously
- It's nice to have Apple Music on my TV; you can easily create playlists from the TV which is nice..why is that feature not on the iPhone??
- Icons in the iTunes store are bigger which means less is shown on the screen at one time; I kinda liked it better the old way but I guess I'll get used to this
- Plex on the AppleTV is AWESOME! The performance is SO much better than using the Home Sharing feature. You can scrub through movies without having to wait for buffering and stuff...why can't Apple get iTunes+AppleTV to perform like that? Also, it shows related movies in your library; it's a very clever program.
- The "Go back 30 seconds" Siri feature is great and works in Plex..probably other programs just haven't had time to test

Looking forward to:

- Using Siri to search and run Apple Music; that's gonna be SO great (we listen to music a lot at my house)
- Some sort of subscription service to get TV over internet
- Better apps, especially games

Not perfect yet but overall very pleased!

I must be in the minority but Plex really sucks hard with lots of buffering and some subtitles don't appear. I am using Air Video HD at the moment and absolutely love it.

I don't think we'll see Siri integrated into Music anytime soon so I'm hoping for a realistic upgrade that allows for more options when playing music like larger album art, visualizers, lyrics or least allowing to change the background color.
