Because otherwise you have:

iOS 4.2 Golden Master
iOS 4.2 Golden Master2-Final-version-promise.

Once you've named a build of a particular version the 'golden master', you can't really reuse the same term for another build of the same version!

Except that they had no problem with this last week with the revised update. Some will argue that that's because they just added a 'b' to the build, but seriously what's the difference.

Apple comply with ISO standards, once they released a GM, they cannot release another build as the same GM, they need to Rev the number.

Oh ... so they HAVE to.

I'm convinced that no one on here actually likes apple or their products. Seriously. Chill the hell out. Get laid. SOMETHING! You guys are stressing me out. (not talking to the satirical posts) Why does it matter if it's not released today? Your iOS4.2 masturbation will have to wait a little bit longer. But you know you're just gonna complain about it when it's out anyway. No matter what. Because that's what MacRumors members do.

I was wondering why they went form 4.2 to 4.2.1

I doubt they will release 4.2 so the only other thing I can think of is that they found a bug in a 4.2 API that they have updated in 4.2.1 (thus forcing app developers to resubmit their apps so that if they use the buggy API they have to change).

So in this release what API changed? (I don't have a developers account).

After posting this I saw the earlier post about the VOIP API bug. So I guess I was right.. and the reason they updated was to fix an API.

YAY!!! We are getting closer and closer to the real thing day by day!!!

And, it's still November!!! YAY!!!

You're right! Microsoft would just release it with the known bugs. :)

Whoa whoa whoa. You're giving Microsoft too much credit. They don't even check to find out if it has bugs. For all we know Microsoft has a guy writing bugs. Probably has the same guy writing the bug patches.

I'm getting sick of this waiting! If I can't put Angry Birds HD and Angry Birds Halloween HD in a folder named "Angry Birds Games" by this evening I'm going to flip the hell out!!!

You make me sad for humanity. We have all this amazing technology, we can do such incredible things. I mean you have a tablet computing device that is more powerful than the computer used to launch humans into space. You can communicate with everyone instantly and play mindless games while on the toilet at a gas station in the middle of nowhere.

We have all this, and yet you still aren't happy. You get frustrated over such a pointless thing like being able to put your virtual crap into folders so you can feel better about using this amazing piece of technology.

You are spoiled and you don't realize how awesome it is to have what you have. You need to chill out and just enjoy it. When 4.2 hits it will be even more enjoyable, but not having it doesn't make it any less incredible.

I'm pretty sure they were joking lol

Exactly! Good things come to those who wait. :p

Similar to if SJ had said you could fit a million songs on an iPod -- if each were all a fraction of a second. Technically true, but misleading.

I don't see how releasing iOS 4.2 on November the 30th would be any more "misleading" than releasing it on November the 2nd when their website states "Coming in November" ..

?!?!

Gold Master X2?

So would you call this a re-master? I thought once you called a rev. "GM" that meant it was out the door bugs or not.

That shows that you don't really have a clue about how Microsoft works. Microsoft's beta program is much more open than Apple's. There is the Microsoft Connect website, where people eligible for the various betas that Microsoft have, can post their impressions and issues with the software. Microsoft also has many surveys for beta testers and offers many ways to submit feedback. Yes, sometimes they release products with known bugs, but who doesn't?

Internally Microsoft uses a very good bug tracking system that is linked to their Technet Knowledge base. This system has interfaces to Microsoft Support Services, the internal beta testing and Microsoft Connect.

Compare that with Apple's betas!

Apple has a closed beta testing system. That is fine, but it sometimes causes issues that would have been caught if Apple were a bit more open.

1) What is misleading about November? Apple did not give a specific date or even a window like "Mid November." Apple said November, which by any interpretation is sometime between November 1 and November 30. It's not rocket science and, moreover, there is plenty of precedence that when Apple gives a broad release month it means the end of the month.

2) When Apple states something holds x amount they always footnote what that is based on, i.e., avg. 3min song at 256mbps. They don't just reach to the sky and pick a number. They base it on typical consumer usage. If you want to load up lossless tunes you are on your own, but that would be a misleading statement. So your comparison really is off in both instances.

4.2.1.1???

I noticed that in both 4.2 GM builds that the screen hangs significantly coming out of the origami slide show mode. Can anyone confirm this in 4.2.1?

Maybe we will need a GM 4th build. Hehehe.

Apology to HarryKeogh

I think we all owe HarryKeogh an apology.

Once 'Angry Birds Christmas' comes out we will all be banging down the doors to SJ's office with pitch forks and torches (and recently cleaned shotguns) if we don't have the 'Angry Birds Games' folders on our iOS devices. ;)

So much downloading and installing, downloading and installing.

Why must I fail at every attempt at masonry? :(

negative, if i mayor bug is found (as it happen here) GM don't become final releases. Them the version need to be bump and a new GM need to be release (if the company comply with ISO)
