A Microsoft update of Office 2004 screwed up Excel on a new iMac 24". It would crash just after it loaded. This 10.4.9 update fixed Excel :)

No problems with the update on the iMac, a 17" MacBook Pro, iMac G5 or a PowerMac G5. The PPC computers seem a bit quicker/snappier than when they were on 10.4.8.

Where are my keyboard shortcuts!

control+eject
option+:apple: + eject

NOOOOOO!

Oh, nevermind. Seems like I have to hold the eject button longer than before.
...Or my keyboard is just suddenly breaking...
Yes, this fixes an annoying bug on Intel Macs (at least laptops) where you didn't have to hold down the eject button to eject a CD. On Powerbooks you have to hold down the button for a couple of seconds to eject, this stops you ejecting the disk by tapping eject by mistake.

This fixes one of the more annoying bugs on my MacBook Pro, which was every time my finger touched eject by mistake my CD drive would whir into life. Thanks Apple.

As for those keyboard shortcuts you listed, they still work - you just have to wait a few seconds. Not that hard is it?

Nice to see support for other USB webcams in iChat-hopefully this will reduce the reliance on software such as iChatUSBCam. Or perhaps not, could be only for the built-in iSight.

I'll be downloading 10.4.9 on my Mini tomorrow.

Didn't work with my Logitech Communicate STX.

Logitech USB webcam will work with iChat... but if you're using an Intel Mac, Logitech hasn't yet released a universal version of any of their webcams' drivers, and Rosetta DOES NOT like Logitech's USB webcams at all... on Intel Macs, the USB cams will work (here and there), but the camera will crash iChat (eventually, or all the time). it will be a hard crash too, so you will not be able to force-quit the application (which only a system restart will cure).

Does this only work with Logitech-supplied drivers? My Communicate STX that works with the macam driver and iChatUSBCam doesn't work for me in iChat without iChatUSBCam.

Garbled message text in Mail.app

Hello,

This update caused me an annoying problem. :( Some of my messages are now unreadable. See pic below:

Anyone having the same problem?

Anyone having the same problem?

Are you sures this is because of the update and not your email client?

Not sure what Apple delivered in this update but suddenly my Spotlight searches are ninja-fast. As far as I am concerned this has taken them 9 releases to get right but better late than never. Hurrah!

They didn't do anything with spotlight. (Or that is what the specifics of the update said.) My guess is they reset the indexes. I do this once every 2-3 months and it makes things all fast like in spotlight.

Wow!

My iMac is literally twice as loud now. I always had to have it at near max levels to hear my iTunes songs properly. Now, I can scale it down to 50%.

Anyone else seeing this?

On my 17" Core Duo MacBook Pro the same, the internal speakers are really loud now, even at one dot in Volume I can her the "blink" sound clearly, before the update I haven't heard a beep at this volume.

How about the others? Headphones maybe? (will try it later at home)

just plugged in my nano and then the whole screen when black for over 20 mins... had to do a hard reset... wonder if it's caused by this update?

anyways, i'm glad that the eject button now functions as it's supposed to be. i'm also glad that shaftshifter, menu meters, etc. all work fine under 10.4.9.

10.2.8 was released on October 3, 2004, followed by the release of 10.3 on October 24 (21 days later).

10.3.9 was released April 15, 2005 followed by the release of 10.4 14 days later, on April 29.

Leopard must be close.

I beg to differ. I think it follows this pattern

10.2.8 was released on October 3, 2004, followed by the release of 10.3 just 21 days later.

10.3.9 was released April 15, 2005 followed by the release of 10.4 just 14 days later.

10.4.10 will be released on ?? followed by the release of 10.5 just 7 days later.

:D

EDIT: I see this follows/combines thomasp's remark that this pattern would mean a 10.4.10 must be on the horizon and berkleeboy210's post saying that it would be 7 days later.

Since installing 10.4.9 I have not been able to view my Gmail account - I just get a blank white screen (well, window) with the message "Done", when it obviously isn't.

I don't yet know whether it is a Google problem or an Apple problem or a me problem - any other experiences out there?

I am still having the issue and I think that it is related to Firefox 2 - no other sites are affected. Any ideas on a fix?

Fix iPhoto once for all

small updates like these to iPhoto are not welcome. iPhoto has lots of bugs.
I would like to see something like: "iPhoto now fully compatible with external hard drives, it won't eat up your photos or resize them automagically, no thumbnail errors, doesn't eat up too much of your disk space etc etc."

Could somebody with a UVC webcam please check and see if the new drivers allow Mercury to detect the cam without using 3rd party drivers like macam, etc. ?

Front-Row problem???

In Front-Row>Music>songs, I have noticed that my TV shows (ripped from DVD, not iTS purchases as I don't have any) are also listed. If I play them through songs only the sound plays, no video. The Shows are also listed correctly under Videos>TV Shows, and play fine. I have all my DVD rips in my iTunes library and have checked iTunes and nothing is out of place there.

No idea if this is a result of this update as I have never used the songs menu before. If anyone would who has a similar setup would like to check if they have the same result I would be interested to hear.

Well, there is a pattern all right.

The question is whether this pattern will continue for Tiger and Leopard. Apple doesn't have to keep to patterns if they don't see the need. If Leopard was ready after 10.4.5 they could have released it then, if it is not ready until over a year they'll probably release it after 10.4.12.

Personally, I don't expect Leopard until June so I won't rule out a final 10.4.10.

A pattern I very strongly believe in is that of the final update to the old OS. Not only does it make sense, Apple seems to think so as well. Apple tends to release a final update to the old OS just before or after the new OS is finished. Either 10.4.9 is that final one or there is a 10.4.10 on the horizon. Since I don't believe Leopard is due out any time soon, I think a 10.4.10 is not unlikely.

This has been happening well before the update. It's been happening on my computer well before 10.4.8. It's normal and I have identical results to you.

The reason this happens is because the files are also found under the Music folder where the entire iTunes library is stored.

I love the new eject key. Every time i wrote something i pressed the eject key...
Now it's much more comftable. (MBP)

Sorry, what bugs? My system is perfect after the update, as usual...and the Eject key thing is NOT a bug, just an adjustment in the eject timing...

By the way, I agree with the Spotlight comments...what was already good is simply great now!

I was not saying the eject thing was a bug. I was mentioning all the problems requiring sometimes complete re-installs of the operating system that people have been talking about. I haven't had any bugs myself...

But my point is that it looks somewhat like Apple changed a lot in this update. I was suggesting that perhaps there could be a bit of forward-compatibility for Leopard in it. Then again, if there were, the people who hack the OS core would have already told us...

For those of you having issues, i suggest clearing out ALL caches before each update and repair permissions. I've found this to make things go smoothly.

In other news, anyone notice this?. Its now Apple Inc. and no longer Apple computers and year has been upgraded to 07.
