8.1.1 unbreaks Safari on iPad2 which was useless with 8.0.2 and 8.1. If you're running 8.x definitely upgrade but if on 7.x you probably want to test side by side before taking the plunge.

One thing that seems broken on 8.1.1 is I can't log into MR maybe because autocorrect is mangling my password and had to login and post with Note II.

Tip for upgrading from 8.1.1 beta since it's a 1.3GB download is use iTunes on computer to upgrade since it's much faster than reading and writing from flash memory which felt like forever in comparison.

Hope so. It also still doesn't show cached music (when you listen to songs) in usage like it used to with 7, it will only show manually downloaded music. It sucks

Yeah, it's kinda irritating. The only way to purge the cached songs is to toggle iTunes Match on and off. Also, those songs will supposedly go away after a certain amount of time (IIRC, after 30 days, the same way that Photos now holds deleted pics for 30 days before finally purging them). But, I typically purge my music files more frequently than that.

So are all you iPad 2 users experiencing better performance with this latest update? Safari is SERIOUSLY stuttery(especially the keyboard lag - drives me insane:mad:) on 8.1, does 8.1.1 fix this ?!

I have an iPad 3 and had the same issues. Safari is WAY better now.

So no fixes for iPhone 5 & above, or am I reading the description wrong?
Definitely at least bug fixes and usually security fixes (which are often not speicified in the overview of the high level changes). Plus the stability and performance upgrades that might be there mainly to help older hardware would likely translate to having some stability and performance improvements for newer hardware too.

It seems to be taking a long time for ym iPad Air 2 to "prepare" the update, perhaps since it is 5 times as large as the update on the iPhone 6.

Apple doesn't very often bring out new features in the ".x" releases, do they? They seemed to make an exception with iOS 8, enabling Apple Play with 8.1, but i can't see features like split-screen multitasking coming out in this release. They would usually hold back a significant feature like that for the next major release.

I hope they fix things like synchronizing keyboard shortcuts and user dictionaries, because that stuff is still broken.
Actually .x updates is where some new features would come in. The .x.x updates are generally for bug fixes and the like.

:O The capacity on my iPad Air (1) went from 113.8 to 114.27 GB (not the stuff that I have on it, but the amount of space available for my stuff)! A new iOS version takes up LESS space!? That's new. iOS has been steadily eating up space for itself for years. Nice.

That would be good news if that's the case. Using apples-to-apples comparisons, Arstechnica observed that the iOS 8 upgrade used up an additional ~0.7 GB compared to 7.1.2. While people griped about the large amount of free space needed to do the OTA iOS upgrade, I thought the extra 0.7 GB of space required after installation was a much bigger issue, particularly for those who have 16 GB devices.

Interestingly I had a lightning cable replaced by the Genius Bar over the weekend, and the Apple rep needed to run diagnostics on one of my devices as a formality. She ran it on my iPad Air 2 and found that there were 28 apps crashing! Hopefully this 346MB update comes with a lot of stability improvements. Granted, I haven't really noticed all of this, but with the extra 1GB of RAM it shouldn't be having all these crashes.

It's more important than ever to simply wait and watch as others gamble by installing any Apple authored so called "upgrade". Apple is seemingly preoccupied, distracted, or otherwise prone to mistakes, errors and the like, the risk is too great for my comfort zone.

I rely on my iP6+ therefore downtime is out of the question. I'm currently running the original OS which has been excellent. Upgrading to have the latest would be completely foolish.

I chose to operate in the "I'll believe it when I see it" mode with Apple. A practice that serves me better than anything they hype. Choosing to not trust Apple pays off handsomely and saves nasty surprises.

So one screw-up in 7 years of software uploads and you're going to hold it against them for how long?

Fyi I downloaded the update immediately and everything works fine, including iMessage.

A little late to the party don't you think?

So apple is now doing something about their engineered obsolescence about making older devices slower??

Why didn't they address the issue when people upgraded their 3gs's to ios 4 which made their phones super slow? Or what about iphone 4 users who upgraded to ios 6 and 7 and now have a useless paper weight?

What a joke. Ios 6 is what pissed me off enough to switch to android.

All well now with iMessage on my iPad 4. Upgraded my 5s as well.

Are you kidding me??!! It appears Apple has STILL NOT fixed the notification bugs that have been around since 8.0 was released! GRRR!! :(

App crashes can be simply there due to some issues in the apps themselves, some bugs there or something like that. Doesn't always have to be something on system level and memory in particular.

Haha same here I gained like 400-500mb on my iPad and iPhone. I think the update may have cleared some music and video cache. Not sure tho but still sweet :D

That's within the norm for whenever I do a minor interval iOS update as well. A lot of that does come from clearing app caches.

You can free up even more space if you restore your device as new before applying the update. You then need to restore from a backup (and if you want your messages restored, you need to do this using a local backup from iTunes). Restoring as a new device will purge all of the system caches as well as garbage data that accumulates in the "Other" directory (mostly from botched app and media downloads).

If you are referring to the lockup when a shortcut is used (ie. email address) in Safari, that seems to be resolved now! I have several in there and 100% of the time if I was in Safari in a field typing and started entering any shortcuts, Safari would lockup and the last letter would be as if the key was pressed (large). So far not longer happening

No, I mean just typing responses here would cause the app to randomly freeze. It was infuriating.

same problem here, im about to go to apple store and get my iphone replace since it makes think its my iphone issue only.

Same here. I'm hoping to go home and download the update and test the wifi issue. It's been annoying.

I just ordered a Airport Extreme today thinking it might be my router and Asus had said no new firmware was expected.

Voicemail

The have updated the Voice mail delete... Allowing you to much more easily delete multiple voice mails...

Yeah I think you are right in regards to the time, it's still sucks tho. It even does this caching for songs bought straight from iTunes and the only way to manually clear space is to sign out and back in to the App Store in settings. Bit annoying

Sounds like the coast is clear.

Going to do the update tonight using iTunes. Still feel safer applying the full installation package, rather than relying on the OTA delta file.

I hope with this update I don't have to turn off wifi anymore because it wasn't working.

Although I agree, I think this is more of just an Apple problem in general. Everyone Apple product I've ever owned (iPad, macbook, appletv, iphone) all will drop my wifi. I finally discovered turning wifi off and back on would temporarily fix it until it inevitably dropped it again the next day.

It's just a theory of mine, but I think my cable company gives me a new IP address every day or so and perhaps this causes the issue. My Windows machines never had the same problem though (before switching to Apple exclusively). And the devices never drop wifi all at the same time, which seems to throw a wrench into my theory.
