How does Amazon get it so cheap?
They didn't get it cheap. They're selling off their old stock of the "old version." You can buy the "updated 2009 version," which is still nothing more than a number, for $90.49 right now if you really want the most current number, but it's going to be no different functionality wise. It's just a serial number. If you've wanted MM, this is the time to buy, apparently. I happened to stumble into it at the right time.

What about the crappy and pointless weather and stock apps. With 3.0, I expected them to at least update those, like how they managed to save the Caculator app, but nope, they're just lepers.

I use the weather app regularly.

Why would the stock app be pointless??

Why would either of these need updating?

It is OK but it still needs work. From my 5 minutes of playing

1) It is an Apple app, so why can't it just get the MobileMe account details from the MobileMe account setup on the device (of course prompt to select one if there is multiple or enter the details if there aren't any)
2) What about people without MobileMe accounts, you don't need one to access other people's public folders but you can't get to the public folders tab in this app unless you have one.
3) Sharing is nice, but needs work. Absolutely no control over expiration time or password, and you can only email the link to someone, not copy it to the clipboard as it doesn't even appear in the email editor that pops up
4) Could just be my phone playing up but when you bring up the mail pane for sharing if you click the (+) button to browse your contacts and then press the < Groups button in the top left you get an empty window

yes, this is what i'm confused about. i thought this app was too allow the iphone to mount as a drive. i could have sworn when it was announced that they said you wouldn't necessarily have to have a mobileme subscription. just downloaded it, but i'm going to give it 1 star for "unable to use" and "false advertising" boo.

Huh?

The application's name is MobileMe iDisk.

The description on the iTunes store:

"With MobileMe iDisk, you can view and nshare the files on your iDisk right from your iPhone or iPod touch.

Log in with your MobileMe username and password and you'll see a list of folders and files...

Note: If you are not a MobileMe member, ou can learn more about MobileMe and sign up for the free 60-day trial at http://www.apple.com/mobileme"

You're going to go and give it a poor ranking because you misunderstood the requirements? Please tell me you're not actually putting that ranking on the App Store.

I loaded it onto my iPhone 3GS I get this message

NEWS FLASH: THIS JUST IN!!

Apple can apparently please some of the people some of the time but have been unable as of yet to solve the age old conundrum of pleasing all of the people all of the time.

I see stock prices plummeting.

Incorrect!
I bought mine straight from Amazon.
Check it and see before posting non-truths.

I just want to back this up. I bought this exact version Saturday and it was delivered yesterday, FROM AMAZON, BY UPS, not a third-party reseller. There is no scam here - Amazon is selling it, shipping it, etc. It's only if you go into the "used and new" section that you have to watch what you're buying. Even then, you're likely to buy the real deal as long as the seller has good feedback.

That's what I don't understand. Why is there an 'old version' of a serial number? Why is the "old" one cheaper? None of it makes sense to me.

If Amazon just gets it that cheaply, ok, but your post indicates that's NOT what's happening. It sounds like they just save you 10% on MobileMe in general and 50% on old versions. Which is confusing since it's the same as the new one!

The stock app was updated and is a great feature if you are not a stock broker. The weather app doesn't need an update unless you want it to be more like the premium apps, and in that case less Apple like. But again, unless you have specific need for that, which a majority of people do not (note: I do, I have almost every weather app in the store to supplement all the weather apps on my computers—for work) it answers the most basic of questions, "What is the weather this afternoon/tonight/tomorrow?"

Wow, gotta disagree with you there. Those are probably the two apps I use the most. And for 3.0 they made the Stocks app a LOT better, with rotating graphs and news stories any everything. I think those are two of the best apps on the iPhone. My 2c :)

This is great

I have a movie that i ripped down using Handbrake in my MobileMe folder and I am able to stream it to my iPhone.

Nice job Apple!

BIG time. no contest how much better Air Sharing is than this :apple: app

i got it before the price went up and it's well worth the $$ :D

Aha, so I'm not crazy!

Yes indeed, Air Sharing Pro is a thing of beauty.

Then again, Apple's offering is FREE . . . so I suppose one can't complain.

This is just plain foolish. But if you enjoying paying twice as much each year go for it.

Dude. You are talking about a few dollars.

Please get a life.

I'll pay the extra $ to be able to get renewed automatically every year.

Apparently Apple just pulled the app, citing that it was redundantly offering features already available on the iPhone, such as the ability to sync through iTunes. It will be removed on all iPhones through a Push notification backdoor as part of the MobileMe scheduled maintenance. This outage is expected to affect 2% of all MobileMe users.

+1

It works pretty well, but I really would like to see this integrated into 4.0. You wouldn't have to put your MM credentials in separately, and hopefully it would be accessible by other programs like Mail, Photos, and iPod at least.

Of course, this would all be easier if Apple made a file browser for the iphone and added iDisk access there. I'd even settle for a user space "home only" browser. I think if Apple were ever to make iWork for iPhone we'd finally see a real file browser.

I can't tell you why, you'd have to ask Amazon. All I know is, I've been contemplating MM for months and have been watching the price. It shifts up and down all the time as stock depletes and replenishes. It's how Amazon works - it happens with everything. As they get low on stock or sell out, they drop the price to encourage people to order, probably so they can get a better price on a larger order. I nearly ordered back in June when MM dropped under $65, but decided to just do the 60-day trial first, in case I hated it. This weekend, with the end of my trial looming in a couple weeks, I pulled the trigger on the $57.99 MM (and I get free UPS 2-day shipping as a Prime member) after watching it drop dollar by dollar for the past week or so. I opted not to wait any longer because I don't think the deal is going to last much longer - they're going to sell out at some point soon.

What exactly are you getting in the box?

I ordered the subscripiton from Apple and did not have to wait for UPS just started using it.

How many of you go to Starbucks or wherever and pay $5 or more for coffee of all things every day. And likewise do you go to a bar and drink, or buy your beer and liquor and party at home which is more economical. Do you eat out much or cook at home. All these things are choices, habits, matters of convenience. One person's sense of value for one thing, whether it be MobileMe, coffee, booze, food, entertainment, etc. doesn't equate to another person's.

People pay more because going to starbucks for coffee, or the bar for a drink, or a restaurant for a meal adds some value to the product. Quite often it's the atmosphere you get, but sometimes it's just the convenience. This doesn't apply with all products, however. With products, you get the exact same thing for a cheaper price, and it's a good thing. I'm sure almost every person here would rather pay less for something than more for that same thing.

I got the first year free because I worked at Apple and paid $69 to renew because the manager was cool and gave me the discount. MobileMe is definitely worth $99 to me (and really, more at times), but I'd choose to pay less every single time if I were able to.

It's called MARKETING!
The packaging has changed to the newer version so the older boxes called "OLD VERSION" get discounted to deplete inventory. Like it has been posted here several times, there is no software to install. All you need it the included code. Microsoft does this the same way with the Windows OneCare security software. In the Old Version Mobile Me box I recently received, there is just a pamphlet telling me to go download the latest version, (or words to that affect) and then the code. THAT'S IT! THAT'S ALL YOU NEED!

I'd be a lot more excited about this if it did anything that I've haven't been able to do for months now using either MobileFiles or the (blandly-named) Disk.
