For people restoring via iTunes back down to 8.0, does this wipe media or apps/content? If so, I'm content to use this giant ipod touch until they release an official fix. I really have no interest in redownloading everything again.

(6+, T-Mobile, no service or touch ID, OTA update, for anyone who's interested.)

You can just do a ALT key update button and select the 8.0 file, it reloads the OS and reboots. No restoring of any data/apps needed.

^WHS. You don't have to force the phone into DFU mode to go from 8.0.1 to 8.0. All you have to do is download the 8.0 IPSW file for your model, then in the settings for your phone in iTunes hold option (or alt) and click "check for update" wait for a finder window and select the 8.0 file. Then your phone will take a few minutes and restore to 8.0 and all your content will still be there.

Guys, please somebody tell me how to restore my iCloud backup after downgrading to 8.0??? It doesn't want to apply it when I restore my phone and all my settings, contacts and messages, apps are gone.

Not much any of us can do. You can check with Apple, but since there's no user visibility into what was backed up onto iCloud there isn't much you can twiddle to somehow make it work.

In this new system, are the icons as dumb as in system 7, or are they more reminiscent to a robust system 6? I see now, it is just as stupid. Now, can I use Skype in this new system8? Or better yet, can I revert from system 7 back to system 6?

You sound like a troll. No Apple user uses the word system. If you are unhappy go buy a Samsung phone.

We obviously have no idea how Apple test updates but if someone had Touch ID setup, how did they test the rest of the OS?

It's the first thing you do when you wake the phone.

Apple's silence on the issue (beyond "we're looking into it") is not good.

What else would you expect them to say? Until they really know what the issue and resolution is, there is nothing else to say. If they communicate theories all that will do is make things more confusing, especially if those theories end up being wrong.

Besides, as consumers all we need to know is when a fix will be available. The cause of the issue and Apple's internal politics is their business.

cell service loss would be noticed first, since on first boot you can't touch id.

Well it was on page 11. So there were 11 pages of "no service and no touch id" messages. Sorry to ruffle you. not my intent.

Do realize, those 11 pages came in minutes, there were 797 comments and 2x pages in the first 20 minutes alone.

By now they surely know what went wrong. They can tell us that.
They can tell us how they will prevent it in the future.
They can tell us a timetable for a solution, or, if the official solution is this "restore to iOS 8" nonsense they can say so publicly.

You yourself say "all we need to know is when a fix will be available." Well, guess what? They haven't said anything. It's been hours, and they must have some idea.

There are unsupported ways to do it. It involves editing the info.plist file in your backup folder. \Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup (windows).
Google it for clarity but the Product Version section. in 7.0 you could change it to the version you are restoring to and it worked.

Disclaimer: this was a solution in 7.0 days so can only assume it will work for 8. **I can not verify 100% myself so at your own risk**Guess no harm to try if you are going to have to start fresh anyway would be my thought. Worst case you restore again and have no backup.

<key>Product Version</key>
<string>8.0</string>

Thanks to the person that posted the IPSW for 8.0. I'm up and running.

Apple Tech Support had no answer other than go to the store and be given a new phone. To be fair, the tech assumed I had already tried restoring.
