5.6 makes it where you can never tether. /just kidding

I'll stick with 3.0 and the 6.0 carrier file, until I see a clear reason to upgrade (or downgrade the carrier file). I had earlier went to 3.1, but all that did (for me) was make moving icons around easier. I finally needed tethering for attending a funeral , so I'm pretty much stuck with 3.0 for now, if I want to use the 6.0 carrier file.

I wonder how many new problems will be created with this latest update?

Actually you're correct. Before 3.1.2 I had a tethering info in my usage area and now it's gone.

How did you go back to 3.0 ? I understand Apple killed the ability to downgrade after 3.1.

Does anyone know if this fixes any YouTube video playback issues? Has anyone had any good luck playing Youtube? My videos take forever to download and most of the time they do not get past a few seconds and playback stops. Rewind and play start the time offset but nothing plays back.

Oh really? Do you think turning off all those "power hungry items" will help my battery life, which as of last time was 42 minutes of usage and 2 hours of standby? No exaggeration!
3GS here. Still on 3.0.1 I leave WiFi and BT on all day. When I go to plug in the phone to charge in the evening the battery is only at about half-way. I could probably get away with another day without charging.

The only thing that could make 3.1.2 worse for me is if it rendered my phone completely useless.

The Genius told me that the 3.1 issues mostly affected people with PCs, not Macs. I think he's full of it. All he was going to do was upgrade the firmware on my phone, so I decided to leave and do it myself. I guess if I would have gone yesterday maybe I would have gotten a new phone

I hope this fixes the voice memo bug. I can't seem to record more than approx 35mins long... which is useless.

The fix is called turning off Push.

No it's not, turning off push makes no difference to my battery life issues.

Also why should I turn off a feature to get battery life that I used to have? How about the problem just gets fixed...

Same here (16GB 3GS), but I've had excellent battery since I bought the phone in July (3.0).

I have BT, WIFI, about 65% screen brightness with auto-brightness turned on, and Push on my Exchange account (manual fetch on Gmail since I don't need to check those throughout the day).

I am a heavy email user, and by the end of the day (around 7:00 PM) my phone is still around 50-60 % so I can't complaint.

This is the case also for two other iPhones that I've also purchased for my company at the same time.

Anything over 30 mins. isn't a memo it's a dissertation.

Actually a dissertation is a long report or essay.

And secondly, on Apple's website, it mentions you can record lectures which can be 2hrs. After contacting Apple and reporting the problem, they confirmed to me that this was a known issue and would be fixed.

Still no wireless syncing? Why on earth does Apple force you to connect physically by USB?

As much as I'd love to see that happen, but sorry, I use every bit of space on my iphone and there is no way I'm going to sync 32 GB over the air, let alone 64GB for iPod Touch users.

Maybe once Apple decides to "activate" the iphone 3GS wireless N functionality though....

Get the battery replaced.

for those interested, the exploit has not been patched by Apple. GeoHot's JB software still works on 3.1.2, according to his twitter post:

"phew, dodged a bullet with 3.1.2...still vulnerable and blackra1n worked perfectly on my 3gs" http://twitter.com/Geohot

It is hoped this tool is released within the next couple of days. JB will be available for those who desire it.

I'd at least like OTA OS upgrades sometime soon - blackberrys have them now and the Pre and Android. Just so cool everyone's moving in that direction.

downloading firmware with someone else's 3GS to get the firmware and hopefully pawnage 3.1.3 will recognize it and create a custom firmware without any troubles.

i had been holding at 3.0 due to JB and the 3.1 issues but there are a few apps that only work on 3.1 that i was tired of waiting for and was seriously just about to JB to 3.1 when i saw this post about about 3.2 :)

scratch that pawnage will need to be updated :( hopefully it will be a quick fix

I hope this update fixes some other issues. I have some problems with email as I will only get them when I open the app even though I have push on. I also sometimes do not get a sound when I receive a text message. The last thing I hope it fixes is voice control over bluetooth where sometimes it works and other times it doesn't. Since I got my phone on day one when it came out this 3.1 is the first update that is causing some issues.

So you re-sync 32GBs everytime you sync? May I ask why? For 99% of the users, syncing means downloading new podcasts or adding a few songs they downloaded. For many of us, wireless sync'ing would be a huge feature addition.

Perhaps the battery issues are to do with the intermittant issues with cellular coverage. If the phone is trying to search for the network more then perhaps the battery is draining quicker. Any thoughts?
