can we use the 10.1 beta 2 on windows to update to 4.2 ok? do you need to be a dev to use that? thanks

I used iTunes 10.1b5 and on my iPad it worked. On my iPhone 4 the update worked but iTunes couldn't bing my iPhone out of recovery mode. I used Tiny Umbrella to do that.

For those who are not developers and are asking whether 10.1 iTunes is required, and any way around not using it....

WHY?

Just download it from the same source you are obviously torrenting the 4.2GM and install it....

Why jump through hoops when the easiest solution is already staring you in the face?

I'm really hoping for an iPad update in a couple of weeks with more memory to run 4.2. Yeah I know the big rev is next year but an A4 from iPhone 4 ought to do us nicely. The only concern really is that multitasking will impact performance as it pressures RAM.

About as likely as hair regrowing on my baldy baldy head.

Besides, 4.2 runs great on the iPad, the only difference between it and my iPhone 4 is that the former flushes out unused apps a little sooner.

Pretty much. :)

I'm also curious that by downloading these GM software releases, does it have any effect on your apps other than multitasking not being supported on iPad apps at this point?

Some apps will need updating to work with iOS 4.2 and won't work at all or won't work very well (Discover and Sky Mobile TV are two I am aware of), but most will work fine

Wtf!?!

Volume on iPhone

I need the "volume control bar" there? Geez like I need another hole in my head. WTF are the buttons on the sides for? Geez a better implementation would have been a widget screen like SBSettings or anything better than a freaking volume control bar.

I know. Sigh. Why replicate this control that's got two dedicated hardware buttons and a separate control in the video/iPod app already? Arrgghh! Why no shortcut to wifi on/off, or Bluetooth, or brightness, or EQ settings (though to be honest, when these things come I hope they're less hidden away than going into the multitask menu and swiping twice. That's nearly as bad as the existing UX).

Apple's dev practices sometimes utterly, utterly baffle me.

You make a lot of sense - have you gone and suggested it to Apple through their feedback site? Let me know when you have and I will too.

Amen to that.

I'd rather swipe and see a WiFi icon, Bluetooth icon, brightness icon (swipe up or down the screen to change) - some proper useful controls so we don't need to dive into the settings.

Also, when vertical, the AirPlay icon overlays the volume icon like it's not spaced properly, looks really bad. EDIT - Now it's not doing this anymore after locking landscape, opening the controls bar, unlocking landscape and switching back to portrait - the buttons are fine now.

iPod Touch will be able to use AirPlay, yes? That paragraph is a little ambiguous and only specifically calls out iPad.

Am I missing something? I can't pull this up on my iPhone 4 running 4.2. Don't see any changes to the MultiTasking bar.

I don't know, i have never used the orientation switch on my ipad. what exactly do you use it for? on the other hand, there are tons of times when I wish i had a mute switch!

So holding down on the volume minus button for a second is just too hard...

i hate the fact that it now has a software rotation lock, I use the hardware key daily!

swipe twice left... first swipe will be ipod controls, second swipt will be volume control...

dont know who is going to use that, as you have the hard button(s) on the side of the phone... unless Apple is going to change the meaning of those, like they've done with the iPad lock orientation!!!

Somehow my installation of this to my iPad wiped out 90% of my apps and installed 4 apps from my iPhone I've never had installed on the iPad.

I connected the iPad, it synced and backed up. Then I did an alt-Restore and used the 4.2 GM file. Then it went through all the gubbins it does, wiped the iPad, restored, verified, asked me if I wanted to install from my last backup (I said yes) and it went ahead. While installing apps I noticed it only installed half a dozen then went on to music. Eventually after 2 hours I cancelled the music sync because I was bored waiting and indeed I had only half a dozen apps on my ipad.

Finally, the only backups now available to me are both from *during* the restore process, meaning that restring from those have the same result.

I can live with reinstalling all the productivity stuff, no biggie. But ALL my games are gone, including all the saves obviously, because Apple STILL refuse to allow save states to sync back and forth from iTunes unless you do an entire restore from backup.

The volume control addition makes NO sense to me. I hate the change to the orientation switch anyway, but what is even worse is they haven't even fixed the over-sensitive hold-to-mute on the volume control, so now the only way to adjust the volume downwards quickly (instead of click-click-click-click-click on the hardware volume control) is to use the software slider, saving no time. Furthermore there are now TWO mute controls assigned to the hardware buttons.

This really doesn't seem like Apple.

Thank god. Printing from iPhone/iPod is key!!!!

It is really? I haven't had a functioning printer in my house in years and work printers aren't set up for this. Besides, you can always forward an attachment to a computer that is attached to a printer to print remotely.
I've never understood where this issue comes from and what people do that requires them to want to be able to print from their mobile device. When I do print, it is because I want the words to come with me in a way that my desktop computer can't. Mobile devices don't have that limitation.

This is the main reason I jailbreak. SBSettings is just so useful.

My guess about the volume controls

The volume control addition makes NO sense to me. I hate the change to the orientation switch anyway, but what is even worse is they haven't even fixed the over-sensitive hold-to-mute on the volume control, so now the only way to adjust the volume downwards quickly (instead of click-click-click-click-click on the hardware volume control) is to use the software slider, saving no time. My guess is that they included the volume control screen to allow for turning off AirPlay without having to hunt for an application with audio controls. For example, a few times I've been playing an album from the iPod app via AirPlay, and then the album would end. Afterwards, the audio (all audio, including the alerts, ringtones, and lock sounds) would still be going through AirPlay instead of my phone's speakers, and I would have to open up the iPod app to disable all the audio going over AirPlay. Now, I can bring up the multitask menu and swipe left twice to get to the AirPlay control.

I agree that it's still not ideal. I didn't even know the volume controls were there until I read this thread. Hopefully they can come up with something better in the a point release or iOS 5.0.

Is there any noticeable speed improvements with the standard sync with iTunes? Obviously, you developers are probably updating and syncing constantly...but if one was to go a few weeks...or a month between syncs? Has it sped up at all or still a lengthy process?

Thanks!
