Oh, you mean graphite renders everything in flat black, but selecting another allows it to change depending on the background?

Exactly. Try changing desktop background to a red color, then switch from graphite to another accent color, and look at a Finder window.

Hmmm this would actually make the shades of gray tinted in a way I should like more. I may eventually try and stay in Dark Mode after all. For me seems to be ok the Underwater desktop with the green accent.

That's actually kinda cool, and makes dark mode more acceptable. I don't think I saw that demoed by Apple?

I don't know about the demo anymore. At my age I look at the demos once and when it's finished it's gone from my gray matter, time to move on to work.
Switched to Ink Cloud desktop and green accent, I like it more blueish. But I may change idea soon.
[doublepost=1537870076][/doublepost]I actually just discovered that, if you have a desktop picture with different colors (i.e. not plain color) Dark Mode tints differently as you move a window around. Try it with the System Preference window and the Ink Cloud desktop. If you move it to the center of the screen it becomes more greenish, if you drag it to the corners of the screen it becomes more neutral.
[doublepost=1537870672][/doublepost]OK, got it. Google for "mojave desktop tinting".

Seems to be running smoothly. Only complaint is font and zoom. Loved the font in Safari now it's just not right. Too small, then too big. Zoom seems off too. Normal is too small, one Command + up is too big. Even the zoom in preferences doesn't get it just right.

Wish we had some font options in Safari. Did I miss this??

this is the reason why my MB Air and Mini will stay on HS for now

I really was looking forward to Mojave, but this does not seem to be worth it

Upgraded a Mac Pro 2013 with an Apple Thunderbolt Cinema Display.
(Apple current desktop + most recent monitor)

It looks like hot garbage. It's almost like reverting to OS X 10.4, all fonts are blurry/grainy, and sticks out even worse in dark mode.

WTF were they thinking in Cupertino?

Tim Cook, nice watch, but might want to consider new glasses next.
Also thanks for the post-Steve assist, but there's the door, your retirement awaits.

Now can we get someone real at Apple to fix the damn font engine?

I tried dark mode, and personally dislike the chosen gray tones. It feels like screen for undertakers. Quite depressing.

IMHO Apple is trying to push retina technology or probably thinks most people should have moved to a 4K+ display by now...
Found that setting in a reddit thread. Luckily we have it and it just works.
[doublepost=1537868453][/doublepost]

It does. Only if you choose Graphite accent color it stays neutral.

The grays are a problem, Apple kinda blew it on dark mode.

If you go to System Prefs > Accessibility then slide the Display Contrast about 3/4 of the way, to the right from Normal towards the first tick mark.

Unfortunately this setting borks the contrast of everything on screen, but you can see a much better version of what dark mode could have been.

If not why change the build number!
IIRC well enough, before the release was the same as the GM number, can't recall when the change happend, probably 1-2 years ago.
Sadly it's rather hard to verify, I would need to download both last full beta and this release, then compare them.
OK. So it sounds like you were just guessing which is fine. The reason it gets a new build number regardless of nothing changing is due to what’s called a build schedule. A specific daily build becomes the release vehicle. You would never fix minor issues in the release build as that’s what beta 1 of 10.14.1 is for.

How do you remove the "install macos mojave" file? I moved it from my apps folder to trash, but it won't let me empty it out of the trash?

I discovered the same thing – I don't like Dark Mode as much as I thought I would, but without it the menu becomes white(ish) and I dislike that even more. So I guess it's another "take it or leave it" from Apple.

Fonts are rendered differently on retina screens as well. I use Chrome, and it's like all the text became slightly thinner. Oddly enough when I was installing Mojito the laptop was connected to a non-retina 1440p display, and that looked good. It's the Macbook screen that's now slightly less legible.

they should using soft tone like google chrome in osx. lighter

I have a early 2011 13" MBP (upgraded to 8 GB RAM and with a SSD). Although Apple claims this Mac won't be supported by Mac OS Mojave, i still have the option in the App Store to download the update. What will happen if i load it?

installation take 1 hour + on ssd external (imac 2017)and weird to.. blank screen somemore.. i think you shouldn't unless got extra egpu in hand.

Have tried the install twice so far on diff SSD drives. Both times it totally erased the boot drive and any other connected SSD drives. Seems a major issue to me...

Updated on my 2012 MBA with no issues, but had issues on my 2017 iMac and now have to do a fresh install from recovery page. Process looks like it will take a while, so I will have to just let it run while I go to bed and continue tomorrow after I return from work.

Ah well, I guess my luck has to run out at one point or another...

Update - restore process went faster than expected and all my files seem to be intact. Guess I dodged a bullet there.

Good night all. There went my whole evening but all’s well that ends well, I suppose.

