The interesting thing is though, the 160gb 5400rpm vs 200gb 4200rpm, once you fill it to 74gb, barefeats have shown the 200gb is faster than the 160, the transfer rate has dropped to 30mb/s or so i think, but it's faster. So it's more the transfer rate than the spin speed.

Anyone see any benchmarks on the NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT? I'm looking for some that will tell me if the $500 for 256mb of graphics memory is worth it- I hope to be gaming on the system in windows, which that chip should be able to do fairly well.

YES!!!! So many people equate higher rotational speed with better hard drive performance. It's just not that simple people.

I don't think I should carry my wallet anymore or buy a laptop given that then.

You should just get a huge 24'' wallet and leave it at home. That way if someone is running down the street with it, it will be noticeable.

Yeah, your laptop can get stolen. But so can your wallet, car, or even your iMac sitting on your desk at home. As long as your careful about not leaving your laptop laying around randomly, you should be fine.

So it looks like everyone is reporting that the 17" now shows a 4-6 week wait for delivery when configuring with the 7200 RPM drive. Which makes me wonder ... I bought mine this morning with the 7200 RPM (when it still said 1-3 days). So does anyone think it was just a glitch, like with the prices, or will it really ship in 1-3 days? Thanks for any replies!

Will you guys bloody DROP it?

First ever

This is the first time ever, that a mac has the latest GPU technology

Missing the point and commenting with fluff and ignorant remarks... let me break it down for you.

Yes everything can get stolen, but you can do things to prevent yourself from being hurt by it or make it harder for the thief to steal things from you... should I break it down for you even more... or can I trust that you won't be so obtuse?

So is this chipset Mermom or Pennyryn? :D
It's Merom. The overall Intel mobile platform the processor is on is called Santa Rosa.

Thank you and that was funny.

No, it isn't.

But this thread is entitled Apple Releasing New MacBook Pros with Santa Rosa.

Laptop security is relevant to Apple releasing a new series of laptops.

Amount of video RAM is relevant to Apple releasing a new series of laptops.

Online pricing at the Apple store is relevant to Apple releasing a new series of laptops.

Whether or not Leopard will be included is relevant to Apple releasing a new series of laptops.

How good the backlit LED displays look is relevant to Apple releasing a new series of laptops.

The relative merits of desktops versus laptops is relevant to Apple releasing a new series of laptops.

Video editing performance on laptops is relevant to Apple releasing a new series of laptops.

... if you only want to discuss video RAM, then feel free to start another thread and call it "Video RAM on MacBook Pros".
Is there a benefit to moving that discussion now?

https://forums.macrumors.com/posts/3708511/

There are already many threads popping up over the video card and I have replied in those.

I looked over all your recent posts and I don't see any pending questions.

I don't think I should carry my wallet anymore or buy a laptop given that then.

*sigh*

I'm not a rich kid. I'm trying to get the most of my Apple purchase. I don't see a need to spend $500 over the base model when the only significant difference is the video RAM.

An iMac isn't that hard to pick up if it isn't locked down.

There are many questions that have been asked and for which I've been watching for answers. My point is that clearly the discussion here, as it has evolved, is just cluttering up the actual topic.

Yoo-Hoo

I think you are being a tab bit complacent about the matter based on your own location. Check out the facts from websites that sell anti theft software for laptops. You are fooling yourself into believing that it will never happen because you are careful.

And yes... it is a FACT that you may have your laptop stolen if you carry it with you.

Other things that could get stolen: car, lunch, money, wallet, watch, pants, nuclear missle plans.

If you are that paranoid about it you should be using windows.
Also don't beleive everything you see on "Laptop Anti-Theft" websites, it's called marketing.

If you want me to comment on the rest of our debate I can, I'm just to lazy to do it now.

You'd have to be quite the pickpocket to cleanly steal a 17 inch laptop out of it's bag, even on a crowded subway platform!

ps, the school i went to, in Manhattan, 13% of students' laptops were stolen each year, generally from their dorm rooms. (lock your rooms people!)

if you have a room mate, i highly suggest locking your lappy down when you leave it in your room. it may not deter america's most wanted, but it will deter most envious dell owners.

also, i work for a vid company now that sends a lot of laptops onsite to shoots. 8 have been stolen last year. this year we started locking down every single one, and none have been stolen.

that's the whole thing...a "burglar" will cut the lock. some opportunistic schmuck wont...

As I said before I checked your past 14 posts and nothing is pending about the LED backlights, education promo, or video RAM.

Same here. Is it the matter of durability that's having Apple decided to keep the LED backlit screen as thick as the CCFL screen on the 15" MBP?
I don't think anyone would know that today or do a torture test on on!

Does anyone know what the 160Gb 5400rpm drive is they're using, ie. who makes it?
It could be any drive manufacturer.

i think there is misinformation floating out there. use google and read the agreement terms for adc student membership. it does not include software pre-releases, and i'm pretty positive there will be no free leopard to student members--or regular students or any other people who aren't paying many hundreds of dollars for their adc membership. unless of course there is some coupon offered post-wwdc next week (unlikely, but it's just a week away to know for sure). so let's just see what happens.

All released (final) OSes are mailed out in the monthly Developer Mailer, which is included for 1 yr in the student ADC membership. So, assuming, Leopard will be releasing in the next 12 months, you should get a free copy if you are signing up for Student ADC today...
(btw.. it will also be available from downloads section.. i think.)

'am I violating the agreement by disclosing this information? If so, then I didn't say any of this ;)

pal :)

Hahaha

Hey everyone. Been reading this board all day but I might have missed this talk. What's your advice?

I need to run Final Cut Studio 2.

I currently have a Dual 2.5 G5 Tower that I use for rendering color correction but I need a mobile solution to help me do quick rough cuts etc.

Is the lowend 15" enough to run Final Cut Studio 2 and its included programs effeciently? I would do rough video and sound cuts and maybe even rough color corrections. I can't seem to find the specs that say if the new graphics card will work with it completley although I'm sure it will at least run some of the Studio.

If I could take it around with me I would lug a Mac Pro around but alas...

Is there any way to upgrade the graphics card in the 15? Why don't they offer that?

LOL... Yes ANY mbp is enough to run FCS 2

He/She specifically said they were watching to see responses to questions asked, not necessarily questions THEY asked.

Get off your high horse, will you?

Today is historic, apple systems historically have had GPU's that were several generations behind the latest one. However this GPU is state of the art. It even supports blue ray and HD! Plug in an external Blue ray or HD drive and this system will play them without a hickup

not that i'm trying to get in the last word, but i just see serious logical errors here. first of all, i lived in providence for five years during a time when muggings were rampant, and lived in a pretty bad neighborhood in the boston area for a year also. secondly, it would be truly naive to get facts regarding theft rates from companies that desperately want to sell you theft-deterrents. thirdly, the whole reason i posted before is because your wording was vastly exaggerating a very small risk. what you've said above is only marginally less misleading. fourth, i'm not fooling myself about anything: i've already lived with a laptop for many years, some of them in bad neighborhoods, knowing a hundred other people with laptops in the same bad neighborhoods, and none of us had any problems. look, you just don't take your laptop out with you if you're going to be walking at night in a bad neighborhood. the odds of someone mugging you in broad daylight (especially on a busy campus, for example) are just so tiny, and if someone breaks into your apartment, they're going to take whatever computer you have, laptop or not.

sorry, i know people are annoyed by this discussion which is only tangentially related to the laptop updates, but i hope i'm at least as forgivable as the 37 people who kept posting "i can't believe it's not santa rosa! oh well, maybe it'll come out when they finally give us those new LCD displays."
