Installed the Combo update. But on my Mac, booting into a 64-Bit operating system kernel still is the domain of Windows and Linux. That machine still has a couple of months of Apple Care left, which means it's not even three years old, but Apple already does not fully support it anymore. A 64-Bit workstation that does not even run on a 64-Bit kernel of its very own operating system. Now that would be good for a laugh if it wasn't so sad.

Steve Jobs can no longer sell me any "awesome, magical, amazing" new toys.
Crap, <string>arch=x86_64</string> in com.apple.Boot.plist no longer works for enabling 64bit for my MBP.

Anybody have any clue on this?
My iMac is still booting into a 64-bit kernel...

Update went fine.

One thing, though: the Colour profile for OS X was reset. I can't remember what I had it on - ColorMatch or Generic RGB or Adobe RGB 1998.

Which profile is best (or intended) for Snow Leopard?

Adobe RGB, although the iMac original is also fine and with a seemingly colder profile.

I'm glad that this update is finally out! I was waiting for this update to perform an erase and install and Install Snow Leopard.

Same thing happened to me on all 4 machines I updated.

I tend to stick with the sRGB color profile since I do a lot of web work.

Yup yup.

I think "Generic RGB" seems to be good all 'round for my OS X desktop.

At least, the colours look right without looking washed out.

Color profile reset, printing not fixed :(

My update also reset my color profile (I think, it looked different), so I just recalibrated (I have a Spyder3pro). All is good now.

No other problems to report other than my 5 minute-to-print HP Laserjet 3550cn printer issue still exists. I have given up on SL and it's printing problems.. how could they break it so bad?

So far so good, even fixed my crash on close in Logic 8.02(grain of salt only testing further).Seems like the wait was worth it.

Notes on my update:
Seems fine.
It did revert back to a default screen color calibration.

Problems that still exist (been there since 10.6.0)

In iCal when you perform the goto date and then type in the date and hit enter the enter command is not recorded but the mouse needs to click on the OK button.

In iCal when you search for something then you change it’s repeating pattern you need to delete your search terms and research for it.

I have a list of first names in Pages. I make a PDF using the built in print to PDF feature then open the PDF and select the list (each one separated by a return) and copy and paste into a spreadsheet. The returns are missing and seems to pick a predetermined length per cell before it wraps to a cell lower. This was fine in 10.5 but not now in 10.6.

When opening a folder from a stack by Command Clicking on it the window size and location isn’t memorized from the last time but rather defaults to another window size and location.

Some that I can't verify very easily so I post this to see if someone else is having it still (I can't recreate it yet.)

Sometimes the trash will look empty even though there are things in it and the option to empty it is grayed out from the dock icon but the finder menu will still work.

Mail will be open but the Quit Mail menu will be greyed out. Other methods of quitting still work.

I had 9 other listed bugs that are fixed. So a good update in my opinion.

And yes I have submitted and am resubmitting these lingering bugs to Apple at:
http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html

Provided your monitor is calibrated right to begin with, best choices are among the following:

Adobe RGB 1998
Apple RGB
ColorMatch RGB
Generic RGB

All have subtle variations. I find that my custom monitor profile (SyncMaster) isn't that great. Too washed out. Now, if I stick with this display-specific profile, I assume I'm left with calibrating the display itself. Which isn't a problem, but I find that if I leave it the way it is (it purportedly has excellent default settings) and just adjust the brightness, it's a lot easier to play with OS X colour profiles instead. Besides, the calibration exercise in the display control panel seems to gel with what I've got.

I don't do any real Pro photo work so I'm left with having to eyeball it.

I find that Apple RGB, Generic RGB, and ColorMatch RGB provide the nicest-looking colours. The hues are nice and deep without being too dark.

Anyone got any problems with hot spot corners in Expose since upgrading to 10.6.3?

I move my cursor into the top left hand corner and I don't see all of the windows that I have open. Yet if I move my cursor to the right I see my desktop.

I've checked the settings in System Preferences and it's exactly how it was when I set it up last year.

Cheers.

All fine here.

So are your settings not working or have your settings been reset?

