Apple Releases iOS 4.2.1 Golden Master to Developers

Next version after Halloween HD. "Angry Macrumors Forum Users" -- catapult them at different sections of Apple campus and see if they can knock out the software engineers inside and retrieve the iOS 4.2.x update!

What is this, a dumb joke? Almost everything they announce is available right then, as opposed to the "sometime in 2011" you hear from almost every competitor, and in this case, they didn't announce anything at all. Don't confuse forum trolling with being present at a keynote. Perhaps you would prefer if they released it unfinished so that you can continue to obsess over Macrumors to see when the NEXT update will be?
 
screw apple for supporting their devices with updates and promising us November and it's already the 18th and still no update. what is up with that? seriously and it's gonna be called 4.2.1 instead of 4.2? i want 4.2 and what's with them saying something is a golden master then changing it? maybe they should've called it the silver master or something. and how dare they keep fixing bugs. i want my ipad to crash darn it. /end sarcasm
 
4.2 was due in November. Not 4.2.1. Clever Marketing trick by Apple PR? Or me just being skeptical?

No, a gold master in phone terms is the one that goes to mobile networks for final network testing to ensure it doesn't kill the rest of the phone network.

The idea is to check it doesn't have showstopping bugs.

Which it obviously did. So it's a bloody good job it's being held back until it's fixed.

Over thinking it. Either way 4.2 was promised in Nov. If some version of 4.2 isn't released it's late.

Not sure if you are being sarcastic or not. If not, there have been times when Apple has released .1 updates on or soon after launch day. Slightly different, but, in effect, not really.

Apple will have to release 4.2 soon. The fact that they are already testing 4.2.1 just means that they will have to release a patch in December but 4.2 has to be released first.
 
Downloading it now. I don't expect much will change for my Apps - but I'm going to retest anyway just to be sure.

I've not read through the release notes (and couldn't comment on them anyway...) but I'm betting this is just a bug sweep to clear up any issues in the earlier GM.
 
4.2.1gm

There is no longer 4.2GM avaliable only 4.2.1 GM left - so there will not be 4.2, instead 4.2.1 will be released to public. Thats my bet.

I am pretty relaxed already. I just think it's hilarious how people can get so upset over something so minor. We live in an amazing time, and people take it for granted. There is so much to enjoy, no reason to care about when 4.2 is released when we already have something that is amazing.

Who says they can't release 4.2.1 before November is up? Plus they could always delay it, there is no contract that Apple has signed. They didn't even promise anything, just said that it will be ready in November.
 
I think a better update to be watching, and a better indication of when our iDevices can be updated officially to 4.2, will be when the Apple TV is updated. Surely it has to be updated first, for AirPlay.

Yup.

iPad 3G was promised in April - and showed up 4/30/10 at 5:00PM, just seven hours to go.

We've got almost a half-month to go and some nutcases are screaming "It's late!"
