Does anyone know if VLC or Cineplayer will work with AirPlay? I want to avoid converting all my vidoe files for Apple TV. What does everyone think? Any hope?

I would tend to think not since the Apple TV would not have the proper codecs or whatever to play the file that was being streamed to it. The app would have to do some kind of conversion before it was shipped to the Apple TV.

Is the iOS 4.2 GM really final?

I read that Apple's Gold Master is equivalent to Microsoft's Release Candidate, so, as Microsoft occasionally releases RC2s, is there a chance that there will be Gold Master 2 before the Public Release?

I'm partly asking because, either through an update I did of my iPhone (or maybe it was a restore), the iOS did not remember my folders so I had to reorganize all my apps again into new folders, so I'm wondering whether I may be doing this again if I upgrade now.

Last Q:

Without iTunes 10.1 on my computer, can I still install the GM and still keep all the apps + media on my iPhone?

I don't care about having to back up or sync with iTunes between now and the official release date.

Thanks.

The 4.1 GM was the exact file released to the public. There is still a chance there could be a show stopping bug found but highly unlikely. Also, your folders should be kept through a restore and sync if you've got a backup.

Yes but you need to do an update (alt+"check for updates" button) not a restore.

Cool - my exams will be over around the same time 4.2 should hit general release, and I've got a prize for a film-comp coming hopefully that week too! Shaping up to be a great start to my summer!

I had to look left to your id to see where you live. Summer...awesome.

I'm ready for multi-tasking to hit. I love it on my iPhone 4.

Seems likely, especially considering 10.6.5 is now removed from the iOS developer site, and iOS printing requires it.

10.6.5 was released internally today at Apple, according to 9to5mac. So, it should be here tuesday or wednesday.

I am hoping when the official ios 4.2 is available for the public, Apple also update the apple TV and release os 10.6.5.

After I updated I was prompted with something about my MobileMe settings need to be reset. Now I can't log in at all. It just keeps popping up INVALID_PASSWORD. Anyone else having this issue?

There are some changes that don't appear to be fully setup on the server side at Apple.

maybe I am an idiot.... well i am definitely an idiot but when is it useful? I don't understand

Locking the orientation comes in handy when lying on your back reading (e.g. in bed or whilst being swallowed alive by a giant bean bag:D).

But it is also very handy for fixing the rotation when constantly handing the iPad around - if I am showing a video or documents to multiple people, everytime I pass it to someone the orientation changes, which can get really annoying - especially for those who are technically or co-ordinally inept.

Why does it have to be me????????????????

I get some f#$%&g error every time I try to update the software. Says my iPhone is in recovery mode now. Lost everything. Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What should I do now???????????? Tried updating, restoring, nothing helps. Same f#$%&g error!!!!!! Arrrrrghhhhhhhhh!!!!!!! Why?????????????????:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

Volume on iPhone

I really don't understand why they put the volume slider in the multitasking bar in the iPhone rather than a brightness control when there are already physical volume controls on the device.

The entire OS is indeed more snappy on my iPhone 4.
Can confirm there are a whole bunch more SMS tones. Some good some not so good.

Airplay is rad. Can stream to AirPort Express from any app, though it has a 2 second delay on the audio, which makes it pretty useless for games. Hopefully VLC etc can update to allow for a video delay to keep it all in sync. (This is currently what I do on my MacBook Pro using VLC & AirFoil -> AirPort Express)

Update:
ooh and noticed this option to make the ringer volume unrelated to the volume controls - makes sense.

Downloading iOS 4.2 GM for my iPad and iPhone 4 as we speak.

Only thing that concerns me is this iTunes 10.1 beta 2 that is necessary for install. Hope it doesn't ruin any of my files or settings.

It shouldn't.

...I get the feeling that the non-developers installing 4.2 vastly outnumber the developers, though.

No issues with MobileMe here. Everything but Calender is being pushed. Cloud down to ical on the macbook isn't working as well so I'm not thinking it's a 4.2 issue.

Pretty much. :)

I'm also curious that by downloading these GM software releases, does it have any effect on your apps other than multitasking not being supported on iPad apps at this point?

Generally speaking, all the iPhone apps that support multitasking can already multitask on the iPad. Same goes for a lot of iPad specific apps too, though obviously not all of them.

I've been pretty happy with Beta 3 so I may as well wait till the official release now rather than faff about getting the iTunes beta.
