Every time I hear the word Magical, I die a little inside.

It's not frickin magical. It's a computer. I use and enjoy my 64gb 3G iPad regularly - and it is many things - but Magical is not one.

Of all the advertising terms vomited out by the ad industry every day of the week, you pick on one single word and complain about it?

I think the astronomy app made it look like the ipad had a camera that recognized constellations.

It's not frickin magical. It's very very obvious how it works. Accelerometers + Compass + GPS = device pointing at point in sky. It's the opposite of magical.

Most people can't explain how the iPad works, or don't care to know. So to them, the iPad is magical. It's the same reason people believe in God. If they don't know how the universe works or don't care to try, they believe in something 'magical'.

what's the name of the very first cooking app? It has the word Delicious and moist and xxx and whatever after...

thanks! :)

Its derived from the saying:

It works as if by magic.

Therefore the iPad is magical because it works as if by magic.

Relax man, its just advertising.

I know this doesn't belong here but religion is so much more than just "trying to explain how the Universe works"

Best not to stereotype religious views with ignorance and education. I don't know how you got to that comparison. Religious views and the universe are nothing like an iPad.

Very true. It's about comforting oneself and defining oneself against the 'other'. The iPad does both of these things. Is the iPad God?

Just because you can't explain something, doesn't make that magical. I don't know how paperclips are manufactured but that doesn't make the process magical.

The iPad is not magical. And if you ask me (and anyone else that has used an iPhone or Touch), it's just a big Touch. For those who have never used an iPhone or Touch, yes, it's a cool experience...just like when I got my first iPhone...but it certainly isn't/wasn't magical.

$9.99 SUCKA!!!! ha ha ha. PSP ad was way better, not going to buy a PSP, but the ad was good.

Really? How old are you? I saw the PSP ad as preaching to little kids. Like, hey, little geek that rides a bus, get a PSP and appear smarter than that old (19?) guy with a bicycle.

As a grownup, I was quite embarrassed that they would stereotype the speech of both for that matter. Didn't really make either look intelligent. Didn't show off either product. It showed some PSP games that have equivalent on iPhone for half that price, and they sure weren't the best PSP games.

So to summarize the sony ad in lamens terms... "On PSP we have some old titles that cost twice as much as some of the best iPhone games. We have to use a separate device to make a phone call, which we are happy to point out in our ad. We don't have a touch screen, accelerometer, gps, internet, email or any of that so you'll also have to carry around a computer in your backpack. But don't worry, you can store all this gear in the overhead rack on the school bus. We're cool."

Nice ad. What's the music?
My bet is that it was created in GarageBand.

Maybe you can remember the quote, "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from Magic" by Arthur C. Clarke. You might also consider the rebuttal, "Any technology, no matter how primitive, is magic to those who don't understand it." by Florence Ambrose. Quite simply, the iPad is magic to the average user. They don't understand the technology and honestly don't want to understand. For people like you, Barry Gehm has a succinct response: "Any technology distinguishable frm magic is insufficiently advanced."

Still a over priced, over hyped ipod to me....

Sorry.

Don't be. If you can't see the potential in such a device, obviously it's not for you.

The iPad is magical. And if you ask me (someone who has used an iPhone or touch), it's nothing at all like a big touch.

There, we now have two data points in our sample, and they contradict each other. Guess we'd better not try to extrapolate from personal experience, huh?

For many people, it is 'magical', and that's exactly how an insightful marketer sells to them. Not as "it's a computer".

Big fat FAIL.

It is definitely a heavily-used term by Apple, but...

magical |ˈmajikəl|
adjective
1 relating to or using magic : a magical crystal ball.
• resembling magic; produced or working as if by magic : he had a gentle, magical touch with the child.
2 beautiful or delightful in such a way as to seem removed from everyday life : it was a magical evening of pure nostalgia.
There is a definition that fits for many.

Considering its neither Omnipresent, Omnipotent or All Knowing then no, it is not God.

Oh, so we've got a definition of 'God'. Thank goodness. That's cleared a lot of things up. Well, I have seen and held an iPad, which is more evidence than I have for God, so I'm going to have to go with the iPad, as flawed as it may be.

So what parts about the iPad do you find magical? Especially since you have used the iPhone and/or Touch.

So, define magical. And don't open a new tab and go to dictionary.com!

The first iPhone was a pretty magical experience. So was my first Newton and my first Macintosh. Why not? It's a subjective term.

All that said, I too cringe when Apple uses the term. And you are correct. It is a big iTouch. And that is a BIG difference. The screen size is the big limitation in the iPhone and iTouch when it comes to creating software. The touch system is great, but the screen was too small to do serious work or type. Bigger screen. Problem solved. Apple kept things simple. Perhaps their next OS will incorporate all the touch capabilities of the iPad and new screens or input devices will come out. Since Apple devices are also tied to OS designs, they can't just jump forward to crazily. Might paint themselves into a corner.

Dude it's magical.. Just say it.. It's magical.. It feels good to let it out.

*sigh*

I explained the long history of marketing using the word "magical" and still we're getting the geeks who simply will not accept that the whole world does not think the way they do.

It's not meant literally!

So continue to whine about "magical" if you want, but the rest of the world does not care. They know what Apple means and they get it.

You are reading way into it my friend. I believe it's a jab at themselves. Everyone laughed and made fun of Steve Jobs for using the word 'magical' hence why theyre having fun using it here.

Do you describe to your friends that your ipad is magical? No you'll get mocked. It's a joke - get over it

I know the question wasn't addressed at me, but the two devices offer an entirely different experience. The apps on the iPad are designed to take advantage of the iPad's size, and that includes all the programs which tie it together. It runs iOS, but while its ease of use and usability would be readily recognizable to an iPod Touch user, it provides an experience of an entirely greater level. It is truly immersive and delightful.

I was a holdout until last June, but I finally gave in and got it.
Not a purchase I regret in the slightest.
