They supposedly fixed the performance issues with the new iMacs. However Flash itself is entirely Adobe's problem ;)

I've noticed a significant performance improvement with flash since updating to 10.6.2 - My computer was using 100% processing power while a flash video was playing and then 75-80% after the video was over.

I'm very glad it's fixed.

So I lied, I figured out what it was.

I don't use Spotlight (please, don't flame, I'm not the only one who doesn't and I don't need to hear your reasons why you do and I'm stupid and whatnot) so I did actually remove the spotlight icon by modifying the Search.bundle in /System/Library/CoreServices. I reverted it back to how it should be, and all my icons are back.

Just wanted to mention this in case there's anybody else who had this issue.... give it a shot and good luck!

I have the same problem, and I also disabled spotlight by chmodding Search.bundle to 600. Resetting the permissions to 755 did not fix the problem though. How did you modify your Search.bundle originally and how did you revert it back to what it should be? Thanks for the info!

I'm also having this problem. All my icons are gone. My Search.bundle has the correct permissions after the install. I honestly forget how I disabled it in the first place. It'll too bad Apple won't let us disable services that we don't want without having to muck around in system files.

Well, my macbook seems to run smoother after installing the update (for now at least) - which is good, because before the update I found it preferable to work in Windows7 using parallels because Safari was unusable and I kept getting the stupid spinning beach ball at random intervals. Definitely seems better now - although it doesn't seem to have fixed a problem I've got with my CAPS Lock, but I can live without that for now.

Beare of this update: iWeb problem

I just updated this morning and got a terrible issue with iWeb: with certain blog themes (i.e. Gazette for example) the program crashed with a SFWordProcessing plugin error. The sad thing is that i made the page just a few minutes before upgrading, and right after i'm not able any more to work at the project.

And i must admit that things were not so bad with 10.6.1.... I regret updating.

It certainly gets in the way. One of my favourite improvements in SL is the ability to sort by kind in open/save dialogs. For the way in which so many of us still work with deep folder trees, especially for work, having all the folders listed in a row is just so convenient. And that's what stacks have lost. I would say it costs minutes over the space of a day - after I *sigh* most times I am reminded of it, I then have to scroll down in the list view stack, and repeat for however many levels I'm navigating. And then let's not forget time spent posting about it :).

I just sometimes find it annoying that most of the fixes listed in the OS updates don't mean much to me, but the flaws that are so visible to me remain unchecked. Mind you, for this one it could be worse, remember in 10.5.0 they took out the ability to even have navigable folders in the dock .

I was referring to his broken Dashboard widget ... I even highlighted it in his text.

So far so good here on a Santa Rosa MacBook. Upgraded using the combo updater. If anything, the CPU temperatures seems to have gone down.

Pity still no option to switch to the 10.5-style Exposé.

Well, I am just gonna take the first post because the rest of the complaints is pretty much subjective BS.

Cons.
No video as desktop function - DON'T KNOW WHAT THIS MEANS.
Quicktime options gone. - You don't need them, but if you want you can install a separate pref pane.
That damn beach ball. - NONE here.
Safari crashing at way too often. - Safari crashed only once in 2 months.
Damn beach ball again - NONE here.
Safari taking longer to load pages. - WRONG.
Beach ball again - NONE here.
Trash and the securely delete function. What exactly was wrong with 'empty trash' then disk utility erase function? - BS.
IDVD, taking 30 to 40% longer to burn disk. (this one really takes the !!!!) - DON'T USE IT.
Opening applications takes longer. Boring!!!!! - WRONG.
Beach ball yet again - NONE here.
Systems hangs a lot more. There's that flaming beach ball again - NONE here.

Net result? ZERO problems.

Well if it doesn't happen for you then the problems that others are having must be non-existent then. Thanks for debunking all of our problems.

Oh wait - Safari beach balled for 10 seconds before I could enter text into the text box. Must not have happened though if YOU aren't experiencing any issues.

Well it barely works in 10.6.1. Super slow for things like spaces, seems like it has not been optimized. Hopefully that has changed in 10.6.2. Anyone seem some impovement?
It did seem like an odd rumor that they would remove support for machines only a couple years old.

I'm pretty sure my MacBook has a GMA950 card in, works fine on 1Gb of RAM.

It makes you wonder how somebody with the word lawyer in their handle could demonstrate such lack of intelligence in one post.

no, its the same for me.

The battery life seems better on my unibody, it's been running for about 5 hours now (granted I've not been working on it all of that time) and it's still saying it's got about 50 minutes left.

Works..

Sofar, nothing bad has happened here.

I think its important some people post these replies too, i know people who have no issues are less likely to post anything at all, but there seem to be so many problem posts around, and a number of "I'm going to be cautious and not upgrade!"..

I've never been cautious with osX updates, and the only time it bit me in the ass was with the original Leopard blue screen glitch. This time has been no exception. I dont think I'm unusually lucky, I just think this is "normal" experience based on all the people I know anyway..

I'd rather wing it (with a backup) than wait on other people's experiences, I mean, *I* never seem to get any of the glitches people mention, and it's not like i don't run a hell of a lot of software.

Boot does seem considerably smoother in 6.2, i have no idea why that would be.

For those of you with the menu bar icon problem that came with disabling spotlight, all you need to do is rename Search.bundle in /System/Library/CoreServices to something else and then killall SystemUIServer. I also posted this on a mac support discussion about the problem.

People who had slowdowns with spaces have resolved the problem? Because I still have slowndowns and graphic glitch.

Nope. Look here:

And no matter how many times people here correct you - you still keep posting that crap over and over again.

Message to moderators: could we please assemble a team of assassins so that idiots who ask stupid questions over and over again are handled with the utmost efficiency? they're clogging up the forum with useless banter than adds nothing to the conversation.

No problems with 10.6.2

Just installed the update on my Core 2 Duo 2.66 GHz 2 GB RAM iMac, and it was a 499.9 GB download, even though I was already using 10.6.1.

The only issue I encountered after re-boot was my Apple Mail app which I have set to log in at start up was the old 4.1 version, so I needed to change it in System Prefs to 4.2.

All else seems fine, but I do notice my name now appearing up in the top corner of the screen. I don't need to be reminded who I am. I guess 10.6.2 realizes I'm getting older, though, and is trying to help. :p

saving pdfs crashes preview

Anyone else noticing that preview is very unstable or is it just me? Not sure if this is a new 10.6.2 change or if preview has always been like this because I only upgraded recently and I'm still testing things out.

I'd say within the past evening and this morning I've managed to get 3 crashes when trying to save pdfs after annotating them in preview. I have Papers installed (pdf organizer) which I was using at the time. Not sure if that has anything to do with it.

Anyone know of a fix?

EDIT:
Forgot to mention this is a completely fresh install that I've only just begun to start installing my apps on.

Mine was also a whooping 500 mB download on a 2 month old 13" MBP that was 10.6.1 hmmmm. Everything is fine though, oh well... Is your name there because you have fast user switching turned on? If so you can have it not show your name...
