But hey these were good enough for the perfectionist, right?
And lets not forget it was the perfectionist who wanted an upside down Apple logo:

Aww, I miss "Sex and the City". First season was the best (yes, I admit it, I liked the show).

You do realize that Apple mice have had two buttons for years, right?

Yes, but why, for so long, did they insist one button was the right way? It was this stubbornness that put me off Apple for a long time. It's a smug attitude that riles a lot of people.

I actually agree that plastic is a better material for a phone - it's more durable and technically works better (Wi-Fi/Antenna separation) than aluminium. Shame they couldn't be bothered to rework the black front of the phone or indeed make a black plastic one - I'd probably replace my 5 which is showing a fair amount of wear on the anodised edges with one.

I've recently been re-watching it on the HBO GO app on my Apple TV. I chuckle every time I see that upside down Apple logo. :D

And lets not forget the perfectionist Steve Jobs approved these:

Takes me back; every Sunday we'd get together and have a blast. Was a fun mix of 20-somethings; from jocks to chicks, we were like a Benetton ad. I spent most of my life in the city. The first season was spot on with a lot of obscure humor only a "true" New Yorker could relate.

Most likely 3DS Max/Maya, Blender or some variation. Great programs and used in the the CGI you see in films but take a LOT of expertise to get great results with... :)

Cheers, Jimrod - I figured one of those. Handy skills to know. I'll stick with print and web for the time being :p

I use 3DS Max to design speakers for my company (I prefer a realistic visual to a CAD drawing - easier to get ideas across to others) and I'm just, after a few years getting to the point where I'd be comfortable replacing some stock photography with rendered shots. Animating with realistic physics however is a whole other ball game! :D

And after they sell 80 million or more of these, what will you have to say then?

That numbers don't constitute quality? It's like the old simpsons, it was the best show on tv for a long time, now it's terrible but still watched by millions because it was so funny in the past. All the real afciandos know this.

The only interesting thing about this Apple ad is that it was probably rendered on the new Mac Pro...

In contrast... a phone with a one-piece plastic shell over a strong metal chassis will feel much better in the hand. It feels like a solid mass.

You Apple fanbois feel a lot when it comes to forgetting the past ("Plastic iPhone?! Nevah!"

"You pay for Premium Plastic - and you get what you paid for!"

Damn - I should be in the marketing departement!

I don't know why, but the color seems "off" for me. somethings not right, can't put my finger on it though...

I can. It's spot on what the Chinese market wants:

Image above is a Chinese brand collection that's been around a lot longer than the iPhone 5c.

Like I said... build quality is an important part of a phone.

You can make a phone out of 3 basic materials... metal, plastic, glass

There are good examples of build quality... and crappy examples of build quality.

And because of that... there are good plastic phones... and crappy plastic phones.

Apple's past plastic phones were pretty nice. However, there are many crappy plastic phones from other manufacturers.

You'd be surprised to hear that Apple is not eating their own dog food when it comes to doing real work (i.e. the servers in their data centers are not running OSX).
It's highly unrealistic that the ad company that produced the ad would use hardware that is not yet on the market. I suppose that they used a normal PC (because the available Mac Pros are totally outdated).

My early Blackberries (from around 2000) were made of plastic and they were the most durable devices that I've ever owned. You could (and we did that in the good old days of the dotcom bubble) throw them through a hall, pick them up from the ground and they'd still work.

Plastic is actually much better for a mobile device than alu/glass as it absorbs hits while glass just breaks.
If I'd buy a new iPhone I'd go for the 5C.

And there are a lot of good ones, too. Doesn't change the fact that tons of people around here would immediately dismiss something as cheap crap the instant the dreaded P word came up.

Absolutely.

I was just trying to say that there are good plastic phones and bad plastic phones.

People shouldn't judge something simply because it's made of plastic... (although it happens a lot :) )

There is much more to a phone than just the building material.

Also... you almost never saw a shattered screen on older phones... because they weren't made of glass.

My old Blackberry took a beating many times... although it was a much newer trackball Blackberry Curve.

Aficionados.

You are way beyond typo here mate...

didn't the legendary iPhone 3G and 3GS utilizes a plastic back cover for better antenna results (prior to the iPhone 4 technology)?
Why complain now?

I like it.
I hope it sells well. (Though I'll be getting the 5s to suits my needs)

Before this thread gets too out of control.... think about this. It's sometimes not the material that people have an issue with.

It's build quality.

There are a lot of phones made out of plastic that have removable batteries. By nature, the battery door is usually a thin flimsy attachment. It may wiggle and squeak... and it could make the entire phone feel less than desirable in the hand. After all... it's two pieces.

In contrast... a phone with a one-piece plastic shell over a strong metal chassis will feel much better in the hand. It feels like a solid mass.

Both of those are "plastic phones" but their build quality is quite different.

This is post says it all. Also, people are conveniently forgetting what the 3G/S was all about. That was plastic. It had great build quality (still plenty of second hand ones being used) and didn't get mocked.

I think the 5C is bringing back what Apple did great with the iPhone in the first place and 3G/S making the biggest impact in the market before the Android clones could catch up. It's a cool and well designed product that should of always been the iPhone 5 in black/white and maybe one extra colour before introducing the "C" range on a plastic 5S model.

Bring on Friday! And the advert spells what it's all about. A fun phone with the zing of the iPod Touch design cues.
