Can anyone actually download the GM from the App store by redeeming their dev code for the Golden Master? All I get is Developer Preview 7!

SMS relay working great with iOS 8.1 on my 6 Plus, + Yosemite GM. :) :)

OK, so I have updated both my iPhone 6 Plus to 8.1 and MacBook Pro with Retina to Yosemite GM. When opening the Messages app on OS X nothing happened that asked about SMS relay.

In Setting on my iPhone, there is a "Text Message Forwarding" menu that allows me to toggle on and list my Macbook Pro. When I toggle it to on, I get "Enter the code shown on your mac to allow iPhone Text Messages to be sent and received on... MacBook Pro". The messages app opens on OS X, however there is no code for me to enter?

I have tried everything to fix, AirDrop works, restarted all machines, turned on off bluetooth, airplane mode, everything. Is anyone else getting this? Please help if possible!

Love the timing, right in the middle of Windows 9 (10) event.
Wait, what? Windows (10).

Windows 95: Bad.
Windows 98: Good.
Windows ME: Bad.
Windows XP: Good.
Windows Vista: Bad.
Windows 7: Good.
Windows 8: Bad.
Windows 9: Good.
Windows 10: Bad.

Oh, no! They skipped the good version. And they say, 10 will be their »last« version of Windows.

Correction: extremely thin font and font smoothing turned on.
Ok, this one from Shazam page in App Store. Look at all "h", "p", "g", "e", "i", "n"

8.1? A beta?

Yes. I just got done loading it on my iPad and as well. Getting SMS text forwarding to MBP, IPhone 5, and iPad Air is seamless now.

You now have the option to turn off the SMS text forwarding in 8.1, which I think it is very good feature. When you turn the feature on, you are asked to enter the numerical code. And any time you turn it off and back on, you have to do the same.

I'm as miffed as you are. Apparently Windows 9 "wouldn't be right" so they went straight to Windows 10. Wouldn't be right? You mean, too logical?

I won't be getting 8.1 before it's released, I'm not a developer and I don't really trust myself to install it correctly illegitimately. Wanna guess when 8.1 will be available to the rest of us? I'm kinda keen to have the SMS continuity features.

That might be. Fashion and design often go in circles.

Interesting points about the possibility of "3D" interfaces making a comeback one day. In my opinion, despite the fact that fashions do change, I think it would be difficult to start layering on unnecessary UI for the sheer fun of it and simply to make a distinction between brands.

User interface design of the future will have to deal with more rarefied devices, probably more personalised and customisable, that more discreetly fit into our lives, and the room for broadening "flat" design back into a "3D" design will be very limited. In fact, I think UI design will become less about aesthetics and graphics and more about interactivity and discovery in absence of obvious visual elements (where even "flat" design will disappear -- how's that for minimalism!).

I think the long term trend will be to remove UI to the greatest possible extent, putting pure content and connectivity front-and-centre, and relying on the next generation of input devices (possibly even neurally-controlled) that will necessitate the barest minimum of UI in the sense we know it today.

Certainly, I do not believe that fashion and its whims has played a large part in the history of UI design, even where software houses attempt to follow trends in hope of mimicking successful competitors. We're simply moving away from the days when developers "designed" UI (and developers, in my experience, should not design anything!) to a higher level of interdisciplinarity in which graphic designers and less "technical" folk have more input, end to end, in the software development process.

This has led to much more creative, humane UI focussed strongly on users (very much exemplified by Apple) that resists whimsical, presumptive and over-engineered design in favour of an ethical design language that continues to simplify and call less and less attention to itself, allowing content and connectivity to be kings.

It will be interesting to see what's coming up over the next 10 to 20 years.

Is Handoff from Mac to iOS devices working for anyone? It works from my iPad or iPhone to my Mac, but I can't go from Mac to iOS devices.

It's been working every which way for me, for about a week. It just suddenly started working one day having fiddled with the settings and disconnected/reconnected from WiFi on each device. If you Mac is compatible, you'll probably find it just suddenly pops into life each day.

That aside, make sure each device is logged into the same WiFi network and that bluetooth is ON with each device as well. Lots of people are missing that out and it's important because...that's how it works.

----------

Airdrop still doesn't work from iPhone to Mac.

It works for me. iOS 8.0.2 and Yosemite Public Beta 3 (now 4). My Mac appears straight away in Airdrop. Though I appreciate me just announcing that it works for me is not helpful, I just thought you were making a definitive statement which I cared to disprove.
