How do 85 people vote an update as Negative? Maybe I just don't understand the pos/neg thing, but it seems like there could be a headline: "Apple cures cancer" and 100 people would say it's negative.

Could be that the update broke their system. My G4 Mini had a problem after the update but I don't know yet if it was a one time deal unrealated to the update or if 10.4.9 is broken. I'll have to do some more testing and wait and see. What be good if Apple had a rel Beta program where they put the release out for a month with the label "beta" But no, they just push the update out

Where are my keyboard shortcuts!

control+eject
option+:apple: + eject

NOOOOOO!

Oh, nevermind. Seems like I have to hold the eject button longer than before.
...Or my keyboard is just suddenly breaking...

Installation went fine on my iMac. I like the Eject button change. But the most important fix for me is that the volume now actually get's saved after a reboot when external speakers are connected. I know not everyone had this problem, but I certainlu wasn't the only one.

Nice job Apple.

Spotlight Update?

Not sure what Apple delivered in this update but suddenly my Spotlight searches are ninja-fast. As far as I am concerned this has taken them 9 releases to get right but better late than never. Hurrah!

Double-Click to open folders

Since updating, I can no longer double-click to open folders on the desktop or in the home folder. I have to two-finger click and open. Anyone else have this problem or know of a fix?

10.4.9 upgrade went great macPro 2.66... Aperture faster

My update seems to have gone just fine. Uninstalled Tiger Cache Cleaner prior to install. Repaired permissions before and after. First couple of re-boots were slower but then booted as normal. Safari seems faster. Aperture loads about 100% faster. Didn't see much difference in iPhoto. Just getting ready for CS3 and the new cat to arrive...:D

Front Row doesn't show album artwork for me.
Indeed.
I see a much bigger use for the artwork "flipping" in Front Row. You can't use your remote flipping through the different covers in iTunes. If you want to view the next cover you have to go through the entire song list on the previous album.

Ever since I installed this, everything seems to just fly. iTunes doesnt lag when I have it in album view nor do I get the occasional slow downs. I'm very pleased with this update, much needed.

iTunes Problem Solved

Referring to my problem with iTunes after the update (on page 17), it was because of my ipod shuffle (g2). Disconnected it from the dock and now everything works fine.. Strange though how it came to this :p

Im very happy with this update. Everything on my macbook core 2 duo is loads faster..snappier..my speakers sound a lot better than they use to, they dont sound like im pissing in an empty glass anymore:p

Finder and spotlight are clearly faster now for me!

That's progress, others should work now after a restart. I'm assuming you had a disc in there when you couldn't open it the first time.

*** One thing I did notice is you have to actually HOLD the eject button for it work now.

FINALLY!! I'm always hitting it by accident with my stupid fat fingers, and it was really annoying

The speaker volume and the volume of the headphone jack are separate now.
So the OS now remembers what loudness you have for each one.

It's always been that way...don't know why it hadn't worked for you before.

I've also noticed a louder volume- I'm playing on level "2" and I think it's loud.

I haven't been able to check this, but before I would start a video chat and my input volume would automatically lower...really annoying because I like it all the way up and it changes every time I have a video chat. Has this been fixed? Have you all noticed this problem?

Also, did anyone notice that in one of these newer iTunes (I think, but I am not sure, this newest iTunes) the visualizer looks a bit better? Though they seemed to have kept the visualization itself somewhat low-resolution, they made the text, album artwork, and Apple logo appear much better than before.

I noticed that, not that you mentioned it.

RAM not fully recognized after update

Smooth update process for my Rev A G5 Dual 2GHz PowerMac with 4GB RAM using 10.4.9 Combo updater, repairing permissions before and after (not finding anything to repair). 10.4.9 seems to be stable without kernel panics and all applications load normally.

However, after final reboot, two of my four 1GB "Samsung original" RAM modules are recognized as 512MB only, resulting in a total of 3 GB of RAM recognized. This was not changed by switching modules to different slots and all slots are seen in System Profiler. The two other modules are fully recognized as 1GB. All RAM is appropriately placed from "inner" slots to "outer" slots as before.

No problems with full recognition of each 1GB RAM module with Tiger 10.4 until this update.

I've emailed OWC Tech support and am awaiting a response.

Any suggestions?

I noticed a humongous difference with the bluetooth update and scrolling update on my macbook c2d that i am using as an apple tv at the moment
i was having jerky mouse syndrome but withe this update and some new lithiums i can use the use the mouse from the couch now Yay!

So many bugs... Apple must have done something drastic here. One theory I read was that Apple was going to add some forward-compatibility with Leopard in their last major release before it - if the last release is indeed 10.4.9, then that could explain some things...

But if there are so many bugs, how did Apple not catch them? Perhaps it was one programmer who simply made a last minute change, or forgot to include a file, and "oops". If it was something so simple, we might see a patch in the next few days.

If it is forward-compatibility, though, there is a possibility that there will be no patches.

For the record, the update went perfectly on my MacBook Pro. Haven't tried it on my iMac, or my family's other iMac, MacBook, or PowerBook. Bit scared to now, actually.

Sorry, what bugs? My system is perfect after the update, as usual...and the Eject key thing is NOT a bug, just an adjustment in the eject timing...

By the way, I agree with the Spotlight comments...what was already good is simply great now!

Folder with ? mark no start up, Fixed

Hello all, earlier in this thread around page 5 i think i mentioned that my Blackbook c2d did not start up and only showed a Folder with a Q mark.

The promblem was fixed only after i restarted from tghe orig install dvd, then run diskutility to repair the disk and its permissions, and then while working from the dvd choose the start up disk from the macbook, all other methods to choose the start up disk failed.

So thanks to all who reacted, and tio the one person that said theta means you need a new HD in post 389 i think it was, that is offiuslly not the case in my case ;-).

Thanks for replying all ;-).

Screensaver preferences still crash when trying to select the iTunes Artwork screensaver. Any idea how to fix that?

[edit] Ouch... deleted that screensaver's plist file, and everything works fine again.

Worth it alone for the quicker Spotlight searches and much louder speakers (MacBook CD).

Forgot to say thanks, dr_lha. But about your recommendation to ditch debian; I'm surprised this update hosed my system - I haven't had a problem upgrading my debian boxes in years. I thought this was the kind of thing that was supposed to be easier when switching to a mac :)

You're welcome. Its funny I've never had an issue with updates on Mac OS X (including updating 5 machines to 10.4.9 in the last 24 hours). However last time I updated my debian box it totally hosed my wifi networking. The samba thing is weird though, I'll have to try a samba mount on my machine now and see if I see any issues.

I'm happy to introduce you to the hard edged geeky side of Mac OS X, i.e. single user mode. ;)

again does anyone know if a logitech usb web cam will work with ichat now?

Logitech USB webcam will work with iChat... but if you're using an Intel Mac, Logitech hasn't yet released a universal version of any of their webcams' drivers, and Rosetta DOES NOT like Logitech's USB webcams at all... on Intel Macs, the USB cams will work (here and there), but the camera will crash iChat (eventually, or all the time). it will be a hard crash too, so you will not be able to force-quit the application (which only a system restart will cure).

Hmm... I have always deleted the album art embedded into songs bought from iTunes but use the "Get Album Artwork" from the iTunes menu. However, even before this update, the iTunes Screensaver says that their is no artwork it my iTunes Library... I think it is searching for embeded artwork. Is there any way to have it look for the artwork that was later downloaded via the "Get Album Artwork" link?
