This is what I keep on getting

Hang in there! Just keep trying! I got this error messages too and after three tries of unplugging and plugging the iPhone back to the sync cable, it finally was able to activate it.

I just tried this as well....unplugging and plugging back in. Im now up and running after waiting for about half an hour trying to connect to itunes. Coincidence? Probably but its working now nonetheless.

For the last time, 3GS ONLY.

Thanks.... thought it was for all since it doesn't seem like it'd need anything special to display it...

Also.... is anyone having trouble with backing up their iPhone after the update? I was 70% done when some ******* telemarketer called in the middle of my backup and now all I get is a Candy Cane Progress bar saying Backing Up iPhone but.... its been like this for like 20 minutes....

Update Error

I've tried to click update at least 15 times and keep seeing the same error message:

"...iPhone activation server is temporarily unavailable."

Okay - since updating to 3.0, my iPhone (1st gen) is blazing hot & my friends are sending me texts, but I receive none.

We could not complete your iTunes Store request. The network connection timed out.

WTF Steve!!!

Before I freaked out, I decided to take the advice of some on this forum and restart my mac. It worked. Probably just a long cue for activation servers, though. Don't panic, just be patient and proud of Apple's dominate market share.

Also, noticed that the "type" of phone (home, mobile, work) appears under name of caller in recent and voicemail panes. Nice touch. Keep up the good work, Apple.

i fixed it by putting my iPhone into restore mode. but i was going to restore anyway. i already had the gm but i wanted a fresh install because i never did a fresh install with betas.

It took two tries and now the whole thing is in Dutch language - my Indbakke is full. What happened ???? I guess I will have to do a Restore after all.

I'm sorry, I don't mean to laugh at your problem, but that's just too funny!! :p

"my indbakke is full" . . . LOL.

I think you can change the language settings on your iPhone. Try navigating to the option. Or it might be available in iTunes...

Activation Error

I got the activation error as well. After 4 attempts of disconnecting and reconnecting the cable to connect to iTunes the phone finally activated. If you're getting the error message just keep trying - it will eventually go thru.

One problem (dunno if it's been mentioned):

iPod touch 2G, upgraded to 3.0 fine. However, in Settings > General > Home, there are options for changing what the double-click of a home button does. Is this for all apps or just on the home screens, cause I can't get it to change to out of the iPod controls...

EDIT: never mind, got it working, 3.0 is as smooth as silk atm.

I am thinking or wondering now, if the reason the long wait for the backup of the iPhone after installing 3.0 is because of the server use by everyone updating. Maybe this will go faster in future back ups? What do you think?
by letting my phone do a sync-backup, I lost 2 weeks of info (text, phone contacts and cal) :p

Yes!

100% AGREED! Nothing annoys me more then when my phones goto into coverflow mode when Im driving.

I hate that too. I pull up to a drive through or get a phone call and reach over to my iPod Touch to pause it and it is in cover flow mode (which is only good for showing off IMO as it has not other value that I can think of) and so I either have to find the tiny little play/pause soft button in a corner or stand it up and pause it where I am used to pausing it. I don't know WHY they don't put this as an option in settings.

I finally just got it.

Once it started showing the different -4 error message, had to disconnect the iphone and reconnect in iTunes, then do that one more time, and then it said "iphone activated" :)

I think the error people are getting is likely because the server is getting bogged down with all the people downloading the upgrade. It gave the error once and I waited a few minutes and tried it again and it worked. I would just keep trying.

Now I just need the 3GS to go with 3.0.

Thanks. I'll give that a try if the next 10 or so attempts don't work.

Yes I agree, CoverFlow is worthless to me, and probably most people. I've never actually "used" it, just when I got my first 2g iPhone and said, "hey, look at what my phone can do."

Tethering works!...posting this via USB tethering. Wonder what billing implications will be though (no bolt-on)
