Is APFS optional when upgrading to Mojave? I don't have full SSD (Fusion Drive in iMac) and I am a conservative sort when it comes to my data. I would like to put off APFS until I swap out the spinning rust.

Yeah that’s why I said understand the need to discontinue support at a certain time. Did you not read that?
[doublepost=1537828810][/doublepost]
Well, I think anyone who follows best practices wouldn’t suggest using an unsupported OS if they care at all about security don’t you?

Yes, and I wrote "kidding". Did you not read that!?

Install crashed, unable to use network etc. Apple Support set me up with Genius Bar Thursday.
First time ever had macOS update fail. (July 2018 iMac 27, 4k etc). Bluetooth flaky, USB disks
Not visible. Nvram, smc reset, tried reinstall several times.....

I have an external 30" Cinema Display and 27" Thunderbolt Display hooked to my 15" Retina MBP. If the fonts are not going to look good on my external displays, who makes large external Retina displays? I need my 3 screens for the development work I do.

There may be an issue with OWC Ram, at least with my OWC Ram. Installation onto my 2017 27" 5K iMac stoped with an error message that Mojave could not be installed on my computer. The hardware diagnostic showed no issues. I removed the OWC Ram, tried again and Mojave did install. Reinstalled the ram and Mojave still works . I had one kernel panic but other than that all seems well.

Apple today released the newest version of its operating system for Macs, macOS Mojave, to the public. macOS Mojave is a free download that's available today for anyone who has a compatible Mac, and it comes after 11 rounds of betas.

macOS Mojave can be downloaded from the Mac App Store, with a direct link to the download available here.

macOS Mojave is a significant update to macOS, introducing a new systemwide Dark Mode, with Mojave users able to choose between a light theme or the new dark theme, which changes the color of the dock, menu bar, apps, and other elements.

Dark Mode is accompanied by Dynamic Desktops, aka wallpapers that subtly change throughout the day to mimic the progress of the sun across the sky outside.

In the afternoon, for example, the lighting of the Mojave Desert wallpaper is at its peak brightness and the image of the desert is depicted as it would be if you visited it in the daytime with well-lit sand dunes and a bright blue sky.

At night, the sky in the wallpaper shifts to darker blue to reflect that it's now evening. The shift between daytime and nighttime happens gradually over the course of the day, so you'll see subtle changes each time you look at your Mac's display. It's a neat new feature that can be enabled in the Desktop & Screensaver section of preferences.

macOS Mojave also includes Stacks, a new desktop organization system that keeps desktop files neat and organized to cut down on clutter. The Finder window has been enhanced with a new Gallery View for previewing larger versions of photos and documents, a Sidebar for easier navigation, a revamped Quick Look option for quick document editing, and Quick Actions, so you can do more in the Finder window than ever before.

Screenshots that you take on the Mac can now be edited using built-in Markup tools and a new management options that also allow for easy screen recording. Continuity camera, a useful new feature, allows you to import photos and document scans directly from an iPhone or iPad to the Mac.

The Apple News, Stocks, Home, and Voice Memos apps have been ported from iOS to macOS as part of a multiyear project Apple is working on to make it easier to bring iOS apps to Macs, and Apple has introduced several new privacy protections to keep your data safer than ever.

Apple is also making it harder for websites to track you with a range of new Safari tools, and it's also easier to make and store secure, hard-to-guess passwords for each and every website.

Apple has added an entirely revamped Mac App Store to macOS Mojave that makes it easier to discover apps with a featured section and specific categories for games, creative apps, productivity apps, apps for developers, and more.

macOS Mojave was initially supposed to include a Group FaceTime feature that includes support for chatting with up to 32 people at one time, but it was removed in the macOS Mojave beta and will be introduced in a future Mojave update.

macOS Mojave drops support for many older Macs compared to macOS High Sierra and it is compatible primarily with machines manufactured in 2012 or later. A full list of Macs that can run Mojave is below:

[*]MacBook (Early 2015 or newer)
[*]MacBook Air (Mid 2012 or newer)
[*]MacBook Pro (Mid 2012 or newer)
[*]Mac mini (Late 2012 or newer)
[*]iMac (Late 2012 or newer)
[*]iMac Pro (2017)
[*]Mac Pro (Late 2013, plus mid 2010 and mid 2012 models with recommended Metal-capable GPU)

It sure is. I prefer the form factor of my older MBP and there is nothing slow about it for most common tasks.

Though I completely understand the need to cut off support at some point, it just seems like a waste of perfectly usable hardware.

You can't force it to install without jumping through hoops?

