The old iOS had an evenness of style, texture, and color that was very pleasing. The skeumorphism was cheesy but very intuitive. iOS7 lacks that balance -- colors are either too fluorescent or white, numbers and text letters are not scaled well, and icons in folders are now tiny while the non-foldered icons look huge because of the flatness.

This kind of reminds me of the old iMac vs. the 2012 imacs. The old imacs had a bulkier but balanced build, whereas the new imacs are unnecessarily thin on the sides but have this awkward back pregnant bulge. It's flashy to have an all in one computer that's so thin on the side but if you look at the back it looks awkward.

This reminds me last years Maps fiasco.
However there is a huge difference between a yet immature technology and
a bad taste that is going to make users unhappy.
The only reason I remember it is because I am sure it's going to make the same
bad reputation for Apple, just like the Maps app last year.

Got a dilemma from a friend. Downloaded it, but it reverted to an old apple id and now won't let access to anything because it doesn't recognize the id. Any help?

Revert back to iOS < 7 if you have the SHSH.
You might need an older version of iTunes to do that.

like it

Took the plunge and updated my iPad4. Going to wait to update iPhone 5. So far, I like it. No problems at all. Feels snappy and I like the UI design. Haven't noticed any lag, but I turned off background app updates and did a hard restart after the update based on recommendations in this thread.

Had trouble seeing the icons, but after I picked a decent background image, ie. one of my sand dune images, it all looks nice to me. Not an Apple "fanboy" but I have to say... I'm liking the changes so far.

I really wanted to like iOS 7. Even after reading numerous complaints that the
sneak previews looked like an Android knockoff. After experiencing iOS 7 for
myself, I can sincerely say that Jon Ive should be fired! iOS 7 looks like a
bastardized version of Android for kindergarten kids! Many of the icons look
like they were drawn by my four year old! In particular the button icons. The
bookmarks icon is a square with a line through it. Really? Most of the
applications look "anemic", featuring boring childish icons with a washed out
white background.

I used to LOVE the 3D look and feel of the previous versions of iOS. I can't
believe Apple released iOS 7 thinking that consumers would actually embrace it.
Apple is loosing it. They are out of touch with what consumers want. iOS 7
represents one of the worst cases of "ive tower syndrome" I have ever seen!

AND THERE IS STILL NO MISSED PHONE CALL ALERT!!!!!!!!

My first thoughts on iPad 4

Just thought I would share my experience in the first couple minutes. I feel like iOS 7 just feels more crisp and I like that. Folders not so much, I think the move from showing 4x4 apps in folders to only showing 3x3 is ridiculous. The added ability to swipe in folders is nice so you can add more to a folder but show less... They need to bring back the 4x4 list. Search is buggy, when I swipe down to expose the search there is a good 3-4 seconds where I can't do anything (maybe it's still indexing or something and that will go away after a while, I hope). Everything else seems snappy so far. I also am not a huge fan of the look of folders or the dock but I really liked the look of the dock before. So far mixed feelings. But I am enjoying the newness of it.

Also, Control center just stopped working for me. I am going to try a reboot but turning the settings off and on again and locking/opening again didn't work.
- Reboot fixed that.

I am finding that the keyboard is incredibly unresponsive in all cases taking seconds to respond to text input and then dumping it all at once just to make you wait again and it repeats this cycle. The keyboard is essentially non-functional and is my greatest disappointment so far. I have to deal with that now until an update comes along...
- Resetting all settings seems to have fixed the keyboard, hopefully it stays that way.

Since the update at noon, my iPhone 4S has been rendered useless because it is extremely slow. Tried to restore to factory setting, but all I am getting is "Contacting the iPhone software update server" over the past 2+ hours.

I couldn't disagree more. iOS 7 is fantastic, I love the simplicity of the design, look & feel of it, and the improvements are dramatic!

I have been trying to download iOS7 for much of the day on the East coast (U.S.), and have not had any luck. ......My current wait time is just about 130 hours using iTunes. Wait, scratch that, I just been kicked out again. Oh well, I was really looking forward to this today, but I guess I will have to wait until next week.

Dude, save yourself any additional frustration and time. Use your PC or Mac and download the file(s) directly from Apple you want for the update from here (the speed is fantastic - I did a 4s and iPad 3 image in less than 20 minutes) - be sure and grab the right images for your particular iThings:

http://www.redmondpie.com/download-ios-7-final-ipsw-for-iphone-5-4s-4-ipad-and-ipod-touch-direct-links/

Then follow the very small steps on this page to make sure your iTunes uses the file you just downloaded to image your iThing with (5-7 minutes):

http://news.softpedia.com/news/Download-iPhone-iPod-IPSW-Manually-Restore-via-iTunes-How-to-136037.shtml

After 15-20 minutes of effort you'll be up in iOS 7. Activation worked better for me through iTunes as an FYI (one of the last steps - the activation servers have been getting hammered all day).

Wow super insightful and oh so much help. WOW!!! Can't believe I didn't think of that. Help is what is needed, not your jokes.

Seriously - who in their right mind would get a software update from "a friend" or "this other download site" rather than downloading a signed copy from the source?

That's about as smart as registering on http://www.malwaredownloads.com for their hourly automatic updates.

