Don't be Apple apologists

Everyone here who loves Apple needs to confront the truth that the iPhone 6 Plus is getting bent in NORMAL, non-abusive, FRONT POCKET usage by people who have been carrying other smartphones, including older iPhones, every day for years without bending them. Failing to confront and acknowledge this truth will just help Apple ignore the issue and fail to learn a lesson from it and make future iterations of the iPhone more capable of handling real world intended usage.

Don't be victim blamers and Apple apologists. Don't vote up comments that imply the bending only happens to idiots who sit on their phones in their BACK pockets, because this ISN'T REALITY. Most people do not sit on their expensive smartphones like they might have done with their old Nokia bombproof dumbphones, and this is NOT how the iPhones are getting bent.

If you like Apple's products, do yourselves, Apple, and all the rest of us a huge favor and help Apple acknowledge their failure on the bending issue so they can make an even better iPhone next year that doesn't require an Otter Box hard case to survive normal daily FRONT POCKET usage. Or do you not actually want to have a better iPhone in the future?

Thanks to the person that posted the IPSW for 8.0. I'm up and running.

Apple Tech Support had no answer other than go to the store and be given a new phone. To be fair, the tech assumed I had already tried restoring.

OMG wonder how many replaced iP6/6+ there will be over the next few days due to Apple Support saying that to folks rather than telling them how to restore back to 8? I guess the backorder will push out 3 more months now.

Guys, please somebody tell me how to restore my iCloud backup after downgrading to 8.0??? It doesn't want to apply it when I restore my phone and all my settings, contacts and messages, apps are gone.

Strange. I downgraded as well and everything is fine.

Did you click on "update" and hold (Option for Mac) or (Shift for PC) then select the ipsw?

There are unsupported ways to do it. It involves editing the info.plist file in your backup folder. \Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup (windows).
Google it for clarity but the Product Version section. in 7.0 you could change it to the version you are restoring to and it worked.

Disclaimer: this was a solution in 7.0 days so can only assume it will work for 8. **I can not verify 100% myself so at your own risk**Guess no harm to try if you are going to have to start fresh anyway would be my thought. Worst case you restore again and have no backup.

<key>Product Version</key>
<string>8.0</string>

But why even the older backups are having this issue ?

An Apple retail store would have downgraded it to IOS 8.

"No service" ......

You were the first one on MR to post about the big problem. :)

It's actually amusing to read this thread in retrospect; everyone seems so hopeful and happy about the update, then it rapidly degrades into panic and disappointment.

It's absolutely beautiful.

Off topic for this thread but would you expect your iPad mini to bend if you carried it in your pocket? How about your laptop/netbook? The iP6 plus is a big device to stuff into a pocket. Holding a company responsible for bending a device due to how you carried it is beyond nuts. Pretty sure there is nothing published that states "You can also carry this HUGE device in your pocket just like you did your razor flip phone!"

There won't be that many.

Only us nerds update right away; most regular people only update when the notification appears, which tends to be 12-24 hours after the update is available.

Us nerds also tend to know how to restore the phone to iOS 8.0 after the broken update. This won't be a huge problem for Apple, besides the (deserved!) bad PR.

I don't really agree with you on this. But in the case of the 6+, I wouldn't think that huge thing would even fit in a pocket ;)

Completely agree.

Not defending Apple as this was a HUGE fail, but........"expecting a very important call in the next half hour" and you decided to do an OS update just before it? Not a good plan on your part. Just sayin.

I'll say the same thing to you as I said to the other Apple apologist troll. I didn't update a half hour before my call, I updated at noon (my time), posted here at 12:30, expecting call at 1:00pm. That's one hour. Typically these small incremental updates take just a few minutes. I didn't realize that expecting my phone to function an hour after hitting the update button was too high of expectations, but perhaps Apple is teaching me otherwise.

Not exactly following you. Or you are not exactly following. Your initial question was
Guys, please somebody tell me how to restore my iCloud backup after downgrading to 8.0??? It doesn't want to apply it when I restore my phone and all my settings, contacts and messages, apps are gone.
iOS 8.0.1 created some problems. Any backups of your data while on iOS 8.0.1 will not restore to an older version of iOS (so if you go back to iOS8). You can always restore old backups (your data) to new versions of iOS but not the other way around.

Your question was why can you not restore your data you backed up with iOS 8.0.1 back to iOS 8. That is by design because technically according to Apple you cannot go back to a previous version of iOS either so that would not be needed. However as we all know you can, for a period of time go back to a previous iOS version. So to restore a "new" version backup to an "old" version of iOS you have to fool the program into thinking its ok to do so. If you are cool with restoring iOS fresh and just downloading your apps, and forgetting trying to restore your backup that is best option. If you need to restore the backup I have given you some info that may help.

[EDIT] Light bulb!!! I just realized you were stating iCloud backup. My appologies! The aforementioned process is regarding iTunes backup. oops. Not sure what you can do about iCloud.

Backup to your computer and restore your 8.0.1 on your 8.0... Works like a charm on 2 iPhone 6 Plus.

It's a freaking phone. The purpose of mobile phones is for them to be mobile. That has always meant that you can carry them around in your pocket, because that was what happened with every mobile phone in history. Did Apple ever publish a warning that "Oh, sorry folks, but this phone is different than every other phone known to mankind. You can't carry it around in your pocket because it will bend, unlike all the other phones you've ever had."

Having said that, it takes a lot of force to bend this phone. Just look at the videos. The guys doing the bending are putting a LOT of force on the phone. With that kind of force, you're going to get bruises on your leg. Or whatever your pocket happens to cover.

Well again not apologizing for Apple as I stated HUGE FAIL. You can resort to calling me a troll if you wish. I would say more like a realist. But I stand by the fact that if you are that reliant on your phone during the work day for an important call in 30 min as previously stated, an hour later as you now state or later that day, perhaps its better planning to update that evening after your important business is completed. Updating an operating system is a little more involved than updating an app. But certainly you can choose to do it whenever you want, just maybe not a good idea to update your phone before an "important" phone call.

The issue isn't doing it right before an important phone call. It's doing it the same DAY as ANY phone calls. Because most people who did the update don't hang out on macrumors and have no idea what to do to fix it, and apple's own advice on the phone made things worse for some people and apple isn't saying anything publicly. And it's been hours and hours now.
