I really need to use app sync, I have apps that I purchased but are no longer available. And I have apps that I purchased with different accounts, if I want to update those on my iPhone, either I sign out my main iTunes account, which has Music subscription and signing out deletes all the downloaded songs, or I sync them using iTunes on my Mac, which dose no damage.

Thank god they also made Time Machine! Just registered to share this method.
I restored the previous version of iTunes so I can still use app sync.
You'll need to use the terminal command "tmutil" to do this, rather than using regular GUI Time Machine, because it only allows you to replace a file of same name, but iTunes.app can't be deleted.

First, open terminal and use the following command:
Code:
tmutil listbackups
The result should look like the following, and there should be multiple lines of it:
Code:
/Volumes/[Backup Disk]/Backups.backupdb/[Your Mac]/[YYYY-MM-DD-HHMMSS]

So pick up one of this, make sure the backup time is before you updated your iTunes, copy that line, and use it in the following command, don't miss the quotation marks:
Code:
tmutil restore -v "/Volumes/[Backup Disk]/Backups.backupdb/[Your Mac]/[YYYY-MM-DD-HHMMSS]/Macintosh HD/Applications/iTunes.app" "/Applications/iTunes 12.6.app"
This will restore the previous iTunes to your /Application folder and save it as iTunes 12.6.app.

Next, restore the previous library database, substitute your username in the following command, again, don't miss the quotation marks:
Code:
tmutil restore -v "/Volumes/[Backup Disk]/Backups.backupdb/[Your Mac]/[YYYY-MM-DD-HHMMSS]/Macintosh HD/Users/[Your Username]/Music/iTunes/iTunes\ Library.itl" "/Users/[Your Username]/Music/iTunes/iTunes Library 12.6.itl"

Last step, go to /Users/[Your Username]/Music/iTunes in Finder, and rename the current "iTunes Library.itl" as "iTunes Library 12.7.itl", and rename "iTunes Library 12.6.itl" as "iTunes Library.itl".

Now launch "/Applications/iTunes 12.6.app" from Finder, the app sync is back!

In case you want to switch to the latest iTunes, just make sure that "iTunes Library 12.7.itl" is "iTunes Library.itl" and "iTunes Library 12.6.itl" is something else.

Not true for me. My mom is included in my Family Share and never gets any apps I purchase - only ones she chooses.

You can either turn it on or off per-device, so you either get every app or you don't.

At this point the # of devices I manage is so big that I used the iTunes app manager to delete old apps, because they pile up like flotsam. It's awkward to delete apps on iOS, especially if there are lots of them.

Whatever, at some point they'll probably make an "Apps" app...maybe in a year or two once people complain.

What if you made your own custom ringtones?

Yeah, I was just about to ask that. I've made a lot of custom ringtones that I don't want to lose. What happens to them now?

Yeah i was wondering the same. I have custom ringtones which I havent changed in years anyway, but still...

How do you go about installing a ring tone that you have made on your Mac now?

If you read the linked help article... it links to another article.... "If you have an iOS app, ringtone, or book that's no longer available for redownload, you can move that content to your iOS device while plugged in to a computer with a USB cable." Doesn't sound like any reason that a custom ringtone wouldn't work.

I currently backup all my devices to iTunes (via Wi-Fi) because... well, the measly 5GB that Apple gives for free is just not enough to back up two 256GB devices (iPhone and iPad Pro) and my 20Mbps broadband connection would make a full restore (or backup) a very painfully slow multi-day affair.

If I lose the functionality to manage my iDevice local backups via iTunes, then Apple had better offer a lot more free storage before they force me to backup to iCloud.

That's fine for ones you've had in the past. But going forward if you can't download ipas anymore what happens when apps get discontinued in the future?

I guess Apple would rather 100% of people get better performance at the expense of 1% of total users who used that outdated functionality.

I am that 1%, and I'm actually happy if it's going to make iTunes user friendly again. As long as it restores my apps when I restore via iTunes like before, then I definitely don't mind this at all. The first good change to come to iTunes since iTunes 12 was released if it causes performance to be so much better.

I stopped doing this about a year ago. Haven't had a need to. It helped in the past when I didn't have wifi at work and a small cell data plan.

I recently did a restore on iPhone from a local backup. It sent all the files to iPhone then had to download all my apps. I can see this being an issue with data caps or if you're downloading them over cell.

I don't like crap automatically downloading onto my portable devices.

so you're first come you mention hoe you download the same app to multiple devices yet then complain you don't like it being done automatically. It's real hard to to tap that X and delete if you don't want it.

First world problems.

Great decision Apple. Who downloads iOS apps on their Mac anyway?
  • People who don't want to redownload an app every time they want to install it? Apps can go into the gigabytes in size for some games.
  • People who have apps Apple later removed from the app store for various reasons? I still have iMame on my iTunes' app collection.

Yes, we live in the first world. Don't you?

Edit: in fact, I have 12 devices in my family that I manage. So yes, this is a problem, though a minor one. It ranks up there with lubricating the gaskets on my convertible.

Is iMame 64bit? If not, aren't they killing 32bit apps from functioning in iOS11?

I guess that is your view of how this serves Apple's customers. I'll let Apple know what I think. :p

It will be so thrilling to download the same app multiple times to multiple mobile devices, believe me. Over DSL, rated 3mpbs. Outdated functionality my a$$. I liked updating it once on my laptop and applying it five times on five mobile devices via iTunes.

Downloading it multiple times sounds really stupid. Is there eventually going to be an app manager app instead, and Apple just didn't realize how many people have data caps, multiple mobiles, slow net connections? Wow. "Elitist" is not a word I throw around a lot but I could probably retrain myself.

Yes, and if I don't want an app on multiple devices I just delete it. Much easier than hand selecting what apps to download to each.

DSL?

My sympathies.
