True, I do want the latest video card. I'm glad Apple put the 8600M GT in but video RAM is cheap to come buy. They've had 128 MB for years and they keep going...

You'll see desktop 8500GTs with 512 MB just to clear stock on older GDDR2.

Agreed. If I had one complaint it would be that the lower model should have 256MB VRAM and the upper models should have 512MB VRAM. HP has been doing it with their laptops for a few months now for a lower price. The only thing that this lack of VRAM worries me about is gaming performance in Vista (not that I plan to do hardcore gaming on a laptop). I know that OS X will utilize this smaller amount much more efficiently.

I'd prefer a 256 CTO option myself for the $1999 model if it makes you feel any better. :p ;)
We wouldn't be having this discussion then. I'd have my new lappy ordered. :p

Education discount <3

I don't play games, but will be doing HD video editing using Final Cut, and some photo editing and before this update was set to get the upper level 15" MBP for the 2gb ram and 256mb GPU, but now that the GPU has been updated and 2gb is standard, would the entry level 15" be all I need? Is it really worth the extra £300 or so for an extra 128mb of video memory? How big a difference would that make?
If you're going to do dual monitors or a lot of work in Motion I suggest getting the 256 MB video card.

That's what I was hoping for. I game, I want to run dual monitors, and even OS X itself is demanding more video RAM. Maybe we can get enough people to complain for a CTO option.

A. To summarize the most reasonable possible complaints about this otherwise fine upgrade:

-- No Robson (flash) cache
-- No High Definition on 15" models
-- No LED on 17" models

B. Why there is no HDMI output:

Answer: Because it could be to the detriment of AppleTV sales.

C. Multi-touch and Leopard

After these last two laptop updates (MB and MBP), with no touch screens anywhere in the spectrum, we can reasonably expect that multi-touch will not be a top-secret feature of Leopard.
High-def on 15" is crazy. WAY TO HIGH. USELESS, cause you can't see anything.

And no LED on 17" is understandable since the bigger the screen the harder and more expensive to get LED. I'm sure it would not have been feasible to do it. Very expensive.

But Robson is definitely a legitimate complaint. I'm waiting until Monday to see if there genuinely is no Robson cache. Cause if they say there will be, maybe it will be another 802.11n surprise.

Well, I'm not going to read through 15 pages to see if its been said, so I will sayit anyway.

Price cuts on UK models

15" £1349 - £1299

15" 2.4 £1699 - £1599

17" £1899 - £1799

Only £50-£100 off, but hey... means the prices are coming down in general so we arent paying as much as a premium as our American friends :)

I have to say, I do like this update, and I'm tempted to get one. However, Penryn will make SR really fly and I'm not due to update until next summer... Hopefully, more price cuts by then!

The 17" is only 26 pound cheaper for me with HE discount for some reason.

When the 17" was 1899 pounds, on HE it was 1554 pounds.
Now the 17" is 1799 pounds, the HE site says its 1528 pounds.

I also have no pound key on my keyboard in case you were wondering.

Granted. But singling one out for not knowing (on Day 1 no less) is pretty petty - they're just trying to do their job...

My intentions were not to single her out yet I can understand your view point. From a tech perspective I thought it was a little silly. In no shape or form am I challenging her job competency.

Great update Apple, well done! Santa Rosa, LED display, 2 GB RAM, updated video card - couldn't ask for much more at all! I'll be placing my order in a few weeks - just want to wait for WWDC to make sure there is no Leopard rebate offer announced with the purchase of new Macs. ;)

They are not shipping until after WWDC so you would still be entitled i think

I think this is all a sham. They pulled the same crap last summer with the Core Duo's. They introduced the new Core Duo last year... with a the FREE IPOD NANO!!! Oh yeah, three months later they had the "Core 2 Duo" with improved motherboards... Okay? Anybody see a pattern? They wait for college kids to take their old inventory and sweeten it by offering an iPod nano. Think about it, they upgraded the MacBook Pro's and MacBook's with "faster chips". No real structural improvement. I don't even think it is Santa Rosa!

Um, the Core Duos were released in January 2006, and the Core 2 Duos in August. Hell, October, if you're just talking about the MacBook Pros. That's 10 months! Who cares about a stupid summer iPod promo? This year it happened to coincide with a hardware update; last year it didn't. So?

If you actually paid attention to the hardware news you'd've known about the expected mid-late-summer '06 launch of the Core 2 Duos well in advance. And again, Apple was actually two months late with that as far as the MBP's are concerned.

You'd also know that Conroe is a desktop chip that Apple doesn't use in any of its line, and is therefore irrelevant to this discussion; that the new clock speed, FSB and memory limit specs make absolutely clear that the new MBP update IS Santa Rosa; and that, besides a possible faster model added at some point to the Santa Rosa high-end, there are no major notebook chip upgrades expected until Penryn (late '07 or early '08).

PowerBook G3's design was iconic as was the PowerBook G4 Titanium, PowerMac G4, iMac G4....point is all the designs were great but they were updated to even greater designs.

IMO, the iMac has not improved. The G4 iMac still is the most beautiful computer ever made, it's very hard to beat. That said, the current models are not ugly either, it's just they're not beautiful.

I might some day buy a G4 iMac just for web surfing purposes. It would look great sitting anywhere in my living room :)

With what? The Sims? WoW? A Mac is not a gaming machine. Unless they run well in bootcamp? Never used a Mac for PC games before.

Never used a mac for pc games huh...then your opinion that "A Mac is not a gaming machine." is ill informed. Call of Duty 2 runs really good on my MBP CD 2.16

Shipping time question...

Well I just went for it, after about 6 months of waiting for this day. Couldn't be any happier right now :D

Shipping says I could get it as soon as this Friday, or as late as next Thursday, not too bad :)

I wonder why there is no delay on the 7200rpm drive for 17 inchers, but there is a delay on the 7200rpm for 15 inchers...

I can't find it on amazon's site....where is it?

thanks

I did a search for Macbook Pro on Amazon's site and at the top of the search results it said

"Check out the new MacBook Pros from Apple that have faster processors and other powerful features. Available now for pre-order from Amazon.com.

There was a link there to click.

One thing I hope the next iMac and ACD will have better resolution seeing the 17" can have 1920 x 1200 pixels while the 20" 1680 x 1050 pixels.

Anyone check to see if the stores have the new MBP's in stock yet so those that are close can check one out TODAY?

Hi-Res display at Apple Store

Has anyone by chance confirmed whether or not you can pick up the 17" 1900x1200 glossy display at an Apple Retail store, or if these have to be ordered online.

Are people really that dim that they'd entertain the idea that different markets get completely different displays?

Come on folks, get a grip.

Of course, everyone will get LED-lit screens.

Now, nevermind these new machines I want a whole new small MBP (12" powerbook replacement) announced as the one last thing at WWDC.
Who's with me?

:)

Think, as I mentioned a few hundred posts ago, that in the excitement we're not looking at the bigger picture ... with specs like these, I think we're looking at something significant coming in Leopard: probably to do with running Windows OS's or Apps.

I thought they they were only 5.5 or 6 pounds. Very light for their size. :D

Probably just limited quantities and as I would think the 17" are the lowest selling model they feel they will have enough to meet demand.