Dark Mode theme: Not impressed. Dark Mode is just black; why couldn't we have had a method to select some other shade, dark grey, pewter, silver, gold...anything but basic black. I switched back to Light Mode after 30 seconds.

Dynamic Desktop: Worthless unless one uses the one of the two supplied backgrounds. I'm a professional photographer—my stable of images for the desktop background is far superior to what Apple gave us.

Stacks: Not useful as I do not use my desktop as a smorgasbord of icons representing documents. No icons on my desktop save for 12 G-Tech Thunderbolt drives, Time Machine, and the Broncos Desksite.

Apple News: No thanks, I keep Firefox pinned with the websites of the Washington Post, the New York Times, and the Los Angeles Times.

Installation: Installation required over 90 minutes on my MacPro with a 4TB SSD and 128GB RAM. (Yep, there's a few aftermarket improvements from OWC.) Got a little worrisome for awhile as my triple LG 34" curved monitors went grey, but I simply waited it out. No worries.

It's not all a disappointment. I see a pretty good performance improvement in Adobe Photoshop and Photoshop Lightroom on my MacPro, and that's worth the admission. However, IMHO Mojave doesn't live up to the hype.

I have just updated my iMac as well as two MacBook Pros and I did not have a single issue. Downloaded the upgrade file on the iMac and Content Caching ensured the two MacBook Pros received the same update over the network. I then ran the procedure on all three devices at the same time. In all it took less than an hour and I was done. Dark Mode looks fantastic.

There may be an issue with OWC Ram, at least with my OWC Ram. Installation onto my 2017 27" 5K iMac stoped with an error message that Mojave could not be installed on my computer. [doublepost=1537841891][/doublepost]I have 128GB of OWC RAM in my MacPro, and I didn't get any errors. The installation simply took over 90 minutes, which I've read is more than double the time. Probably the RAM, as I've seen memory cleaners take a lot more time after the upgrade.

Install went smoother and faster than recent releases which is good. Too bad it comes with new bugs too... Photos no longer lets you hit the space bar to zoom in on an image... I use that all the time and I just get the error tone now when I try it. Still works on desktop, but not in Photos.

So this dark mode is huge improvement in system performance, right?...

Well then, who gives a ****.
[doublepost=1537842476][/doublepost]Hear! Hear! Dark Mode is a complete waste of space. Used it for less than 30 seconds. Eck!
[doublepost=1537842578][/doublepost]
CocoaTech is working hard to create a Dark mode to Path Finder 8. Update coming by the end of the month. We just released version 8 and a minor update to work with Dark Mode. The complete Mojave update coming soon. Here is a coupon code to thank you for your patience! FIVEOFF
[doublepost=1537842646][/doublepost]Please don't waste your time. Dark Mode sucks. Just fix your useless 'Find' function which does not tell the user where the heck their files or folders are located!

I'm hoping that Majave will be a solid macOS like Tiger, Snow Leopard, Mt Lion, El Capitan and Sierra that will work with older software so I can remain on it for many years as they phase out x86 support and move to an A12 chipset.

Well, for the ppl not impressed with Mojave features like the screen capture UI, quick look in Finder, Dark Mode, etc... they are like everything else, like, the one year roll out of MacOS... just tiny fixes/improvements to basic elements of MacOS.

I am just glad my cMP 5,1 with RX 460 works and seems to work fine as before (10.13.6). Haven't done anything heavy, though. But, I see the little RX 460 being more active under iStat when web browsing. Meaning, it's doing some lifting in everyday computer tasks.

Every time I check for an update for adobe flash player an uninstaller shows up in the dock. I use principally the chrome browser.....is adobe flash player incompatible with Mojave?

So if you have a MacBook Air or non retina iMac that are still being sold, the fonts will look like crap? Is Apple seriously releasing software that will make your fonts look like crap? Then this upgrade should be skipped. How many people will not realize this and suddenly after reboot, the screen fonts are terrible. Laughable.

you will not notice any change (from High Sierra to Mojave) in yr fonts on yr MacBook Air.

Settings/General Turn off "Use font smoothing when available" may be better or not, in some cases.

One year of software development, and the headlining feature is "dark mode". A dark, high contrast desktop. I got more features when I upgraded from Windows 98 to Windows Millennium.

It's getting incredibly obvious that Apple no longer gives a rip about macs. Gotta go through the motions by releasing a new OS every year. Man, they are regretting that about right now.

This seems like a really unusual issue. I’d be curious to know the follow-up.

I use a 28” Samsung 4K, and the fonts look great, I think. The only downside to the monitors is that it doesn’t come with built-in speakers. ‍♂️

The tone of dark mode changes depending on background color and accent choice.

Headlining feature is preview of porting iOS apps to macOS.
