Repairing permissions was the first thing I checked and sadly it's still scr*wed. It hangs on "estimated time: less than 1 minute" fffoorrreeeeevvvveeeeerrrr...

I get a lot of warning messages as well, which I've not seen before, not sure if I should be worried or not.

yeah, it stops there forever.

Nice quick work by Apple as usual.

I love how people are expecting extra features/options like improvements to Stacks... it's never going to happen. Deal with it (or hack it) :) I've never heard of Apple doing such a thing in minor updates (anything except bug fixes), and improved stack functionality would be a good selling point for 10.6.

Transparency's not going away either. Those who dislike it had better hope they don't take as many paid upgrades to finally eradicate it as they did with the pinstripes ;)

Actually, in Tiger, they improved Dashboard by adding a widget manager. That wasn't in 10.4.0 and after they added it, they began shipping Tiger as that version out of the box. I can't remember it was 10.4.2 or 10.4.3 but, it was an added FEATURE.

Weak

No fix for iDisk size and syncronisation issues - oh well, guess I wont renew .Mac next week then.

go buy a vista pc.

i've been on the mac platform since the Mac Classic came out so this isn't going to deter me,but that doesn't excuse any of the horribly bad project management of the OSX team and the fact of letting it be sold in this current state

tiger is fine and runs great on my mac pro.i have NEVER found a reason NOT to upgrade to the latest version of the Mac OS except for now.this is a first, since system 6
i have never downgraded my mac and never thought i'd want or have to.that was always a Windows thing
i am so mad this time around because of the sheer lack of quality apple has put into leopard and the multitude and severity of the enormous bugs
in our office we have tons of mac pros with this same configuration and they ALL have the exact same major graphics flaws in leopard ----- not in tiger. so this isnt some small intractable bug that they missed. :apple: has it so easy, they only have a very small number of configurations to support and test for compared to other OSes.but they screwed this up big time and either
a] didnt bother to fix it
b] didnt want to break their deadline so released it anyways knowing damn well how serious it was
c] didnt find the bug, which is the most serious of all since it is so readily reproducible

like i and so many others have said, leopard is not public-ready and should not have been released in this state.some of you have been lucky, nice for you.most of us have not been so lucky if the computer is used for much more than simple web browsing or checking email

maybe because they are not good?
they said it is not really faster than 7600GT, except maybe for DX10. And they are M.

8600M GT crashes a lot cause of crappy drivers that cause a memory leak in certain OPENGL games. Second Life is the most famous of the issues. It IS with the drivers and not with the games.

Much clearer, thank you. I think the problem is that everybody's system is different (to a degree) and everybody uses their system differently. I, for one, have not experienced any problems and have been EXTREMELY happy with my purchase of Leopard. In fact....everything, for me, has been for the better.

Having said that, I can appreciate the fact that some users are having growing pains, but that is to be expected. There were much bigger pains in the transition to Tiger....but most seem to have forgotten that or never experienced those pains if Tiger was their introduction to the Mac OS.

Strangely enough i didnt experience any issues with tiger, so yea you are right there are so many different variables that its not an exact science although at times consumers (like my self) wish it were, and get a little grumpy.

I see your using Logic 8, I hear it works like a dream.

some of you have been lucky
most of us have not been so lucky

"Some" versus "most?"

So what's that in numbers? 90% have problems? 99%?

Sure sounds terrible!

Conversly, I've been having TERRIBLE issues with Tiger on 2 of my 3 Macs for the last 2 months. I guess I should claim that "most" people are having trouble with Tiger because of it? And that you are just lucky to not have my problems?

no, they're not "extra features"

I love how people are expecting extra features/options like improvements to Stacks... it's never going to happen. Deal with it (or hack it) :) I've never heard of Apple doing such a thing in minor updates (anything except bug fixes), and improved stack functionality would be a good selling point for 10.6.

with stacks, it's not an extra or new feature we're looking for. it's the restoration of awesome function in tiger that they decided to take away for no reason (hierarchical navigation of sub-folders from the dock).

oh yeah, and the stacks icon thing would not be an extra feature either; it's just fixing an incredibly bone-headed mistake! has anyone said they like it this way? has anyone even figured out what they were thinking when they designed it this way?