My mini review (on a 2017 non TB MBP 8GB 256GB):
  • This feels like a Snow Leopard year where the focus is on power user features and stability. I'm impressed. My machine feels faster than ever.
  • Like Snow Leopard, it feels like the end of the era (well, Snow Leopard felt like that retrospectively). Next release will surely bring a far greater UX mesh with iOS (on iPad) and marzipan/swift will be the de-facto way to deliver apps to the Mac. I think that we can also expect Mail, Notes etc. to come over from the iPad/iOS too. Big big changes are ahead. But for the moment, let's enjoy one of the best versions of 'classic' macOS/OS X
  • Metal 2 graphics acceleration is fast! Scrolling on Safari is insanely quick now. Animated dialog boxes sweep in and out without any juddering, like they used to on HS. Kudos to the teams behind this.
  • Dark mode is great, but it's jarring using apps that don't support it and the web which is mostly black text on huge fields on white. Fingers crossed that Apple and others will get a CSS extension that allows for style sheets to switch on OSs that declare that they're using a dark mode.
  • News and the other iOS ported apps are... OK. The text seems to be 1/4 smaller than it should be, which looks odd. Very much seems like a proof of concept (which it is really) and adds an unfinished feel to an OS which otherwise feels very polished. Hoping that in March 2019, we see an interim release of these apps which updates them. Marzipan by then should be near for public (well dev) consumption
  • Talking of which, the new App Store looks great and I suspect it's more of a preview of how Marzipan apps on the Mac will be expected to look than News etc.
  • Haven't had a chance to try out stacks or any of the quick actions. I'll leave that to those who use their Macs professionally.
  • To sum up - this feels like a great release so far, with the emphasis on speed. My Mac really flies now. It feels like the foundations for big big changes coming next year - and in a year's time, I hope to be using many apps from the ported over software library of iOS/iPad along with the power of the Mac's Finder. Truly the best of all worlds.

Last Mojave beta was 18A389 (not labelled beta, though) on 11th Sept.
No downloads since of Mojave, so is the 10.14 I have the same as the one issued just recently?
Or, being a beta tester, do I wait for the first of the updates?

What Mac are you on? I have a Mac Pro with a 27 inch 1440p and 24 inch 16:10 screen and I'd be very interested in knowing how the text looks before taking the plunge.

As I said in next post after that, it looks fine on external monitor, and I think it is gonna look fine on yours.

Try what hybra said, in post 369. I think it works.

That would really suck. Marzipan apps are laughably bad at the moment. They neither look nor work like well-behaved Mac apps at all. Didn't like it when Microsoft brought mobile apps to the Desktop, don't like it anymore now that Apple is doing it.

Well I am impressed with many of the features of Mojave on my main machines (15 inch late 2013 MacBook Pro, and my 12 inch late 2015 12 inch MacBook. Install was good and I love some of the features (stacks, camera, having a news app like on my iPad, ect).

However my wife’s identical 12 inch late 2015 did not l Ike the install — it went normally but when I rebooted to proceed I got the internet not working error with no WiFi. I followed many suggestions online, and from forums and tried resetting the PRAM and SMC not working and trying to look at the network settings to toggle the WiFi. — But no WiFi showing in that either. And finder was very bad, flaky with too many beach balls colors of death on any app I tired to use, even safari was failing and it took long time to force quit and suc. Obviously some corruption — PLIST suggested by some.

The only way to proceed if I wanted appeared to be a clean install and still no guarantee there either. But my wife has some specialized work scheduling sites and such that means I would then have to install things from scratch and then put in all the passwords and such. Was not worth it — she never likes me updating so I restored to the latest High Sierra and she is back in action. Not going to bother upgrading her again leaving it where it is. - she uses email, photos and also her work accounts in safari and thats it — spends more time on iphone and ipad so not worth the hassle. If I one day find another used 12 inch like both we have (mine was fine, hers was not) maybe will add it and plays with a clean or reiinstall one day but for now leaving well enough alone.

Let’s judge Apple when they’ve shown us what they’re up to at WWDC 19.

I suspect that the final Marzipan apps will look more like the new App Store app (even though it’s not an early marzipan app) than the real marzipan apps that we’ve got right now.

Execute in Terminal:

defaults write -g CGFontRenderingFontSmoothingDisabled -bool NO

then logoff and re-logon.

Make sure you also enable "Font Smoothing" (last setting in System Preferences / General)
This doesn't fix the missing subpixel antialiasing. It's gone from Mojave.

Apple didn't really launch a dark mode that you can't automatically activate at night, right? Someone tell me where to find the setting because surely they didn't expect me to enable and disable it manually.

Agreed I think it’s a shame. I’m missing this feature already.

Given that the Mac knows when to turn on night shift (and now dynamic desktop) I’d had expected an option for this with a banner counting down the change (... 5, 4, 3 etc seconds).

Maybe we’ll get this in March 2019.
