Wow....my jaw dropped. Please keep in perspective all of you who are complaining that just one year ago the basic mbp were as follows:

1.83 Ghz CD
512mb ram
128mb x1600
80gb hd
no-n wireless
2 usb vs. 3 today

So in just 12 months the changes are huge! C2D, 1.5gb extra ram! 40gb extra hd!, N, 8600M! for the same price. Eh...now i'm feeling sad :( Time to find a buyer for my mbp i guess...

I've heard the difference is QUITE noticeable. HDD speed is the limiting factor for a lot of things you do on the computer. Won't matter so much if/when Apple adopts/implements the flash caching model, but for now I'd say if you're going to upgrade anything, upgrade to 7200 RPMS. And for gods' sakes, don't get the 4200 RPM higher storage models, just buy some external storage if you need it.

thanks a lot!

Well, how long has it been since the last release of the MacBook Pro till this one. This Macbook Pro is sure NOT much of improvement. I was expecting something great! Like in Speed (3 GHz) and Santa Rosa. Oh Well, Until next year. I do hoped that Apple come out with Somthing Great for the iMac next week. I am looking forward to that. I hoped? :(

Umm... much faster GPU, LED backlit displays, and they DO have Santa Rosa. So what's the problem again?

New High-Res Option on 17" MBPs.

Well, a less-announced feature...
You can now BTO a 1920x1200 display on the 17" MBP!

Sadly, I can't afford a 17" right now ;) And it appears (as mentioned previously) that the 17" model DOES NOT have an LED backlit display.

Oh, and the 15" models now have 8x DVD burners to match the 17" and MacBooks (kinda sad that the normal MB had a faster drive previously).

Oh oh, great news, everything people had been expecting for! I'm waiting for a price-drop for older models :).

can you choose a mbp with glossy screen at the local apple stores? because i want that but will not order online!

I believe you certainly can, it's a pretty common option, so I think they stock them. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

you know what I hate about Apple update? I have to listen to people crying about Apple not adding solid state drive and bluray disc and some free Cinema Displays and blah blah...

gosh I love Apple products but I can't stand some of the fanboys here.

Overall, I think the consensus is that these were strong updates. Not much whining this time. Have you even read the thread?

I'm not afraid to do the actual upgrade, I did it in my MacBook. I'm worried about voiding the warranty, since I've heard upgrading the HD yourself on the MBP voids the warranty.

Apple is very kind about the warranty in my experience. Just don't mention it and they probably wouldn't notice the upgrade. Oh, and don't break anything while you're in there. That of course would not be covered.

Is there THAT much of a speed difference between a 5400 RPM drive and a 7200 RPM drive on a mac. I know with a PC, it is possible to tell the difference, but I feel that every time I use any older mac it still runs smooth oil.

this is not true. you don't see hardly any difference. the only noticeable difference you will see is if you do photoshops and stuff like that....those with intense writing. if you are using it for word processors or playing games and so on, you won't see much difference.

I wonder if the 4GB option will be supported when running XP/Vista in Bootcamp though... I dont know if the Physical Address Extension(PAE) thing is a problem. usually when you want to use 4 GB in a PC laptop, you have to add a premium price, like $1500 ish. However, we only need to add $750 here. Any comments or insight would be greatly appreciated.

Look at the pre-VAT price

Ok here's the deal, the UK minimum price is £1299 that's $2592. I can't believe that difference in price! Its criminal. Even my educational pricing of £1104 is $2204, this is wrong. Sod the DRM stuff and consumers complaining about being locked in etc (I always buy of iTunes anyway) but these price difference are insane. Time to move, but i can't.

Look at the pre-VAT price and it's much closer.

GB£1 = US$2
UK store: MBP17" = £1799 less VAT = £1531 = $3060
US store: MBP17" = $2799

Whilst it's a PITA to pay the extra $260 it's better than yesterday's $460.

And remember they also ship the superior UK keyboard and mains plug:)

Ways to get it cheaper:
1) buy a refurb model - about 16% off
2) buy an edu discounted model. No idea how much cheper - that's secret!
3) fly anywhere and buy one in Dixons Duty Free 17.5% VAT off (and they'll give you a VAT receipt for the rest so you can get that back off of Gordon).
4) buy second hand. I'll flog you my MBP 2GHz for a good price!

Does anyone know what the 7200 rpm drive does to the battery life. Can't help thinking that with all that fast spinning that the power consumption would increase.

I gotta ask...

Do you base your salary on US dollars? What about when the exchange rate was in favor of the dollar? Does your salary magically change based on the current exchange rate? If your salary hasn't changed much, let's say 3-4% a year for the past 8 years or so, then your ACTUAL cost of 1299 is still roughly the same. You can't base that 1299 on what the US equivalent is because your salary isn't a US equivalent.

All of that assuming you aren't in the US military and being paid in US dollars...

RE:RE:RE Shinanigans

One Summer, Many Chips

The events mark the beginning of a busy summer for Intel.

"We plan to introduce multiple chips, more than 10, over the next 30 to 60 days," said company spokesman Bill Kircos. The chips will include a standard desktop version of Conroe--officially the Core 2 Duo--as well as an extreme edition for gamers and other combinations of features and prices.

The Conroe chip will be available to consumers almost immediately, since Intel has already begun shipping the processor to certain channels and manufacturers, Kircos said. Intel will reach full production within 30 days.

The timing is crucial for Intel because the company plans to sell Conroe in the looming back-to-school and holiday seasons, as well as for corporate upgrades planned by many IT departments for the end of the fourth quarter, he said

This is my fear... This is what happened last year...

I haven't yet, which kinda worries me. I want so badly to be in this first shipment.

"Thank you for shopping at the Apple Store online. We're processing your order now. Visit Order Status to view your order details and track your shipment. If you'd like to change your order, please log in to Your Account."

Got the first email and my CC was charged for what I guess is the free iPod.

Thanks to the LED display, the 15-inch model is 0.2 pounds lighter (from 5.6 to 5.4)!

well that makes it all worth it. too bad the price glitches correct themselves, otherwise i'd be in.

LED, Santa Rosa. The wait was worth it.

EDIT: I better edit my sig, now.;)

I was wondering what apple put down as the previous expected batter life for the 15". And what kind of color reproduction is there vs. the previous display.

Are you daft? Or let me rephrase.. are all the newbies posting ridiculous questions here trolls or they simply don't know how to read?

THIS IS SANTA ROSA. Sheesh! Uh.. 3ghz? The Core 2 Duo platform hasn't even reached 3 ghz yet. What else did you want? Oh wait.. you want it to have solar powered cells too right? How about a 1gb RAM video card?

I don't believe the 2.2 GHZ processor is Santa Rosa...

I believe the 2,2Ghz processor is a Santa Rosa part as a) There isn't a 2.2Ghz Core 2 Duo as far as I know and b) the build-to-order options in the Mac store list memory options of 2Gb and 4Gb for all of the new Macbook Pro models, including the 2.2Ghz model. Oh, and C) we've already seen 2.2Ghz Santa Rosa CPU's in other laptops such as the Samsung SENS P55

This is the first BIG update in a while. The only teeny tiny complaint is that 128 MB VRAM on the low-end MacBook Pro is a bit tight but on the other hand it's now the brand new generation of graphics card and not the aging X1600. An 8600M GT not just has the X1600 beaten, but crushed into 10,000 pieces.

If it was a strong update Steve would have done it himself next week. This is about as incremental as you get. Sure, it has the next gen mobo, but in this case the next gen isn't all that much better than the previous gen.
