Wow, nice catch. It really isn't just a "your CPU needs to be 64-bit" kinda thing, they're eliminating support for a number of Macs that don't have proper GPU support.

Important for developers: Starting with 10.7, you can ship a 64-bit only version without losing any potential customers. Everyone running 10.7 or later can run 64 bit code.

I hope not! That means its at least a year and a half away :p

nah... mostly to be next release. thgh i don't see why there's a really need to port to 64bit... still runs great on machines that have 4GB or less (unlike Mudbox....)

Just looked at THE LION promo video. Well this sucks, it's basically being turned into iOS for the desktop. WE WANT OS X back! Apple are destroying our desktops with this iOS crap.

Yours will work with both the 9400M and the discrete 9600M, you need the Santa Rosa late 2007 MBP, which has an NVIDIA 8600M in it, or later...

Oh, OK. That's good and bad news :D

The good news is mine will play nice with Mountain Lion!!

The bad news is I have been hovering over the BUY button on a MacBook Pro for weeks now and this could've been my excuse to go for it!!!

Thanks for confirming!!

In general I like what I see of OS X Mountain Lion since it adresses most of the "inconsistency" between OS X and iOS.

Notes on Mac was such a mess, Reminders linked in iCal too. iChat is useless since almost nobody use it, iMessage that is automatically used on all iOS 5 devices is a much better solution.

I love also that they bring notification. (sad for the "growl" team though)

Altough I would still love more "OS X only" enhancement, I still feel its a worthy upgrade for 30 bucks.

The addition of Messages and notifications is great and a no brainer.

No need for sand box applications with Gatekeeper when the application is signed.. though I won't hold my breath.

Unfortunate that Notifications and iCloud APIs are only allowed for MAS applications. Apple want MAS to be the defacto Mac software distribution ( Apple likes all the control it can get ).

I'm not a fan of this theming crap - i.e, iCal, Address book and now Apple will continue this in other applications in M.Lion.

Shame you can't turn OFF versions.

Overall, M.Lion looks pretty good. Looking through the specs, this is what Lion should have been first time round.

i never had any problems with Lion ever since DP1, not sure what everyones bitching about. i must be lucky i guess

I'm sorry, but are you serious?

"Inspired by iPad. Re-imagined for Mac."

States it all.

The better part of valour...

Sigh. More iOS nonsense in OS X.

I think these additions actually sound pretty good. I don't see where this is a less powerful OS at all. The iOS-inspired options do not have to be used/enabled from what I am reading. To me, this is evidence that Apple is committed to the Mac platform.

Hmm... I wonder what the hardware support will be like with Mountain Lion...

Will they drop support for the non-multitouch MBPs, for example?
Will they set the baseline at Santa Rosa or newer?
Or will everything supported by Lion be supported by Mountain Lion?

And... will it be a paid upgrade from Lion? Or will it be a free update via the AppStore?

I think that this update would be free, when iOS first started out it was like $10 to update your iPod touch to be able to allow it to run apps but eventually Apple changed it to free to update. I would think that they would make it free since you have to pay the $29 to update from SL to Lion

Just my take on the subject

What are you smoking? Everything Apple has released since 10.6 has been great. I'm new to OSX and only been using it for a year and a half and supporting it for longer but it's the best OS I have ever used. I've been a Windows guy my entire life and let me tell you, MS has had many duds.

If ANY OS is a dud from Apple, it would have been the latest 10.7 update release a few days back. It broke a lot of **** and people were pissed but that's ok. There are growing pains.

If Apple did come out with a hunk of ****, people would complain and not use it. Just like Vista, ME, 95. So on so forth. Apple is really good about giving a great experience. Leopard, Snow Leopard and Lion are no exceptions.

You might want to rethink your comments.

Really? Try releasing a product that doesn't allow Corp. users to login to there computers. In fact try releasing a Beta that does work and then release 10.7, 10.7.1, and 10.7.2 that doesn't allow it.

Reading comprehension here is so crappy. I don't go home and play WOW and fiddle around with Safari. I manage a huge corp. IT infrastructure. My needs are different from all of yours yet equally important. Try turning on the TV for the network I work for and remember all of that was produced on computers I manage.

Edit:

As I suspected most of the feedback posted on Apple Dev's site the last 2 years are being implemented. For example Mail Archive folders are now separate. Much cleaner looking and much easier to manage archives from one location if you have multiple mail boxes.

Can someone elaborate on how AirPlay mirroring works? Anything on your Mac screen will stream? So if I load up a video in VLC on my Mac, it will stream via AppleTV?

If you open a web browser, it will stream via Apple TV.
If you open a Microsoft Word document, it will stream via Apple TV.

You'll just have your Mac screen on your TV, without any cables.

anybody know what the system requirements for will be? will i still be able to use this on my 2008 unibody macbook (2ghz core 2 duo) or am i out of luck?

Wondering the same thing too.

Your Mac needs to be capable of booting into the 64-bit kernel. Apparently having a 64-bit processor will no longer be enough.

Your unibody MacBook appears to just barely make the cut. Rev A MacBook Airs do not (though the Rev B does).

No offense man but you have no idea of what you are talking about. The further integration of IOS is a definite plus.

are you using mountain lion on another partition on your harddrive or have you replaced lion with it?

how is the performance

Funny. I had AD working for every release of Lion thus far.

A lot of these comments are ridiculous.

"I wish they'd fix Lion before making a new OS."

All you're arguing is semantics here. Apple is "fixing" Lion. Who gives a **** if they call this update 10.7.4 or 10.8.0. It really doesn't matter what it's called. It's bringing new features and undoubtedly going to improve on things from the last version.

That said, I have been running Lion since day one and haven't had any problems.

Excited for many of these new features. Some people might call it "dumbing down" the OS, but I think it's improving it. Many of these updates are because of changes in technology over the past couple of years, and with these new technologies, more stuff is going on "behind the scenes" and making it easier for end-users.

Funny 75% of Jamfnation didn't. Your a Casper guy right. Go check it out yourself.

Also, AD integration was based on AD group nesting. For those of us stuck in flat environments it didn't work.

Looks like iMessage finally arrives with ML !!

This is what I thought of when I first saw the mountain lion.

"The files are in the computer?"