If you have a Firewire port of your machine and have access to another machine running SL.....you can boot yours into Target Disk Mode and re-apply the Combo update.

I really wish Apple would come up with a way to burn the Combo to a disk so it could be installed via Safe Mode for times like yours.

I dont know whats going with my computer..In safe mode, If I click "about me" it displays that have 10.6.3, the new update, for some reason when i restart it, it just continues to go to that kernel panic screen. I think I'm going to have to do a "archive and install" i dont know.

Did it

So far:

- it seems snappy, but it takes a lot to refill the caches...
- battery life is a bit improved, now the battery time indicator is quite "dynamic"
- Wireless network (under 801.11n) sensitiveness is getting worst than before, not so good.
- display's gamma restored as the wallpaper.
- still some crappy stuff in Console (I/O throttle spawn in 10sec...)
- Memory is a bit better managed (with 8Gb I can now feel the difference)
- Parallels Flies!
- Randomic strange behavior while sleeping/waking up... (display graphic fuzzle!)

mbp17 2.8ghz, 8gb ram, 7200rpm

So I installed the update, then booted up Call of Duty 4 on my Mac Pro (w/ Radeon 4870). On 10.6.2 I was running with everything maxed out and it ran very smooth! Now with 10.6.3 with my previous settings it runs SOOOO slow! I have to drop down the resolution by half, remove anti-aliasing, and all the other features just to be able to play it.

What gives?!??!!?!?!?

I have no issues to report here with CoD4 on my iMac and NVIDIA 8800GS, and haven't noticed any performance problems compared to 10.6.2...1920x1200, all maxed out and the same average 30/40 fps during a game session.

All fine here.

So are your settings not working or have your settings been reset?

My settings are exactly how they are when I first set up the hot spots many months ago. I move the cursor to the top left hand corner and the screen dims, but it doesn't show any of the windows open. E.G. at the moment I have Finder, Mail, iTunes and Safari open. The only way I can see that those are open is to click on the button for a few seconds and see the open windows, e.g. the open windows in Safari.

Would you like to enlighten us what generation is your Mac Pro?

I think the Mac Pro you have only has a 32bit EFI ROM. So Apple is actually unable to give you 64-bit drivers period.

But x64 versions of Linux and Windows run fine? Methinks it's "Apple won't", not "Apple can't".

Not without an EFI upgrade, but that could break your machine completely (like any BIOS upgrade)

"Any BIOS upgrade" can break your machine? You must be buying hardware from a company that ships stuff without testing. ;)

I upgrade the BIOS in my Dells, HPs, Asus, IBMs and other systems regularly, and have yet to have a system "break completely". About 4 years ago I had a Proliant upgrade cause some minor issues - but that was solved by rebooting and choosing the "use previous BIOS" option. (HP puts two banks of NVRAM into the system. An upgrade replaces the "old" version, then marks that bank as "current". A BIOS setup option lets you choose the "current" bank or the "backup" bank.)

Big thumbs up from me

Get significantly better results on xbench. especially in OpenGL test!

edit: Also this strange problem i had where my processor was shown to be an intel core duo rather than an intel core "2" duo has been fixed

Yes but the 64-bitness also causes problems or in the case of Linux, Xorg doesnt even start. Don't blame Apple for the incompetence of Intel. If you actually looked at those links you would know that these problems exist. I even know a student that has this problem with his old HP.

With any software ever, there is a chance of random error. I've had BIOS upgrades fail from ASUS, Gigabyte, Foxconn, MSI you name it. I had a case where an Asus update failed so badly, I had to hotswap it, erase it by force and reflash it.

'Dual Bios' (As gigabyte calls it) is a relatively new feature and yet to be implemented standardly accross new motherboards.

Oooo, it has wireless connectivity fixes.

Maybe this will sort out my dog-slow internet over wireless, seeing as absolutely nothing else can.

Flash Improved???

Could it be that this update fixed the flash problems?
FLASH HAS BEEN COMPLETELY UNUSABLE FOR ME in FF and Safari.
But post-Update flash content in Safari is really working smoothly.

Has anyone else noticed drastic performance improvement.
