Umm, when you consider the quality of the case (aluminum doesn't scratch or discolor like the MB) the backlit keyboard (I could never live without this again) and better port options I would DEFINITELY go with the MBP.

i have a PB G4 right now. the point for me is that i hate to see the alu scratched and dented. the MB would be my workhorse where i don't care about scratches. the absolute lower price makes scratches a lot less painful. i never use the backlit keyboard and i don't game. looks like MB for me. but the MBP's are a good value for the money though.

6:00 a.m here on the west coast, so no Apple stores are open yet :) . Anybody in a different time zone call their Apple retail store to see if they're carrying these new MBP's today?

I am ready to upgrade to the new MBP, but would appreciate some advice from anyone who is more knowledgable on the subject than I... My question is whether it is better to go with the 2.2 GHz Processor with an upgrade to 4gb of memory, or go with the 2.4 GHz Processor and stay with the 2gb of memory... Those two combinations are roughly comparable in price. Thanks in advance for any input!

Get the faster processor. Especially if you are doing any rendering, it is processor intensive only.

You can always upgrade the RAM later, for much less $$, from companies like OWC and Crucial.

Does anyone know if the hard drive will now be user upgradeable? I don't want to wait 4-6 weeks for a gd 7200 rpm HD. :|

even if it's opened? the receipt seems to indicate i'd get charged a 10% fee. i'm going to call and see if they even have the new models at the store yet and if i can exchange it when they open.

Odds are you'd have to pay the 10% re-stock fee. Still worth it though. :)

I noticed that too! Apple could have screwed up the prices for the buttons or something. I don't know what the blazes is going on!

Is there THAT much of a speed difference between a 5400 RPM drive and a 7200 RPM drive on a mac. I know with a PC, it is possible to tell the difference, but I feel that every time I use any older mac it still runs smooth oil.

I've heard the difference is QUITE noticeable. HDD speed is the limiting factor for a lot of things you do on the computer. Won't matter so much if/when Apple adopts/implements the flash caching model, but for now I'd say if you're going to upgrade anything, upgrade to 7200 RPMS. And for gods' sakes, don't get the 4200 RPM higher storage models, just buy some external storage if you need it.

It's not hard to do if you aren't afraid of a few screws. Just find the service manual online.

can you choose a mbp with glossy screen at the local apple stores? because i want that but will not order online!

you know what I hate about Apple update? I have to listen to people crying about Apple not adding solid state drive and bluray disc and some free Cinema Displays and blah blah...

gosh I love Apple products but I can't stand some of the fanboys here.

Not Much of An Improvement

Well, how long has it been since the last release of the MacBook Pro till this one. This Macbook Pro is sure NOT much of improvement. I was expecting something great! Like in Speed (3 GHz) and Santa Rosa. Oh Well, Until next year. I do hoped that Apple come out with Somthing Great for the iMac next week. I am looking forward to that. I hoped? :(

And apparently there are no XP drivers for the video card - so boot camp is out unless you are Vista-ing

Do you think Apple won't update bootcamp within a week? Do you think the hardware division didn't tell the software division these updates weren't coming weeks (at least) in advance? The drivers are written and probably being tested this week, and in a few days we'll probably have a new version of bootcamp.

You didn't mention the fugly discoloration (the palmrest of the MB is made of soft sweat and dirt absorbing plastic), but it sounds like you'd be ok with that as well, so I'd say go for it.

I'm not afraid to do the actual upgrade, I did it in my MacBook. I'm worried about voiding the warranty, since I've heard upgrading the HD yourself on the MBP voids the warranty.
