Tried twice now to update a 2019 16" MacBook Pro from latest Big Sur.

I can't stand how unreliable Apple software updates have become on the Mac. It used to be that an OS update would go perfectly 99% of the time. These days it is more like 50/50. This decline in quality is why you can't hire/promote people based on factors other than actual qualification.

Hello

Big Sur 11.6.1 = Big Sur updates no longer include Safari Updates, they are a now a separate install.

Can someone please let me know the build number of Safari 15.1 for macOS Big Sur
And the version number AND build number of Safari for macOS Monterey?

Thanks
Camelia

If I'm getting a new MBP in a couple weeks, should I avoid this upgrade to ensure it's behind the new comp? I don't want to be in a situation where I need to upgrade the new MBP to make sure it is at pace or ahead of my current computer when transferring my data.

Edit: or conversely, is it recommended that I DO upgrade to ensure things go as smoothly as possible?
It doesn't matter, when you try to copy over your backup to your new MBP, Mac OS will tell you if one system needs to be updated before backup restore. I personally would update my old system to the latest Mac OS version since it will at least be Monterey to Monterey restore.

and so 30 minutes...

I got the two minutes remaining also so finally quit the installer and putting 11.6.1 after reading all the pages. Still not sure if it' compulsory before upgrading to Monterey ...
Anyway I have the installer now and will try again tomorrow morning. It's late now and i'm kind of sleepy ;-))) Five  minutes to go on Big Sur , it's taking longer than downloading Monterey ..

Not available on the planet Pluto yet (yeah, you got that right, it's a planet for all you deniers).

Obligatory Kid's Learning Tube video (and probably by the time you see this, Monterey will be available on Pluto):

My kids loved this channel, as they go over everything. Funnily enough, they've even gone over Monterey... Bay, that is.

Anyway, I'm wanting to download this to use as a USB install stick for the Mac I'm going to purchase when (the Macs version of Monterey on the Macs being shipped isn't the same build as what was released), but I don't want to wait until it gets in to have to redownload it. I'm currently on Sierra with my mid-2011 13" MBA. If I download it, does anyone know if I'd be getting the Intel version or the Silicon version?

BL.

You don’t need 11.6.1 to install 12.

I really don't see a reason to leave 10.15.7. Everything on the "what's new" page is gimmicky feature-bloat for built in apps I've never used.

I'll update to the latest macOS when they force me to, like if I replace my 2019 16" MBP with one of the new ones. Also, it looks like I'm no longer able to get the newest FCP X or pages/numbers/keynote versions

When you download (and before doing the installation) there will be a “Install macOS Monterey” app in your Applications folder. After installation it removes that file, so you need to put a copy elsewhere to save it.
Thanks, DocMultimedia. I should have thought to look there. I was looking in the Library folder making this too complicated. It seems I forgot the KISS principle.

I was thinking maybe the installer you downloaded is corrupted, and you need to redownload it. That happened on one earlier beta for me.

Did it ask you for owner permission to proceed (admin passcode)

alternative is to open terminal and type
sudo softwareupdate -i -a -R
enter passcode
No, I think it was it couldn't connect to the servers to validate the installation, I tried 3-4 more times and it finally upgraded.

Messages crashes on launch. 'Tried to reinstall Big Sur, will not let me. Stuck. Otherwise seems ok on my MacBook Pro.

DO NOT use the IPSW file of this build to restore your M1 Mac mini in DFU mode. The process will fail. Learned that the hard way, had to flash computer back to 11.6 and then do the usual upgrade.

Heads up that both RC1 and RC2 has caused overnight kernel panics on my 2020 iMac, something that's basically never happened before (and I've run every beta)

So this has been just as disastrous as Big Sur. First it failed to install due to a Gatekeeper error, so I left it downloading for the night, hoping that it would be finished by morning.

Nope. It had held after only downloading 4 GB. I managed to get it to resume and then it got stuck on 12.13 GB (the full size), and after about half an hour it said there were "no eligible packages to install". So now I'm trying for about the 5th time. I wouldn't mind as much if the connection to the servers where Monterey is being hosted weren't so damn slow. It's almost like the connection is being throttled at less than 10 MB/s down.

I'd never had any problems installing a macOS update in all my years as a Mac user update prior to Big Sur. Whereas recently I've been having consistent problems installing Apple software updates (iPadOS 15.0.1, 15.0.2, Big Sur, and now Monterey too). Apple software updates have become as unreliable as Windows used to be, where you'd have to download the same update multiple times and it would still just randomly fail for no apparent reason. Ironically I've had zero issues with Windows 11, and all the problems with Apple software.