You made a bad choice, and now it's bitten you.
______

And to be helpful - wipe the device absolutely clean and do a virgin installation. Don't try to save anything - any saved apps/files might carry the infections to the new system.

Jony Ive never did art in school..

The icons look like they've been designed by a 5 year old!!

The overall feel is so childish. Gradient of colors used. Everything so simple n kept transparent. Jony simply lacks creativity. He can't design. He sucks at it.

Bring back Scott forstall.

Troll much?

Mr. Ive did study Industrial Design which is part of creativity. Here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jonathan_Ive

Product design IS Industrial Design. Remember that. Plus, just because he was placed in the UI design oversight doesn't mean he may have been the right guy for it. He's an experienced professional designer who has certain specialized skills, but UI isn't one of them as he's had to probably learn this 'on the go' or be brought up to speed.

UX/UI design is different than Industrial Design in terms of discipline and thought. It doesn't mean he can't draw when he most certainly CAN.

Safari rotating tabs display

Does anyone know how to get this to work on the iPad?

My iPhone has that two-squares icon for the tabs view, but not my iPad!

The whole thing, especially animations, is a bit jittery on my iPod Touch 5th gen. Already had Safari crash once as well, and that never happened on iOS 6. Time will tell, but my initial reaction is meh . . . Definitely didn't wow me at first.

Seems I spoke too soon. After I completely turned off my iPod and turned it back on, everything is smooth and no crashing. The new gestures take some getting used to, but pleased so far. Also, as others have mentioned, the aesthetic grows on you.

You are taking my opinions way too personally. First of all, those clothes do look feminine. Second, nothing I wrote was rude or culturally insensitive. That is your spin on it. These are my opinions and they are well informed. If you choose to see me as a sexist, or a homophobe just because I don't think men are going to like the pastel color scheme then you are probably just as close minded and bigoted as you would make me out to be. You have judged me as a horrible bigoted person from my one opinion without even understanding it. Anyway, good day to you.

Also, FYI, expressing your opinion is not whining.

If you don't get it by now.....
As the expression aptly goes.
Here's a last valiant try to overcome YEARS of ignorant/bigoted thinking though:
What makes an article of clothing masculine or feminine is the cut, NOT the color.. This is 2013, NOT 1953. Men wear pink or purple shirts. *gasp* Even businessmen.. even industrialists, all kinds of REAL men.
When I say that I like Apple's new OS & the colors are pleasing to me.. and you say that they are feminine & "real men" won't like them. That is MOST CERTAINLY rude & insensitive!!! You are quite blatantly saying I'm not a "real man" & my tastes are feminine. The fact that you don't even see it is seriously sad (bordering pathetic). When I was taking a corporate cultural sensitivity training class while working at the University, we had one old codger like you who just couldn't quite wrap his old-fashioned mind around the fact that his "harmless" comments, that he had grown up saying.... bearing nobody any ill will, were indeed racist or at least culturally insensitive. Lol, I remember them taking SO long to break him of referring to people by their race in conversations.. as in: "you know, that Mexican guy that works up front.." to people of his generation, that just seemed normal. It made sense, after all.. there was only a single "Mexican" that worked up front. I remember when nothing else would stick, a trainer described how a description sans race references could show that you pay attention & value another human being, as in: "you know that guy that works downstairs.. the one that loves his family, and has all the soccer pictures of his kid on his desk?". It SUDDENLY clicked for him. I am unsure what it would take to "click" for you, for you to realize that nowadays, the things you say and how you say them ARE rude & insensitive (whether you meant for them to be or not). I hope this helps you, as it is not I that has painted you as close minded or bigoted... it is your own words that have sadly done that, sir.
Respectfully hoping that you can join us in this kinder, gentler era... It is NEVER too late to change!!

Apple has just released iOS 7 to the public, making the download available to users of recent iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch models. Users can obtain the update either by connecting their devices to iTunes and clicking the "Check for Update" button or checking for over-the-air updates on their devices via Settings -> General -> Software Update. It may, however, take a few minutes for the update to propagate to all users.

Our iOS 7 roundup has a good primer for users wanting to know what's new in iOS 7, and Apple also has several marketing pages showcasing the new design and new features in the operating system.

YouTube: video
iOS 7 adds more than 200 new features, the biggest being a top-to-bottom redesign of the user interface. Other new features include Control Center, a panel that slides up from the bottom of any screen that allows settings like Bluetooth and AirPort to be toggled on and off, a number of new camera features, a new multitasking screen, AirDrop, iTunes Radio and more.
iOS 7 is compatible with the iPhone 4 and later, iPad 2 and later, iPad mini, and fifth-generation iPod touch. It will also ship on the iPhone 5c and 5s, which will be available for sale on Friday. The release arrives as golden master build 11A470a.

Update: Apple also released iOS 7.0.1 just for the iPhone 5c and 5s to fix a few bugs ahead of their public launch on Friday. That version has a build number of 11A466.

Update 2: Many readers are reporting issues with the over-the-air iOS update mechanism, suggesting Apple's servers may be overwhelmed with traffic.

Update 3: Apple has also released the final version of Xcode 5.0.

The colors of the new OS7 reminds me of something that Fisher Price would sale. :)
