Because this OS is largely built on the current iOS 9. They did the same with the previous Apple TV OS which followed the normal iOS version numbers fairly closely. Makes it far less confusing for everyone when you say "Make sure all your devices are running OS 10.3" rather than "Make sure you're running tvOS 1.4 or later, iOS 9.4 or later, and OS X 10.11 or later."

Except the released versions for tvOS (9.0) and iOS (9.1) are already out of sync. And there's no prayer or intent of aligning OSX versions with iOS versions. So you are always going to have to deal with three versions. Personally, I find it very confusing to try to sync with two similar-but-different release versions.

Please Apple, provide an option to reverse the direction of scrolling vs touchpad input. I want screen elements to move in the same direction as touchpad gestures, the same way they work on iOS and OS X. Right now everything feels like it's moving in the opposite direction I'm swiping.

YES Absolutely needed feature!!!

I believe you've written the stupidest thing I've read all day. Congratulations.

(.. and to clarify, tvOS is a derivative of iOS 9, but still different enough to justify a different naming scheme, so yes, it makes sense.)

Ok, thanks for the clarification Timmy. And good luck on Tinder.

Only not fully. The second-generation Apple TV originally shipped with "Apple TV Software 4.0", which ran on iOS 4.1 (the first-generation Apple TV runs Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger). And the current "Apple TV Software 7.2" is iOS 8.3. They've never been entirely in sync.

And, presumably, tvOS 9.1 is based off iOS 9.2, not 9.1.

If someone installs this, please please please check if there's an option to change the Siri input language in the Settings menu.

Very much needed! It's a strange ommision that I cannot set Siri to English just because I have the region (and apple account) set to Germany! And I doubt Siri (or anybody else) would understand my German..

Edit: saw later post confirming no such option in 9.1

Because you asked please so many times...

The answer is unfortunately no. There is still no option to change the Siri input language in the Settings menu, even on the tvOS 9.1.

Oh well, hoping for 9.2 then... Thanks!

tvOS betas are not as easy to install as beta updates for iOS and OS X. The update will require the Apple TV to be connected to a computer with a USB-C to USB-A cable, with the software downloaded and installed via iTunes

Is this just the betas that are hard to install and require a computer with iTunes? I've been wanted to go to an iPP and just use that for email and web surfing. Seem like you should just be able to grab updates from the App Store like iOS.
I've already ordered the ATV but may have to exchange it for another system if it's too difficult to maintain.

App Updates come right from the store, this is full tvOS beta update. tvOS public updates will likely be OTA. Your apps will still automatically update without you even knowing.

I can't believe they are not going to update the ATV 3 to have Apple Music. Really? The device they still sell in store new doesn't support Apple Music? I also can't believe they are having the UI's look completely different between the new and the old.

Apple Music is just a hobby.

Anyone know if the USB port on the Apple TV can be used to connect an external hard drive with media on it? I heard VLC will be an available app for the Apple TV... that would make it a great combo.

Not the port. However, you can use Plex to stream media to it quite well

I don't want to rely on another device being turned on. I want to keep things simple: plug in USB device with media and play it on the Apple TV.

If the Apple TV can't do that, then it's a useless product to me.

Sounds clunky. Plug something in and constantly have it cabled to another thing. Yuck. Wireless for the win

Has icloud photos been improved? I was disappointed that not all my photos and videos were available on the new Apple TV.

Back on point, can anyone confirm whether or not the scrolling changes mentioned include the ability to reverse the scroll direction so it works like all the rest of Apple's products?

How about Apple TV 3rd generation where is the update for Apple Music? I still see duplicates and albums separated don't tell me ATV 3rd Gen does not matter because it is iOS.

Ridiculous.
The above "Plug something in and constantly have it cabled to another thing" is done all the time and is not susceptible to interference.

So if my iMac Mid-2011 does not Capability of USB-C or USB-A I can not update? And here is another reason not get the current ATV and the lack of 4K sad how Apple has slowed down putting things out ahead of its time Tim Cook really was not the best choice for CEO.

I don't really fall into either category here of wires or wireless being my only way to do it, but I believe wires are still susceptible to interference.

Why would anyone spend twice, if not three times more than its previous version, for a device that practically does very little that is different? I can't believe Apple spent years working on this device and this was the best it could come up with.. A new chip, but hardly any different functionality.

http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2015/nov/01/apple-success-narrative-wall-street-expectations

Apple better be careful or its going to make that article above come true. They need to start coming out with products that surprise people again.. And get away from a singular focus, it seems, of coming out with products solely focused on boosting revenue to make investors happy. I think I read somewhere where Tim Cook talked about China soon being the most important region in the world when it comes to iPhone for Apple.. This company is becoming too profit driven, too much focus is being placed on beating wall street expectations, too much of the soul of the company is being sucked out by focusing on the financials and not the soul of the business. All my opinion anyways. I can't wait until Apple raises the price of iPhone, because that's almost certainly going to be coming soon.

Try it first
