I'm assuming that it's for the 3GS/iPT3G only, since I can already use the iPod controls (the popup box) on my 3G in beta 2 (beta 1 broke it).

oh wow, yeah that sucks. 3gs or multitasking future phones only then.

I disagree. I don't believe its that kind of beta. I'm paying good money to Apple and one of my perks is to get the betas. Apple gets my cash and they get to have 4.0 applications ready on release date. Nothing more.

Maybe I'm missing something but the very definition of the term Beta implies that there will be testing and reporting back to the company, especially in a closed beta such as this. I have not yet seen a single beta that wasn't conducted in that way (not counting the release versions of every piece of MS software).

Regardless of arguing semantics:
Keep in mind that, if you truly are concerned with only testing your own software, one of my apps stopped working between beta 1 and beta 2. If that little change to the OS was a permanent change, then you would never know if your software worked if you stuck with beta 1 until release.

also, even though it says itunes doesnt support folders, all of my folders are still there after syncing this time.

Just don't install a new app from iTunes, though. That'll nuke your folders.

I had native multitasking on my 3G when beta 1 was jailbroken, but I don't like the way it works. It seems that every app that supports multitasking will stay backgrounded after I exit it, which gobbles up my RAM. Not sure if it's supposed to be like that, or if I'm wrong, but I don't like Apple's multitasking implementation.

I'll stick with Backgrounder + Kirikae :).

Still not sure if I'm going to get the next iPhone. Unless it can take my socks off and give me a foot rub, then I probably won't. I usually say that about a lot of things and end up buying them anyway because of all the hype :'(. If I really don't, then the Dell Thunder it is.

From the iTunes app on the actual device, or through iTunes on a computer? I'm assuming it's on the device... That's a bummer.

EDIT: Nevermind... Maybe you can clarify what you're talking about?

In Beta 2 as long as you didn't use the apps tab the folders will remain intact even if you download and install new program. Haven't tested yet to see if this is the case with beta 3.

He's talking about the actual iTunes application on the computer. The AppStore on the device works just fine. Downloading a new app from iTunes will kill the folders, updating an up works fine. On the AppStore in the iphone, you can download new apps but there's a bug that won't let you update apps.

Combine the two and you have a working system. Here's hoping the update thing of the appstore is fixed.

The issue was not with the betas, but with iTunes 9.1 not supporting folders.
Have you tried with the new version of iTunes? (9.1.1 - released a few days ago).

I was stating that the folder remain intact for me. I have been able to download and install new programs from itunes or updates and the folders stayed. If I used the apps tab to remove or reinstall an app then the folders are done. This is normal as many people I know have found the same.

it still doesn't support folders I had a few apps kicked out a folder when I installed a new app

I'm on Beta 1 and guessing I'm gonna have to install the SDK to get to Beta 3.

I tried installing Beta 3 and it extracts the software, says it's connecting to Apple's servers and then iTunes immediately crashes.

Anyone else having this issue?

its not. just install the beta and see yourself.

OK. It's just that it looks so bad to me.

1. It looks out of place as it's not related to multitasking.
2. It's got a frame around the lock icon whereas the other apps don't
3. They've used all capitals to describe an orientation lock.

Maybe if it goes away and the bar reverts to just apps or contains a full array of other OS buttons it would be better.

I agree, it looks awful.

If you snag the a leaked beta 3 retore file from the internets, will it work without registration?

Nope Itunes will check apples database and if your phone is not registered it will not let you proceed.

I agree, it does look a little odd, but Settings, YouTube, and Calculator all have frames/borders around their icons. Settings, in fact, looks almost identical to the lock icon except for the 'lock'.

Yes, I just downloaded the Beta 3 OS image, went back to download the Beta 3 SDK so I could install it and now all the Beta 3 stuff is completely removed.

I had to downgrade my firmware this weekend back to 3.1.3. I loved testing beta 1, never moved to beta 2, but I need to have Find My iPhone working. I could even deal without screenshots, but not being able to hunt down the device if its lost is too much of a liability for me unfortunately. The backup situation is also an irritant. I wish I had an extra device to test with. Anyway. Need to test on 3.1.3 anyway.
