Tried it to see if it would fix defective AirPods Pro 1st generation. It was making static sounds (white noise) sometimes. I thought firmware would fix it because it only happened after a loud noise, like closing the car door. But this firmware update did not fix it.
Apple refuses to replace my AirPods Pro because I just missed the 3yr window on the service program. It doesn't appear to be a "small number" of units affected. It seems that most will fail sooner or later. Disappointed in Apple. I keep looking for an alternative from a competitor, but so far I don't like anything I've tried as much.

Isn’t three (or 4) years the battery limit?
My AP1 (not Pro) were horrible after a year.

AirPods do not last all that long when heavily used. I usually buy 2 and cycle them - I find this helps them last a bit longer.

The AirPods Pro 1 - I had one it developed the static noise - got them replaced by Apple but the replacement ended up having the same problem. So replaced again and then gave them away for free. <shrug>. Haven't had a problem with my AirPod Pros 2.

Didn't they release an update that reduced the quality of the AirPod Pro's noise cancellation feature following a lost in a law suit to a patent troll? I wish there were an option to not allow automatic updates for AirPods. I'm pretty dubious of all updates now.
Lots of conflicting claims but no one ever showed any hard evidence one way or the other.

OK so mine seemed to have updated to the new Firmware somewhere between the afternoon.
I know in the morning when i checked i was on 5B58 but just checking now and im on 5E133.

Truly hope its addressed the battery drain issues i started having from a few weeks ago.

Apple today introduced new 5E133 firmware for the AirPods 2, AirPods 3, the AirPods Max, the original AirPods Pro, and the AirPods Pro 2 up from the 5B58 and 5B59 firmware updates that were released in November and January.

Apple does not offer immediately available release notes on what's included in refreshed firmware updates for the AirPods‌, but the company does maintain a support document with release information.

There is no standard way to upgrade the ‌AirPods‌‌ software, but firmware is installed over-the-air while the ‌‌AirPods‌‌ are connected to an iOS device. Putting the ‌‌‌‌‌AirPods‌‌‌‌‌ in the case, connecting the ‌‌‌‌‌AirPods‌‌‌‌‌ to a power source, and then pairing the ‌‌‌‌‌AirPods‌‌‌‌‌ to an iPhone or an iPad should force the update after a short period of time.

You can check your ‌‌‌AirPods‌‌ firmware by following these steps:
  • Connect your ‌‌AirPods‌‌ to your iOS device.
  • Open the Settings app.
  • Tap General.
  • Tap About.
  • Tap ‌‌‌‌‌AirPods‌‌‌‌‌.
  • Look at the number next to "Firmware Version."
If we find notable changes after the firmware updates are installed, we'll update this article, but the software likely includes performance improvements and bug fixes.

How does ANC degrade as devices age? I don’t get it

Microphones. Bluetooth chipset power. Batteries. Whole host of things working together form “ANC” - it’s not a silver bullet.

I owned a ton of them and every one experienced the same linear degradation.
Dust / grime clogging the mics
Speakers getting dirty
Usage results in reduction of performance over time.

Exactly this. Some people don't want to understand this, though.

Also, tips should be exchanged every couple of months. I do that regularly and I am always surprised by how much better the new ones seal again - which of course also improves ANC functionality again as it isn't as effective without a proper seal.

Ohhh, I didn't know that you should exchange the tips every couple of months. I have never bought new tips, bc the tips doesn't visually degrade (or I just didn't notice)

Does Apple have recommendation, how often you should exchange the tips btw?

Just rinse them with water every now and then and you'll be fine. That's what Apple recommends.

I am not aware of that but Sennheiser and Beyerdynamic have stated it should be done „on a regular basis“ whatever that means. I do it every two to three months roughly.

Got it, thanks for the info!

My ears take different sizes, so I don't have to buy new pairs that often then 😅

I noticed after updating to iOS 16.4.1 that my iPhone 14 Pro "forgot" my AirPods 3. They were still registered on the phone but couldn't connect. I managed to remove and reconnect but when I then stopped using them I had the same issue again later. After this upgrade (5E133) they seem to connect automatically and work again 🙂