EDIT: by the way, is there something we can do about these serious dock problems other than submit feedback on the apple site (and encourage others to do it as well? can we start a petition? take a poll?

Started permissions repair 'One minute' was the estimate...4 minutes in, my fans are on full (the Macbook is cool on my lap still thankfully) and its barely 2/3 done...

fair enough vassillios I did not quite ask that question. But after the rush of going out and buying leopard and spending hours on the phone to apple and many more figuring stuff out myself on a reletivly new piece of hardware, I couldnt help wonder if it wasnt quite ready for general release. Indeed part of the process of releasing a new OS invloves many customers discovering the issues themselves and reporting back to apple. Perhaps as thorough testing is practically impossible for Apple to do 100%.
I think it's a tradeoff between debugging and getting people new stuff quickly. The tendency has been towards the latter from all manufacturers over the last 10 years, and it's really accelerated since broadband has become more ubiquitous. I'm not sure where the right line is. There are a few minor annoyances with Leopard, but nothing catastrophic for me (I haven't lost data) and it did get working backup software out to the masses which is worth something.

There's a reason IT folks always stay a major rev behind the market. In a server room, reliability is everything so they'd rather forego a few features and run a fully patched revision. Consumers still tend to think newer is better though, and it burns a few people.

The first update I got was 39MB on my MacBook, but when I restarted it gave me an error message saying the update couldn't be installed. It restarted and I ran software update again and got an update showing 109MB. Currently downloading it now.

Is it just me or does Safari feel slightly snappier?

Well it doesnt work on my mac. I can't acces the Internet from my iMac. I am typing this from Windows XP. I tried everything and nothing works. All the utilities cannot fix my broken internet connection and it doesn't work on either Safari OR Firefox. Somethings truly messed up here. Everyone else so far can, can't they? Or is it just me...

I'm not sure if it's just my imagination, but Leopard sure does seem MUCH faster and snappier.

That and occasional inability to wake from a long nap are the main issues I have been having with Leopard.

Can anyone plug their D-Link into a hub and actually have their Bluetooth goodies or their system work?
I use a D-Link bluetooth dongle for my wireless keyboard although I will have to drop wireless peripherals when I move to the Mac Pro.

I have Leopard installed and never noticed anything unusual or had any problems with Bluetooth.

Do you mean problems when the dongle is plugged into a router or something? never had it fail on Tiger or Leopard otherwise.

so music production is light weight? I use it for music production and do not have any problems......

Have you ever seen any OS or major software product released that didn't have some bugs? Software is created by humans and humans aren't perfect. Overall, the system works quite well, and Apple is responding fairly quickly to issues.

As for Vista, it costs a lot more than $129 and if you don't like it you can go back to XP or wait another 5 years for Vista 2 or whatever they call their next monstrosity

software is one thing,an entire hugely popular operating system is another and requires exceedingly stricter [or it should] standards and testing, which leopard obviously seems to lack
and yes bugs are inevitable and even expected.but operating system bugs that are released to the masses should not be glaringly noticeable and obvious lack of testing or effort. that is a fact of being a major OS developer
like i said before, the severe bugs that affect mac pros that were just released and are on the shelves right this second is inexcusable
look on the :apple: support site.look at the comments about the mac pro and hi-end ATI radeon x1900 card which is the most popular pro configuration.there are thousands of posts not even counting the ones that apple is trying so hard to delete as fast as possible.then take a look at the examples people have posted of screenshots
then tell me if a mighty bug like that should have ever made it into a shipping operating system, and even if it did,why it isnt even in 10.5.1??
thats only 1 bug, there are many many other major ones that are still unfixed

Seems that the lack of an Internet Connection is just a very small number of people then. I'll be contacting Support tomorrow.

My Internet connection on the mac was just fine before I updated.

Now it's ballsed up.

Anyone?

no new stack Icons... but you can use this. It's a very good idea. It gives you what looks like bins for your stacks i.e. application bin or download bin but still shows you what's inside that bin.

http://t.ecksdee.org/post/19001860

Just download the icons and move them into the specific stack. They've been modified using the touch command to always be on top.

Enjoy,

HHM

I recently switched back to Tiger. I don't feel like reinstalling until I know Leopard is stable enough to use. Get to work beta testers. :p
