Ouch

Wow... looks like Mail 5 is gonna eat up Sparrow. I feel bad for the developers, they appeared on the AppStore not too long ago and became one of the most downloaded apps. Now with apple doing this, I wonder if they will decide to stop development soon...

Its the same with spaces, it used to be a free tweak before apple formalised it.

For those who don't currently use it, check it out: http://www.sparrowmailapp.com/

I'm really excited about Air Drop. I also like the Auto Save and Versions features too. Actually, I'm really excited about all of the features mentioned. This will make me want to get a new Mac this summer.

Versions sounds good, hopefully a better interface than 'Previous Versions' in Server2003/Vista/W7 which is kludgy to say the least (particularly W2003)...

Airdrop doesn't sound too different to Dropbox though, depends if it needs a Mobile Me account.

Nothing too earth shattering so far, but still a worthy upgrade.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Mobile/8C148)

This is huge. The merging of OS X and iOS to usher in the next generational phase of computing.

What's wrong with hfs+? I mean, is a candid question.
On basically every Mac file system errors crop up over time. Not many, maybe a handful out of million files and folders. Just run any disk repair utility every couple of months and it will report some errors (which are normally also fixed by the utility).
More modern file systems like ZFS are more robust than HFS+ in this regard on top of offering additional features like snapshots.

Airdrop and Resume sound awesome. but I don't know how I fell about the new mail.app. Since I have 3 email accounts I manage in mail right now this might be a bit hard to manage them and all the folders I have to go along with it.

I don't understand why people are comparing AirDrop and Dropbox, AirDrop appears to be like the Home Sharing function in iTunes just for files. That's not how i use Dropbox. I use it to allow me to transfer files between PC's and Mac's at different locations.

I don't want to have to lug my iMac to College, just so i can transfer files.

Have i misread the AirDrop situation, or am i the only one who uses DropBox for long distance file transfers/storage?

Please could anyone with a dev account comment on compatibility with older systems. Particularly are the older white MacBooks supported, mines a 1.86Ghz C2D with intel GMA950 graphics?
I believe they're supported. I'm downloading the preview now to install on my 2.2GHz C2D with the GMA965. I'm wondering how the multitouch gestures will hold up on a machine that doesn't really support them.

AirDrop looks pretty cool, no more fumbling around for a big enough flash drive or enduring the insane slowness of bluetooth. And Lion Server being built in is awesome. I may have to look at the new mini's once they get thunderbolt as well. Hopefully they stick 2 ports in those since you will always have a monitor.

I was looking at joining the Mac Developer program and now this makes it way more tempting. But I need to stay focused on my iPhone apps for now. Maybe i'll join once I launch my current WIP.

I like the adoption of 'overlay scroll bars' from iOS.

Actually, I think this is a bad idea. I like being able to see where in a document I am by looking at the scroll bar. On a small screen iOS device, it makes sense to hide the scroll bar when not scrolling, but on a Mac, I'd like to see where I am. Hopefully, Apple allows us to 'always show scroll bar'.

Whole disk encryption is nice. Only new feature that I'm excited about so far.

Launch pad is like all the mini-finders/simple launchers there have been... pointless. It better be optional.

seems kind of lackluster considering it's a new kitty release. Disappointing considering the rumor hype.

Server

Not sure about the server integration. I am sure it is an add on installation like x11, meaning not installed by default. What is 10.6 server now if not the same thing? It is not like they are using a different OS...correct me if I am wrong.

I am concerned about apple trying to simplify servers for the masses. Not sure where apple is going with this, but I worry apple is quickly exiting the market where its server product can be taken seriously. They can try to automate a server as much as possible for a user, but the first time a server stops functioning correctly, a user will feel qualified as a tech. This will lead to many, many problems. Anyone in IT will tell you, the user thinks they understand it all, because they "already run this on there home PC and know how". Can not tell you how many times I have heard that one.

I just hope to God they updated the mail program from that BS squirrel mail.

I don't know if there was ever hope for resolution independence in Lion, but this pretty much quashes it. For a Summer release they'd need to give developers more notice (unless there's some magic way they're offloading all of that responsibility to the OS).

It's a polarizing debate raging on these forums that will never resolve, but I'm in the camp that really sees a benefit to "retina" (not 300 dpi) density in a notebook (or iPad). Looking at web pages on my iPhone, I know how text and icons *could* look, and it's really pleasing. As if it's a glimpse into the future promise of notebooks that only exists in our imaginations ...

Edit: I should say "Apple notebooks." I realize this already exists in Windows 7.

"Conversations" in Mail sounds a bit like how gmail displays mail. This has never worked for me, so I hope there will still be the option to sort/display mail in the way it does now.

I don't mind if Conversations exists, as long as there is the option for (whatever you call) the current way.

OS X server is an optional install that you select during installation. This isn't really much different to 10.6 server, it just means there is no additional cost for the server version

Wohooo, the more I hear about Lion, the more I am convinced that it will be an absolute awesome OS. Snow Leopard has been great for me and it seems that Lion will be another step forward. Can't wait!

Wow! Autosave!!

Apple is as always ahead of its competition. I'm sure other OS's will steal this great new 'autosave' feature as soon as they can.. No more lost documents when Pages or Keynote crashes once again.. And again.

Keep up the good work!

I assume this posted with sarcasm. Although as a newbie I have my doubts.

Ah, that's true. I use it for both transferring stuff from work to home and just syncing between PC/MBP/ipad on my desk. I can't remember though, does dropbox fall back to local transfer if the computers are on the same network? I know MS Mesh did that. (On the other hand Mesh got out of sync and trashed a load of files from all computers so it's not exactly a shining beacon of how to implement this well!)

As long as it's got some sort of security on it, or some way of trusting computers. Otherwise it's all well in the home, but in an open student network such as ours, who knows what would end up getting dumped onto computers and would be an obvious route for malware to spread itself. They'd have thought of that. Wouldn't they?
