Apple Releases iOS 18.2 and iPadOS 18.2 With Genmoji, Image Playground, Siri ChatGPT and More

Y’all can be the guinea pigs. I’m still going to wait until I hear complaints and bugs to see if the ratio is worth the headache
Spoken like a man of significant experience.

I once was a man who got tickled by being first of the first. It brought me many many man-tears. Now what I seek is that my refrigerator refrigerates and that my alarm clock alarms me.
An untested new build, as the official release?

Am I wrong to err on the side of caution with this one?

Could this have been an RC3 if Apple didn’t want to launch AI in Europe?
A confident man waits for lesser men to tread where others show impatience to go. We're not talking D-day and medals of bravery here. Wait a day or two for the crying choir to have done it's part.

(PS I'm watching the new Churchill documentary on Netflix...)

Hope the battery stays the same as RC2, it was absoluty stellar.
I did not install RC's but so far battery life for public 18.2 is horrible on my 16pm, 10% on a desk idle in one hour and still dropping. Have rebooted. No change. Worst battery drain I have ever seen on an iPhone under similar circumstances, hopefully it levels off soon.

Apple today released iOS 18.2 and iPadOS 18.2, the second major updates to the iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 updates that came out in September. The new updates come over a month after Apple released iOS 18.1 and iPadOS 18.1.

The new software can be downloaded on eligible iPhones and iPads over-the-air by going to Settings > General > Software Update.

iOS 18.2 and iPadOS 18.2 introduce new Apple Intelligence features, including the first image generation capabilities. Image Playground is a new app for creating images based on text descriptions, and you can add all kinds of costumes, items, backgrounds and more. You can even make your images look like your friends and family members.

Genmoji is similar to Image Playground, but it's for creating custom emoji characters that you can use in Messages. The third image generation feature is Image Wand, which is Image Playground but in the Notes app. You can make a rough sketch and use Apple Intelligence to make it better. The update includes ChatGPT integration for Siri, so Siri can hand complicated requests over to OpenAI's ChatGPT. For iPhone 16 users, the update adds Visual Intelligence to the Camera Control feature, so you can get more information on items and locations around you.

There are also new features for Photos, Safari, Mail, and more, with Apple's full release notes available below.

We have a range of guides on the new Apple Intelligence features, which might be helpful if you're new to the update and wondering what you can do with Apple Intelligence... Click here to read rest of article

I noticed a very weird bug where if you zoom in sort of try to fill the full screen on a YouTube video I was watching on maximum quality 2160p on my iPhone 14 Pro Max and when I tried to zoom in the phone went black for a second and a loading circle showed up and every app refreshed from start this is very weird, I’ve had this thing happen since iOS 18 but it would happen once a week at least randomly but now it happened twice in under 5 minutes very weird…

Can anyone confirm if date or caption searches work in Photos with iOS 18.2? I know it was removed in iOS 18 and I've been holding off as I heavily reply upon these type of searches. I've used Photos for 15+ years and adding captions to images etc. I was not happy to find out this functionality was removed with iOS 18. I routinely search 12.11 in Photos to find all images from Dec 11th (as an example) and I'm hoping Apple adds this functionality back. Thanks in advance!
I don’t use captions, but date-searching seems to be working.

Is reindexing after updates actually a thing, or just a myth?

The Darwin kernel kept being updated from beta 4 to RC to RC2 to public. So low-level/security patching, or zero event impacting a smooth rollout.

Experiencing lots of funky stuff with apps freaking out. Query error messages when trying to post to FB and the Claude app displaying lots of code. I’ve got an M4 iPad Pro and an iPhone 15 pro max. I’d hold off until 18.2.1

The ChatGPT integration is – after a few minutes of testing – awkward, inconsistent, and half baked. Try it yourself, of course, but this is very much a Beta (as is clearly stated).

Keep your hopes low. The new and improved Siri this is not.
Hopefully, this will be better integrated in iOS 18.3, which is coming probably early February 2025.

Surely there will be 18.2.1 before the holiday break, haha. Especially given their recent track record of updates breaking something.

Just updated on iPhone 16 Pro and the Mail app failed to open every time. Just flashes and quits. Tried reboot and didn’t resolve. Anyone seeing this issue?

Edit: Issue partly resolved. It turned out to be some incompatibility with a mail service that uses Microsoft Exchange server. Turned the mail account off and the app bounced back without problem. So the question is, is this an Apple side bug or mail service’s side bug? Annoying!

Maybe a dumb question, but is there a way to turn on Apple Intelligence fully without having to turn on "Hey Siri"? I've never used it, I have no use in using it, I don't ever want to ask Siri anything using my voice and I don't want it eavesdropping, waiting for me to say Hey Siri. But apparently I can't turn on all of the features without enabling it? if so, well then I don't care, I doubt I'll ever use any of it's features anyway.
I have Apple Intelligence enabled, and I have "Hey Siri" (and the ability to just say "Siri" - ugh) very intentionally turned off (the only device I ever want listening/answering when I say "Hey Siri" is the HomePod at home - I use it to control lights and to add reminders - but this has no bearing on Siri on the phone). I can get to Siri on my iPhone by holding down the side button (you can also turn this on/off), and by using "type to Siri" (double-tap on the very bottom of the screen, and this can also be turned on/off in settings).

I don’t use captions, but date-searching seems to be working.

TY. My interest is piqued. I really want to go to iOS 18.x. I know it sounds sad but I just have a HUGE Photos collection and rely upon finding older content, date specific, for social media content for a side hustle. TY very much!!! Tried on my wife's phone and the 12.12 (for Dec 12th) does not work. When I type Dec 12 it does seem to work but I want to be certain is pulling in all photos for that one day. Her library is much smaller than my library so I'll do some more testing tomorrow. TY again.

Amazing saw the broken UI in RC1 and thought that was why RC2 was released. Here we are on the final version and its still broken. Apple has zero QA nowadays.
