Pretty sure AirPlay for video and photos is not going to be in the 4.2 release, audio only for now. If you listened to Steve Jobs carefully on the conference call 2 weeks ago, he said AirPlay video before the end of the year.

This makes sense since we haven't seen AirPlay video in any of the 4.2 betas. Sorry to disappoint.

Stop spreading FUD. AirPlay video is included in 4.2. It's just the Apple TV is currrently running iOS 4.1 which only supports audio and there are no other AirPlay video devices on the market.

I don't know, i have never used the orientation switch on my ipad. what exactly do you use it for? on the other hand, there are tons of times when I wish i had a mute switch!

There is a mute switch it's called hold volume down for half a second

all I want is better battery life

As an iPod touch owner all I really want is for the wifi to shutdown (auto airplane mode) when the device goes into standby. My battery life is terrible (approx 24 hours in standby) if the airplane mode is turned off. If it is turned on and off every time I use the device the battery life is very good.

For those who have been on the iPod touch battery threads - yes I have tried unloading all of the apps before putting into standby. The only thing that works is Airplane mode. So all I want is someway to do the equivalent of an auto airplane mode.

Well it is supposed to stay connected to the network looking for email and push notifications.

No, that makes no sense on an iDevice. WiFi persistence is a key feature to get things like push notifications, e-mail alerts, SMS messages etc, while the device is in sleep mode. That's not going to change.

iPod and Videos both say "Syncing" and "canceling Sync" after updating and none of my media appears to be there anymore. Hmm...

I wonder what the chances are this will be released before Thanksgiving. Traditionally, when Apple says "November" they mean November 29 or December 4 or so.

4.2 is sweet...

Whole OS feels snappier all around.

Loving multitasking and unified inbox (was missing it since I've had it on my iPhone forever it seems).

Also, for me, having the mute switch back rocks.

No problems with any of my apps so far. Netflix plays videos w/o any issues.

To install this, do you just click on the download 4.2 or do you have to do anything special?

Usually within 2 weeks. It took exactly 1 week for 4.1 to go from GM to public.

UPDATE: Just looked it up, 4.1 GM came out on the 1st and the public release came out on the 8th.

I'd say that they're probably pretty good considering that the GM is the final build before release and also that typically the transition between GM and release with Apple is a week. So if I had to guess it'll be released the 9th.

Isn't winter just around the corner for Northerners and Summer for southerners? And didn't he say the update would be just in time for summer (i.e. December)? Really, I can't understand why this isn't obvious.

Autumn just started barely a month ago. Therefore, winter is nearly two months off, so we're still closer to summer than winter. Autumn will be half over in about a week or two.

I've installed iOS's from downloads before, but i think i'm doing something wrong? Got the GM build, 4.2 trying to install on ipad, doesn't seem to be doing anything.

Did you register your UUID with Apple? I think you will still need this even with a GM image.

So you go through the restore steps and it gives you a choice to load 4.2?

In iTunes, (on OSX) you click the restore button while holding the Alt key. This will bring up a finder window so you can point to the 4.2 file (otherwise iTunes thinks you already have the latest OS (and rightly so since this is still considered a beta release).

This process restores you to the OS that you select, which takes around seven or eight minutes. After this is done, you're upgraded, and ready to restore your settings from backup.
