This got to be the worst day of my life!!!
The update has ruined my iPhone!! After installing, my iPhone got stuck in logo mode, and I tried to re-update through my Mac, and it still doesn't work. It says I need to factory reset, meaning I'll loose everything!!! I can't believe this is coming from Apple!!!! 2 years of pictures lost. I'm freaking heartbroken about this. **** ios16
To be honest you should have backed up those photos either to iCloud or some third party backup service since things can go wrong with software updates. I even have a refurbished Windows 10 desktop in case I need to do a DFU restore on any of my Apple products in case of a failed update.

You don’t backup your phone!?

Apple will never learn. Their pre-order process is a disaster and the release of every new iOS is disgraceful. What amazes me is that people know it but they keep getting on the same trap. I never update my iOS on my current phone to a new release within the first couple of das (only security updates) as I know I will come here and read all about those who tried and got their phone bricked.

Oof. So sorry to hear that. As one who has experienced data loss (back in the day on a Mac), I feel for you.
I'm assuming you didn't have any sort of backups, be it iCloud or other?

That's exactly what I was pondering. Whether the migration process would be riskier with the preceding OS. Or not. I'd rather not take the time to update 'wallet' info and so on on my iPhone 13 PM and then go through it all again later this week.

It really should make no difference. If you upgrade and take a new backup, you have an old and new one to pick from, when you get your new phone. Then you are home safe. That's how I like it. But you don't need to, Apple are really good at migration.

Post iOS 16 install get an error when trying to accept new App Store terms and conditions. Which means unable to update apps in the app store. :(

If you have iCloud Backups active your photos are save. I can’t believe you had not make a single backup in those 2 years?

My procedure:
  • Volume Up button quickly
  • Volume Down button quickly
  • Hold Power button until Apple logo disappears for seconds
  • Connect to my computer
  • Select Update (not Reset) on Finder
Glad my iPhone XR is finally updated to iOS 16.0 successfully.

The instructions are there if you scroll down. Beware that DFU mode only gives you the option to restore, so you phone will be wiped. I would use this as a last resort and try recovery mode first to see if that can fix it.

Like I mentioned before, I've had issues with using a USB-C/Lightning cable with recovery/DFU mode. So if you have USB-C on your computer, I'd just use a standard USB-A cable with an adapter.
