I really want to try out the new iTunes, but I want to make sure too that if I decide to go back to version 11 after a couple of days, I’ll be able to just do that.

How should I proceed?

You should be able to backup your iTunes library files in your itunes music folder and save them somewhere. Then update. If you want to go back should be able to copy those library files back. The update will update those files to the new version so if you dont back them up you cant go back. (unless start out fresh again) **This is with Windows version**
iTunes Library.itl
iTunes Library Extras.itdb
iTunes Library Genius.itdb
iTunes Music Library.xml

Or just copy the entire iTunes folder somewhere if you want. That should do it. Haven't tried it yet with 12 but see no reason it wouldn't work. Definitely back up those files before you do anything drastic. I will post back as I am planning on doing this with 12 to verify it works.

I love my music library too much to run risks. Please report back if you confirm that the downgrade is possible, so I follow the same path. ;)

I think it's an excellent update. It looks good, feels nicely pared back compared to previous versions, little things like the playlists flashing when you drop a song on to it are lovely little touches. and runs slickly with no bugs so far.

And this comes from the user of a 4 year old budget Windows 7 laptop user...

Seriously, rich arrogant people need to stop complaining about the idea of supporting older hardware. One of the great things about Apple hardware is that it can last for decades. It gets passed down through the family, sold on eBay and just keeps on working. Legacy support is a good thing. Apple has the many billions of dollars kicking around and by providing legacy support they gain more customers who buy their content and may buy new hardware in the future. You need to be so short sighted and stop complaining about other people's older computers. Alternatively, buy everyone brand new hardware.

Please take comprehension class because I was not talking about the age if a Mac.

OK all set. I just about wasn't able to do this. Had a heck of a time installing iTunes 12 on Windows 8.1. The upgrade failed (permissions error on an iTunes resources folder). The manual full download failed too, same error. So ended up uninstalling iTunes and Apple Software update and that solved the issue and 12 went just fine. Then I liked 12 so much better almost decided to leave well enough alone. I really like what I saw in the few minutes I used it. I can see this is going to be an improvement no question.

But in the name of science, I uninstalled iTunes 12, copied those saved library files mentioned from my backup and installed iTunes 11.4 again. All good! Everything works as before so should be good to go IF for whatever reason you don't like version 12. Back to uninstall again and get 12 back on my PC!

**Windows 8.1 version**

so the sidebar is dead. What is with the 'new' Apple forcing these illogical changes on us? Nothing that I can see was broken with having a sidebar in iTunes. It made it easy to navigate.
Ditto for the Camera Roll folder in IOS 8.0.
What did deep sixing either of those accomplish?

I use the side bar with list view only 100% of the time. This view is retained in the playlist mode. All other views I show to my mates to show them how slick it looks once then revert to list view. If they took list view away from itunes I would immediately ditch it. It's by far the best way to curate your library.

Wow, they achieved the impossible and made it even worse than iTunes 11. Organisational nightmare.

if you're on mavericks and install this, you won't be able to downgrade or even delete it. You get the "this thing is required by OS X" so you're stuck with 12

No actually quite the opposite. I too was "married" to the side bar and went into panic when iTunes 11 came out and thought it was gone. This version really makes it so its not needed. The playlist selection gives you a sidebar similar to what was there. But the entire app is more well organized overall. I never got used to 11 from 10 on how to do anything. Always having to figure it out (as I am not in iTunes that often). This version seems way more obvious how to navigate than iTunes 11 ever was. Spend a few minutes in there with an open mind instead of an "since its different then it MUST be worse" attitude and you may just agree.

Oh, I thought you were using OS X. In that case it might be a whole different story.

Thanks anyway for taking the time to experiment with the downgrade. :)

I think this is possibly the best version they've ever released. It's simple and it just works. Isn't that what people have been complaining about?

are you going to take that from apple?

Maybe I have not been following this correctly, but has no-one else noticed that iTune 12.0.x will actually sync Music libraries with an iPhone with iOS 8 or later? I may be in the wrong thread but I could not sync my Music library with my iPhone. All none iTunes purchased content would not sync. This version cures the issue. Is this me or my friends (who had the same issue) but iTunes 11.x did not work with iOS 8? BTW there is a thread on MacRumors that talks about this issue.

To me iTunes 12.x is a blessing in disguise. I can actually sync my music library. Apple Geniuses gave up but here we are with a new version that works. Has Apple really sunk this low?

Ugh. Hate. In iTunes 11, when you used to click on a TV Show, it would elegantly slide down and reveal the episode description. Now I have to do a Cmd+i and click on the description tab if I want to see what the episode is about. That's annoying and was unnecessarily removed.

One more nit:

In Albums view, sorting can be by "Sort by: Artist, Then: Year", because the Albums view has two criteria - which is as it should be.

Unfortunately, sorting albums in Albums view is kind of pointless since in Albums view playback stops dead in its tracks when the end of an album is reached.

That is not how iTunes used to work. iTunes used to automatically continue on to the next album. They broke that a few versions ago.

So as a workaround, we're forced to explore, say, Songs view if we want iTunes to NOT stop playing when it reaches the end of an album. And that is where the problem really begins, because the sorting options in Songs view and Artist view are too limited.

These kinds of overlooked problems have always bothered me with iTunes.

At last I have hope that Apple is starting to pay attention to iTunes again. Maybe they'll start tweaking these sorts of things.

sjmadd

Now that I can only access my photos in Finder, should I delete iphoto? In spite of using "Upgrader" on iphoto in conjunction with Yosemite, I am no longer
able to open iphoto. In case anyone wonders...in spite of having a Mac since leopard, I am no techie!!

I hear you on iTunes' little annoyances.
But the good news is that in Songs view you can sort 'Album by Artist/Year' - keep clicking on the Album column until it comes up.

I have to agree. Nice fresh look too. Loads a lot faster as well. At least the Windows version is. Cant speak to the OS X version but would stand to reason its even better than the Windows version.
