I just updated to ios 26.1 and just a heads up messages app is taking up tons of storage for no good reason when I have 0 texts in the app. Not sure why its saying its full when its not.
prob because all your messages are there but not showing. this happened from my migration from my last phone to my iPhone air. I ended up having to start over as new which was fine, but I realized it was taking up the space from the texts but not showing the texts.

I stopped doing beta updates years ago because I rely on my phone too much for work/production now, but I've been desperately waiting for this update to hopefully fix a bunch of little random annoying UI glitches and battery life that beta users have been talking about.

It's my Apple Watch series 9 that has actually had the worst battery life from 26.0, though.
Yes! Little annoying UI glitches! Notes app is weird and sometimes I have to get out of a note and come back into it to get it "stabilized."

Also, the paper clip (or attach) button sometimes fails to display its contextual menu, on the Notes app as well.

Look at the "R" in "REGISTERED."

It is messed up in the upper left-hand corner!

Another weird glitch!

Just updated my iPhone 17 Pro Max the update was 11.79GB for me. Smooth process, no issues at all.

Would be nice if Apple added a slider to adjust the Liquid Glass opacity instead of just your preferred look.
I think Apple should focus on bug fixing and UI issues first, there is tones of it as users report even with this new update, then UI features later…

Photos and files are not "unnecessary data" to everyone.

"Buy a bigger device" does not help anyone with their current device simply trying to update the software.
It’s not unnecessary data but if you’ve exceeded the amount required for the OS update and you cannot delete any of your files then you should be purchasing a new device with a larger storage capacity or look at cloud based storage options.

Because you're screwed if you have your storage used up with onboard music or photos/files.

Having iOS run up against storage limitations is a NIGHTMARE.

Or messages! Which reminds me - it's 2025, why do I need to store every single text message and photo message that I have ever sent or received on all my devices at all times? Can't that all live in iCloud?

Plus you can't even purge the Messages data from only one device - deleting them from your phone deletes them from your Mac and your iPad in addition to removing them from iCloud.

It's not like Apple is incapable of keeping some stuff local and the rest in the cloud - Photos already does this!

Still getting the air where I have to allow location services for maps and weather and also allow to share do not disturb status every time I open the corresponding apps. What a cluster.

CarPlay will not work unless I approve location services on the map app.

Let's just agree to disagree.

I don't think it's reasonable to always have to keep 10-20 GB free on your device for Apple updates.
I also don't agree that folks need to go buy a device with more storage because of this issue.

Finally, cloud based stuff is a different topic.
People buy onboard storage to use it, not offload everything to the cloud.

I tried to answer you question about why this topic comes up, so there you have it.

Why ask questions if you're just going to argue with people who reply?

Finally get rid of that blasted swipe to open camera.

Good job Apple. 🫡

(I am very curious how long Apple feedback has been requesting this)

Or, to restate this. If you are so close to full that you can't do an update then you are will be completely out of space soon enough update or not.

there's a setting that lets you delete old(er) messages after a certain time period.
The kicker is, every photo you have taken is stored in both the Photo library AND in Messages, plus, you can choose to copy photos you receive to the Photos library.
why do you want to keep 3 year old photos in messages? ever go back in a chat 3 years? I for sure don't ...

So before getting my 17PM I cleaned up ~ 40GB of photos/videos without "losing" any, just duplicates

I've never understood why Messages aren't cloud first and cloud primary.

The amount of mess and discrepancy I have between various machines and devices, with Messages, is hilariously frustrating.

I've just given up on it and have moved various important contact threads to Signal.

I basically just clean sweep my Messages out every few weeks or it becomes a huge junk drawer of out of sync messages, attachments and read status mismatches, often with unread badges that are incorrect also.

Why would the Liquid Glass setting still keep “glass” folders on the home screen if the user selects Tinted? And crucially, how would Apple ship this update without addressing this. The setting should be a stepped slider with at least five steps, if not more, and setting it should affect glass system wide, not only in menus.

An absolutely useless upgrade as it fixed non of my issues on my 17 PM:

1. Security. Attached Devices stuck on Always Allow indicating that my device is managed which it is not.
2. Location services is erratic and does not always locate people who are sharing their location. Completely unreliable.
3. If you have 3 or more voice mails you cannot select number 2 in the list.
4. Phone performance is sticky with animations pausing mid operation for a fraction of a second. Again erratic with it being OK sometimes and not other times.
5. Very poor performance on web page refreshes which are erratic, sometimes fast, sometimes slow and stutter. In fact it is now worse. Cached pages are fine, sounds like a wifi issue.
6. Poor/erratic touch response in all corners.
7. BT connections dropped without warning and need to be re-paired. Not for all devices, only some of them.

I am about to go to Apple and ask them for a new phone, since it is either software or a defective phone. I am very disappointed with this new OS/Phone combination.

It would be okay as an option, but I like having my texts locally. I’m having kind of the opposite problem actually, the photos in my text message threads aren’t showing up. I’ve had my Air for over a month, I would have thought everything would be synced by now

I would definitely go to an Apple store for these. Assuming these are highly repeatable they should definitely respond in some positive way.
