I don't know, i have never used the orientation switch on my ipad. what exactly do you use it for? on the other hand, there are tons of times when I wish i had a mute switch!

I know I'm an edge case, but I use it all the time. I have Tourette's, and if I'm holding the iPad, any little motor tic can cause it to turn a bit and change orientation. So whether it's in portrait or landscape, I want it to stay that way.

That said, I don't care if the lock is a physical switch or a few swipes away, as long as it's there.

In iTunes, (on OSX) you click the restore button while holding the Alt key. This will bring up a finder window so you can point to the 4.2 file (otherwise iTunes thinks you already have the latest OS (and rightly do since this is still considered a beta release).

This process restores you to the OS that you select, which takes around seven or eight minutes. After this is done, you're upgraded, and ready to restore your settings from backup.

Neurobit.

You could do the same exact thing except instead of clicking on "Restore" you click on "Check for Update"

Not with betas you don't. There's nothing to update. You have to restore, which is pretty much the same thing but with a slightly different procedure.

It updates the OS, it preserves all your data and it takes less time. I do it with Betas all the time.

Once again:

1. Does GM require Dev account registration?
2. Does GM require iTunes 10.1 or iTunes 10.0.1?
3. If I don't have iTunes 10.1, will it not let me install iOS 4.2?

Thanks.

1. No
2. 10.1
3. You cannot install iOS 4.2 without iTunes 10.1.

I'm not a developer and just about through with the process, it's currently reinstalling all of my apps.

I hope there will be a way to enable AirPrint on iPod touches via jailbreaking... I would love print my to do lists :)

Autumn just started barely a month ago. Therefore, winter is nearly two months off, so we're still closer to summer than winter. Autumn will be half over in about a week or two.

No, the winter solstice (first day of winter) in northern hemisphere is dec 21 or 22.

btw, somebody check: didn't the guy who first used that expression have a UK home address in his profile? So he was just hyperexcited and got his seasons confused, i think.

You actually don't need 10.1 to update. You can use 10.0.1. However, you will not be able to backup your system to iTunes with 10.0.1.

Well this is not entirely true. I just updated the iPad to 4.2 using the option click on check for update method (on the mac) in iTunes 10.0.1. The software updated just fine.

However, once the update was completed, iTunes prompted me to download version 10.1, stating that the iPad was unusable until I did. It seems that by unusable, they mean the iPad will not be recognized by lower versions of iTunes as it was no longer showing up in my iTunes sidebar despite being plugged in via USB.

But make no mistakes, it updated the iPad just fine as I described above.

maybe I am an idiot.... well i am definitely an idiot but when is it useful? I don't understand

(In the spirit of Jon Stewart, I'm ignoring all the nonsense about you being an idiot.)

It is really useful in bed. Somewhere I read 20% of ipad use was in bed. About 90% of my ipad use is in bed. And I really like the orientation lock. But I'd like it even better as a soft key or something. When you've turned the ipad over 6 times, it's really hard to figure out in the dark where the damn switch is.

So What's New for iPhone 4??

Anyone have a complete list of new features & tweaks present in 4.2 Gold for the iPhone 4??
