Honestly who cares about Emoji and Live Pictures - never use them. Apple should be concentrating on fixing bugs with features most people use, not the other stuff.
Probably because there's much more in the update than just that. And just because someone doesn't use or care about some features/options doesn't mean that there aren't plenty of people who do.

Apple today released iOS 9.1 to the public, marking the first major update to the iOS 9 operating system that launched in September. In testing since before iOS 9 was even released, iOS 9.1 was beta tested for more than a month before its launch, with developers and public beta testers receiving five betas in total.

Today's iOS 9.1 update is available as an over-the-air update to all iOS 9 users. It is the third update to iOS 9 so far, with Apple having previously released iOS 9.0.1 and iOS 9.0.2. Apple has also released Xcode 7.1 and the tvOS golden master (GM), which represents the final version of the software that will be available when the new Apple TV launches next week.

iOS 9.1 has a limited number of outward facing changes. It includes support for Unicode 7 and 8, introducing a range of new emoji like taco, burrito, cheese wedge, middle finger, champagne bottle, unicorn head, and more.

iOS 9.1 includes an update for Live Photos, which now sense when the iPhone is raised or lowered to refrain from recording unnecessary movements. The update also introduces a new Messages option in the Settings app that is designed to allow users to disable photos for contacts, and it brings Apple News to the UK for the first time.

Aside from these changes, iOS 9.1 includes new features and compatibility updates for upcoming Apple products like the fourth-generation Apple TV and the iPad Pro The new Apple TV requires iOS 9.1 to be set up using an iOS device.

iOS 9.1 also includes bug fixes for a number of issues that iOS users have been experiencing, and as with most iOS updates, it enhances performance and introduces important security fixes.

Update: iOS 9.1 includes security updates that break the recent iOS 9 Pangu jailbreak.

Anyone want to explain the point of new emoji that seem to only show up on other devices running iOS 9.1 or the new El Cap update but appear as empty boxes on all other devices/OSs?

You make billions of dollars, and you make an update for emoji..

You are so creative Apple!

What the heck are you on about? My 128gb TSMC pink 6s+ has yet to unexpectedly shut off on me. Maybe you'll get lucky, jinx yourself and get what's coming to you?

What am I talking about? Have you read through all the pages in this thread of phones shutting down needing hard reset to use. Good for you that you've yet to have it happen. Likely I wont either. But I do know this. I went to Apple Store a week ago for something. While I was there I played with some 6s phones. And 4 of the displayed units I touched were all off. I thought something was odd at first. I remembered reading something about it not long after it went on sale. So I rebooted 2 of them to get them to operate. I asked the girl working in that area why all the screens were off just to see what theyd say. I was told it was because they were in demo mode. She completely tried to act like there was no problem. And you could tell it was because there were several customers there shopping.
They need to get their heads out of their asses and fix this. Quit worrying about damn emoji. For most users this phone is a tool. Not just a stupid device where you can send little smiley faces or middle fingers with. This cycle of every year releasing new software is the problem. By the time they start to iron out all the bugs and get a solid version out, its time for newest iOS and they start all over again. What the hell else do we possibly need in new software. Its everything we need. Just fix the bugs dammit

My only gripe is that the 9.1 update turned on iMessage automatically. Apple stop ***** with my settings. At least blue tooth stayed off.

Ya know, now that you mention it, I did see 5 or 6 demo iPhones at the Apple Store that were off. Didn't think much of it. Just thought someone shut them off or they died.

I was running the beta so not much different than that. It was a tad smoother though & my email is fixed. I'm satisfied

I got unknown error 3004 three times trying to update through iTunes. Screw this, deleted the update file and will go to bed and try tomorrow.

Edit: well guess what, a new version of iTunes is available. Probably why it failed.
I update on iTunes 12.3 over Windows 10, no problem.

The POP bug is much bigger than searching or unread mail count. The one I'm talking about shows all previously downloaded mail with attachments as unavailable. Guessing it hasn't been fixed.

Sorry you didn't exactly clarify what POP Bug you meant
( apparently there was multiple bugs )

The bug this addresses is false/inaccurate POP E-Mail message counts/totals

At least that's the only 1 mentioned in the changelogs.

I don't use POP so I can't say what else may or may not of been fixed. I would hope that iOS 9.2 ( if there is a 9.2 ) will include more fixes

The only thing they fixed was Jailbreak...LOL. Is that what you call "performance improvement?" 9.1 is a joke, Apple.
What is up with 150 emoji...is that update-click bait?

Man, does this fix performance on the original Air and the 6 Plus? My friend's iPad 4 and iPhone 5 run iOS 9 better than my 6 plus and Air 1 do, which is a disgrace.
Yeah. I can see too obvious game lag on my iPhone 6 Plus.
Don't know how serious Apple want to drag down only one year old phone and make it run iOS 9 Soooooo slow.

Settings still does not open at the top of the list. Although minor it tells me no care is taken in testing usability. Why add search to settings and hide it at the top?

Having compared most the betas with 5s /6s (9.0-9.1), honestly the 5s was just as good and sometimes better early on, and now the 6s feels sooooooo good :)

I didn't even notice that... Wow. Mine does the same thing.
Yep I first spotted with 9.0. Oh well at least they appear to be knocking out other bugs. This one just makes me laugh because I think how many times a tester would be going in to settings and it seems to go un-noticed.

While the rest of the world embraces more emotive graphical communication through the likes of LINE via clever and searchable (by text) stickers, we are stuck with the stupid emoji. The Japanese don't even really use them anymore. Taco? Unicorn head? Yeah. Useful.
