I just found out that the 3GS won't support the location reminders. That kind of.. defeats the whole point of the reminders app.

Wi-Fi syncing was one of my most anticipated features, but it turns out that it sucks. Your iPhone/iPad still has to be plugged into a power source. Cut the cord my butt.

I think just as long as your battery is over 50% its fine. I've been using wifi sync since beta 3 now & its been (for the most part) working fine without being on a power source.

Absolutely not true - Your device will sync automatically when plugged in, but you can kick off a wireless sync any time you want by manually pressing the "Sync Now" button

funny how iTunes is not distributed by the MAS for Mac users

It's considered part of the operating system, so Software Update it is.

As for why it's considered part of the OS; I have no idea. Maybe it has lots of internal hooks that are used by other parts of the OS. Who knows.

The GPS chip from the iPhone 4 was greatly improved, faster acquisition and a lot lower power draw. It looks like they found in the early betas that location-based notification just wasn't viable with the 3GS.

Well, it has dedicated keys on the keyboard (back, forward, play/pause). I suspect that is a tip that they feel it is a system object.

Not sure if its been said, but they'd of had to release it early now that users in Germany have their 4S's early ...

MR, you should update the story - it makes it sound like this update enables iTunes Match which isn't coming out for a couple weeks.

were still expecting a 10.6.9 right?

Good question. It's rumored but nobody knows for sure yet. I sure hope so, so people on 10.6 can use iCloud.

Podcasts

If you subscribe to a podcast will it automatically get downloaded on my phone when available? If yes, can that be done via 3g or is wifi only

Your iPhone/iPad doesn't need to be plugged into a power source to sync wirelessly. Apple just says that so people don't go syncing when their battery level is at 2%.
... and to cover their asses, in case someone tries to pull a class action lawsuit, claiming their device was bricked, because the battery ran out, whilst using Apple's feature.

Good to see iTunes no longer comes bundled with Quicktime. That was horrid.

Now, let's hope that the untethered iOS5 jailbreak is in the pipeline.

I believe this is only when your battery is low

wow this has been explained numerous time. it is automatic when your are charging and connected to your network. you can do it anytime by settings>general>itunes wifi sync>sync now

Just a heads up to anyone using a previous beta for iTunes Match, this release doesn't work with the beta service. No menu items for it, and when you go into your iTunes Store settings, theres the option to add the computer, clicking the button successfully adds the machine to your account, but doesn't actually make iTunes load the Match Library.

Can you not just force a local backup by right-clicking the iPhone under the device list in iTunes?

I am not sure ... don't have my home Mac in front of me. But it's not that big a deal to switch between backing up to iTunes or iCloud. It's on the device summary screen in iTunes. Just a little selection box that says "Backup to iTunes" and another that says "Backup to iCloud". It just takes a click to switch where you want to backup to.

OMG! They FINALLY fixed the issue for Windows people who have their taskbar on top! For the past couple of releases, the full screen mode of itunes wouldn't maximize properly and the minimize, restore, and close buttons would get hidden behind the taskbar.

Was so frustrating having to keep moving the taskbar to the side each time I accidentally maximized and had to close iTunes. SO GLAD it's finally fixed. :D

The Dawning Of A New Era

Some aspects of the cloud simply will not work for the majority of us because of poor signals or we can't afford unlimited data packages, which is where the (or Network Computer in '80s tech speak) becomes a non-starter.

One place I can see it winning in is in the home. With all my music in the cloud, attached to my home WiFi I don't need a Squeezebox type device and can control everything from my iDevice, and the same goes for anyone else in the house. And when I visit friends, with dubious music tastes, "Have you heard this one…" becomes easy. It could mean a lot of new music gets out there more easily, then we'd all be happier :)

Ps It's The Specials if you were wondering (now what to do…)
