They are different, todays is 1,1 as far as I've seen, and many posts in this enormous thread have described yesterday's file as one of the beta versions meant only for the 3G iPhone so it would definitely be better to switch to todays. I will as soon as I get someone to post a link to it, does anyone have a working link for today's 2.0 software? Thanks!
Also, how has everyone's Push been working?
the icon is just dark. i have it too.Something else I noticed: I downloaded the CheckPlease app from the App Store and the icon still looks sort of dimmed....like it didn't pop to full brightness after it was installed:

And to reiterate everything from before for those of you who don't read the posts before posting, this update switch is necessary because the one from yesterday was designed for the 3G, and if your iTunes does not yet recognize the new software you can either a) wait for apple to re-post it (possibly an updated version from the one above in this post) or b) download this (but do NOT expand it, the easiest way is through FireFox or by changing the automated expansion within Safari) and then hold option (shift for PCs) while clicking on check for updates. Then select the .ipsw file and you're on your way!

Click the image and hold your finger on it until a screen comes up with the option to save.
Can we backup with this method though?
I need to be able to restore the music on the phone back onto it after the update.
Does the backup run when using the SHIFT/OPTION Restore?
That's a bit silly, because this is iPhone firmware and won't work on a Touch. The Touch version should be available for sale in the iTunes store later.

finally worked!!
i almost gave oup on getting the software update done today, but then: it suddently started " restoring from backup" !!!
on my iphone screen it now says " activation alert no signaldetected. signal is required to complete activation"
my phone is almost 3/4 of the way threw restoring.. anything i should get worried about??

When you plug it into a new PC, it should recognize that the phone has been synced to another PC. It will ask you what you want to do from there.
Sorry I can't be more specific, but it's been a while since I synced my phone to a different computer. It will ask for confirmation before it removes any existing data from your phone though so don't worry, just be sure to read the prompts carefully before clicking 'OK'

WHo wants to bet that Apple stopped allowing touch users to upgrade because Apple thinks we are the red headed stepchild. That is my guess.
Also, why couldn't they allowed Touch users to start downloading yesterday and maybe held down the traffic today.

The only thing is after it restores you may not be able to sync apps.
you will be able to sync it but like me i cant get apps on.
and thats because the page where you select what movies and apps and all that you want synced isn't showing up.
itunes will not connect is why
which doesnt make sense.
because i can browse the store.
your music will be there though.
so it will hold off. you can still make calls and stuff.
still says 1.4 is current firmware...arrrrghhhh! went out today disappointed expecting to at least b able to update when i got bak.., for f@**s sake!!
