Apple Releases iOS 4.2 Golden Master to Developers

1st gen iPhone and iPod touch will still be on 3.1.3.
HP ePrint printers work without any Mac/PC on the network. If you have a printer connected/configured to your Mac/PC then you can use that one also.

AirPrint is designed to support a wide range of printers from entry level inkjet printers to office laser printers. Additionally, iOS 4.2 devices can print to printers shared through a Mac® or a PC. iOS 4.2 compatible HP printers this fall include the HP Photosmart, Officejet, Officejet Pro and LaserJet Pro series ePrint enabled printers.

*AirPrint will work with iPad, iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and iPod touch (third generation and later).

4.2 is just around the corner. And Mac OS X 10.6.5. And iTunes 1.1.

I won't be able to do any of this because I have a first-gen iPod Touch on a PowerPC Mac with iTunes 9. :D
 
AirPrint is going to be a pretty big fail for awhile. Turns out, Apple pulled the "shared" through OS X printers. Maybe the next snow leopard beta isn't ready, but this is a major setback. That means, unless your printer specifically supports it, you cannot print wirelessly.
 
No AirPlay video on iPad yet :(

Still works for me. And it uses iTunes. I have iTunes 10.1 installed on Windows (no macs on school network) and was able to print.
 
Video doesn't transfer for me either. It looks like an AppleTV update may be needed as well. I was looking forward to that.

I also though we can use AirPlay for photos as well. That doesn't seem implemented either.

no no no no no....!!!

ANY networked printer will work (so long as it is connected to a PC or Mac and the iDevice is on the same network via WiFi).

The HP thing is to print directly to the printer without the need for a computer being the middle-man.

With the GM 4.2 on iPad, Wired magazine runs fine with no lag, however Fortune is painfully slow rendering pages. Disappointing.

Then I would imagine that they'll hold off on releasing 4.2 until they can release 10.6.5, and then re-enable printing through OS X-connected printers.

What if you have a USB printer hooked up to an AirPort Extreme, AirPort Express, or Time Capsule? Can you print from an iOS device to a printer connected to any of these devices?

Pretty sure AirPlay for video and photos is not going to be in the 4.2 release, audio only for now. If you listened to Steve Jobs carefully on the conference call 2 weeks ago, he said AirPlay video before the end of the year.

This makes sense since we haven't seen AirPlay video in any of the 4.2 betas. Sorry to disappoint.
 
Glad I scanned though this post before installing the GM. I'm going to skip it now knowing that Airplay to AppleTV and printing via Mac are no-go right now. Those are the only incentives I have to update so I'll wait for the official launch to see if the AppleTV update & 10.6.5 ship with it.
 
Anyone have any idea what this update brings to iPhone 3g? Yes, I'm still using this relic. With a baby on the way, I'm holding on to my money as tight as possible, but i'm hoping 4.2 will bring some goodies to the 3g. Any input?

Only if it is being shared through a Mac or PC. Bummer, I know =(
