You know what this hatred of plastic tells me of Apple fans? It tells me that none of you probably never got to go to Chucky Cheeses and play in a big ball pits back when you were kids, and now you're all lashing out against plastic because you don't want to admit to yourselves how deprived you were.

Plastic is plastic

Cheap is cheap

Both true statements.
But the important takeaway here is that Plastic is not necessarily Cheap, nor is Cheap necessarily Plastic.
Also, Perception is Subjective.
Looking forward to touching one of these phones.

Not much to say other than I love Sleigh Bells! I'm quite a minority though. I seem to remember "tell 'em" or "infinity guitars" was used in Windows Phone 7 or Zune ads or something. It's strange to hear them playing on the other side!

I think it is step back in design, for the sake of costs. Like I said in my post, had they continued to sell the 5 alongside the 5S they would have had to reduced the price as has been historically.

Therefore I do not see the point of the R&D in this new 5C, if it is not just to keep production cost's down for a 2nd tier device.

For me personally, it looks clumsy and cheap next to the recent offerings Apple has produced.

I would certainly not buy a 5C over the 5, if offered at around the same price, would you?

Really, I chalk it the aluminum vs. plastic argument as an eye of the beholder type thing. The C's aren't jumping out at me, making me want to go out and buy one right this second, but I don't think they look at that bad, either. They're decent looking, slightly lower cost iPhones using relatively up to date hardware. For what they are, they're perfect.

If you ask me, it isn't the aluminium that makes the iPhones so nice, it's the glass. This is the reason why I think the 4 line are much better feeling phones than the 5's. The 4 and 4S have a nice heft to them. They're smooth, just heavy enough to feel subtantial, and scream quality. The 5 (and I'll say the 5S since they're using the same design)? I think they're too light and flimsy feeling in comparison. I don't think they're terrible, but I don't like them nearly as much.

It's all about preference. To me, the difference between plastic and aluminium is just that. A preference. Now I'll admit that if all things were otherwise equal, I'd probably prefer getting an aluminium phone depending on how it's built. But if someone comes out with something I really desperately want to get, it being made out of plastic won't phase me at all. How it's built is ultimately more important than what it's made of.

The material and manufacturing cost of plastic vs. aluminium are negligible. It's nothing relevant for Apple.
In fact I think that this aluminium and glass thing that they did over the previous years was a step back in usefulness. It's clearly form over function and not form follows function. A mobile phone is something that will fall down sometimes and glass breaks. Solid metal cases are very bad in absorbing hits.

I have to admit that the iPhone 4/4S looks very nice, but you better handle it with care (and wrap it in one of those plastic cases so that the antenna doesn't get confused...).

Yes, me too. I remember i heard somewhere that it feels almost like ceramic. Really interested in how it actually feels i expect its much better than your average plastic phone.

People are confusing materials with design. Mercedes Benz uses plastic on their dashboards. BMW, Lexus, Acura too.

Design is what makes it work. Design makes it beautiful.

Material is immaterial.

I think that happens to all of us, regardless of if we want it to or not. I'm already starting to see...tendencies. I'm sure in another 20 odd years, my kids will be running up to me, asking how I managed to grow grass in the dead of winter, and I'll say...

"IT'S NOT GRASS, BOAH! IT'S FESCUE! GAWW! Boah don't even know the difference between grass and grumble grumble grumble...:walks away shaking head:".

It's the curse that comes to us all.

True - and the back of the 5C is nice, classy and simple. To me, personally, as someone with no bias on the matter - it looks tacked on to the black glass front designed for the iPhone 5 though. I like the back but would prefer a more cohesive complete design since this isn't a budget phone. In-fact if they'd made a black plastic body it would look great but for some reason they omitted that option...

True to a point.

Plastic is used to lighten the vehicle, just like carbon fibre is used on the Ferrari's chassis.

If I had an vase made from Plastic, Glass, or China, what would you prefer?
Also on that same question, would you be happy paying the China vase value in money on a Plastic vase?

Will we see a plastic back on the iPad mini next?

Very nice ad — seriously glad that it is not saying "Plastic perfected" — "For the colourful" is so much better.

"Plastic perfected" should even be removed as the title for the YouTube upload, imho.

On a different note the 5c is a cool phone, indeed. But I feel the price is €100 / $100 too high for it to be a killer offer. Damn. Apple almost nailed it. Why can't their pricing policy be as aggressive on phones as it is on their tablets?

...

Outside of the annoyingly crappy song used for the commercial, I liked the ad.

I am warming up to the plastic iPhone; for me, plastic works for something that small. Still won't go through the hoops of selling my 5 and paying ETF etc., I'll give it at least a year and see where the contract free carriers are with service etc.

I am sure the same people who hated the Samsung Galaxy because its plastic, queueing for this one and it will sell like hot cakes because it is so ... new ... and .... Appleplastic ...

Why would you create a commercial pointing out the fact your product is made from an inferior (IMHO) material?

I get plastics would be a way to avoid the 'scratchgate' that we saw with the 5. As I imagine you would have to scratch all the way through the plastic chassis to get to another color.

But dont try to make it sound like it is this new, technical marvel that should be applauded.

I will be getting the 6 when it comes out. I just hope they keep a higher end version of the phone available. I dont want a plastic $800 phone.

I just really don't understand why they didn't use white faces with these colors. I'm no fan of the plastic, but at least that way they would have looked brighter and cleaner, sort of a throwback to the old iMacs...this black front with color just looks like ****.

I'm pretty sure this will be the best selling iphone ever. All the middle school and high school kids across the country/world are going to go crazy over these vibrant colors. I think the phone will do especially well in the Asian market too. This phone will be a huge hit and will extend the customer base of apple/iphone due to this new lower price point.

I hope not, at the current price point is not a good way of setting prices for future iPhones so I hope it tanks.

Would it be better if Apple just did what they normally do, which is to sell last year's phone (the iPhone 5) at the $99 price point?

They seem to be trying really hard to convince everyone (maybe even themselves) that plastic is awesome. I guess maybe there's some people out there who would prefer plastic to aluminum and glass, but to save $100? I'll pass.
