True, I do want the latest video card. I'm glad Apple put the 8600M GT in but video RAM is cheap to come buy. They've had 128 MB for years and they keep going...
You'll see desktop 8500GTs with 512 MB just to clear stock on older GDDR2.

We wouldn't be having this discussion then. I'd have my new lappy ordered.I'd prefer a 256 CTO option myself for the $1999 model if it makes you feel any better.![]()

If you're going to do dual monitors or a lot of work in Motion I suggest getting the 256 MB video card.I don't play games, but will be doing HD video editing using Final Cut, and some photo editing and before this update was set to get the upper level 15" MBP for the 2gb ram and 256mb GPU, but now that the GPU has been updated and 2gb is standard, would the entry level 15" be all I need? Is it really worth the extra £300 or so for an extra 128mb of video memory? How big a difference would that make?
That's what I was hoping for. I game, I want to run dual monitors, and even OS X itself is demanding more video RAM. Maybe we can get enough people to complain for a CTO option.Agreed. If I had one complaint it would be that the lower model should have 256MB VRAM and the upper models should have 512MB VRAM. HP has been doing it with their laptops for a few months now for a lower price. The only thing that this lack of VRAM worries me about is gaming performance in Vista (not that I plan to do hardcore gaming on a laptop). I know that OS X will utilize this smaller amount much more efficiently.
High-def on 15" is crazy. WAY TO HIGH. USELESS, cause you can't see anything.A. To summarize the most reasonable possible complaints about this otherwise fine upgrade:
-- No Robson (flash) cache
-- No High Definition on 15" models
-- No LED on 17" models
B. Why there is no HDMI output:
Answer: Because it could be to the detriment of AppleTV sales.
C. Multi-touch and Leopard
After these last two laptop updates (MB and MBP), with no touch screens anywhere in the spectrum, we can reasonably expect that multi-touch will not be a top-secret feature of Leopard.
Well, I'm not going to read through 15 pages to see if its been said, so I will sayit anyway.
Price cuts on UK models
15" £1349 - £1299
15" 2.4 £1699 - £1599
17" £1899 - £1799
Only £50-£100 off, but hey... means the prices are coming down in general so we arent paying as much as a premium as our American friends![]()
I have to say, I do like this update, and I'm tempted to get one. However, Penryn will make SR really fly and I'm not due to update until next summer... Hopefully, more price cuts by then!
Granted. But singling one out for not knowing (on Day 1 no less) is pretty petty - they're just trying to do their job...
Great update Apple, well done! Santa Rosa, LED display, 2 GB RAM, updated video card - couldn't ask for much more at all! I'll be placing my order in a few weeks - just want to wait for WWDC to make sure there is no Leopard rebate offer announced with the purchase of new Macs.![]()

emperorquinto said:I think this is all a sham. They pulled the same crap last summer with the Core Duo's. They introduced the new Core Duo last year... with a the FREE IPOD NANO!!! Oh yeah, three months later they had the "Core 2 Duo" with improved motherboards... Okay? Anybody see a pattern? They wait for college kids to take their old inventory and sweeten it by offering an iPod nano. Think about it, they upgraded the MacBook Pro's and MacBook's with "faster chips". No real structural improvement. I don't even think it is Santa Rosa!
PowerBook G3's design was iconic as was the PowerBook G4 Titanium, PowerMac G4, iMac G4....point is all the designs were great but they were updated to even greater designs.
With what? The Sims? WoW? A Mac is not a gaming machine. Unless they run well in bootcamp? Never used a Mac for PC games before.
Well I just went for it, after about 6 months of waiting for this day. Couldn't be any happier right now

Someone posted that these are in fact thinner are they?
The 17" is only 26 pound cheaper for me with HE discount for some reason.
When the 17" was 1899 pounds, on HE it was 1554 pounds.
Now the 17" is 1799 pounds, the HE site says its 1528 pounds.
I also have no pound key on my keyboard in case you were wondering.
I wonder why there is no delay on the 7200rpm drive for 17 inchers, but there is a delay on the 7200rpm for 15 inchers...
