Apple Releases OS X Yosemite Golden Master Candidate to Developers [Update: Also Public Beta]

Sure, lay off now but the fact is that this is the future of OS X and, one day, you're gonna have to deal with that. You can only stay on Mavericks for so long until Apple eventually discontinues support or drops features and you're forced into a newer version of OS X. It may not be to your taste, but as a Mac user you can't avoid it forever.

I know I can't avoid it forever ... maybe they will wake up and fix it in next major release. For now, there is nothing they have added that I *need*.

Safari keeps showing these... it appears after a website fails to load (which appears to happen a lot after PB4 update).

Still doesn't work for me. I am on Beta 4 and I want to transition to the Developer Previews. Is there a way to do that?

Looks good to me

This might be the first OS X release I am considering not upgrading to. The UI is obnoxiously bright, especially the traffic light colors. The finder UI looks clumsy and I hate the button styles. Many icons look blurry and poorly defined.

I have my Retina Macbook Pro running it, and honestly I am not happy with it. I can't imagine it looks better on non-retina. So I won't be upgrading my Mac Pro anytime soon (Which is my primary home machine).

It's obviously ones personal opinion but I like the new look a lot and I'm on a non-Retina Mac. I've been using it since DP1 and was initially against the traffic light buttons but I am used to them now and I think they may have improved slightly over time. My biggest gripe is with the drop shadow of the windows and this goes back to previous versions of the OS as well. It's too much, would be good if smaller but its no deal breaker. If the UI elements completely screwup usability then its a no no but thats not the case here.

Some animations are stutter/slow. 2013 rMBP 13". Anyone else seeing this? Particularly opening Safari. It stutters as it opens.

Too bad the "flat" Yosemite still has 3d detailed icons.
I was just pointing out to the person who was bitching about the previous icons that what goes around, comes around.

----------

I meant the other bars. Like the ones in safari and finder (on the top) Sorry.
No problem. I only just found out about the Dark Mode and it's been there for quite a while, apparently :)

----------

Can you please lay off the idle chit chat and post any problems that you find with this release so I know if I should install it.

Sure, we'll stop the idle chit-chat just so the thread is easier for you to read.

It appeared in "Purchases" now to download and make an installer

Yeah. You can use this method to make the bootable installer for PB4: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1757723/

The developer golden master candidate 1 is still not available as a full installer though.

But it has now disappeared from the mac dev center, so maybe they are going to release new redemption codes for a full installer of that soon too.

I have Yosemite GM and iOS 8.1 on my iPhone 6 but can't get SMS/MMS relay thing to work. Is there an option somewhere ?

I disagree strongly. I think, generally, there is a clear evolution from the chunkier, grey designs of 20 years ago, to the colourful and accessible skeuomorphic design of the last 10 years, and the streamlined, flatter design of the last few years.

Current design has inherited the best of the past but is setting out to be different in confrontation with that inheritance, making the current trends for "flat" design "modern" insofar as it positions itself against the past.

And this is to assume "modern" as in line with contemporary design trends rather than "modernism" as an art movement, for which the latter term is inappropriate and, indeed, anachronistic.

Eh. Still arbitrary. We've been acculturated by marketing to believe that anything that looks new is more "modern," when in reality it just looks different. This what makes the tail fins on cars argument so ironic. At one time they were marketed as the epitome of modernism. A few years later, it was some other gimmick. The long and short of this is, trendy gimmicks and surface design is not modernism. Changing how things work, making them work better, now that's the definition of modernizing. The rest is mostly gimcrackery.

I'm still seeing "OS X 10.10 Developer Preview 7" in the App Store. Does anyone know how I can download the Golden Master?

I've been waiting patiently for some time for this to be fixed, but it still isn't fixed, even after this update:

When I hit the volume up/down buttons, there's no indicator that it's louder or softer. Normally when you hit it, it makes a small noise as to how loud it is, but I haven't seen it working since the beginning beta days.

Can anyone else try it and see if it works for them?

Should also mention, I'm using rMBP first gen.

I'm using rMBP mid 2014 and the up/dn sound is just fine. I did change the alert sounds though

Well most developers just got the delta update for the golden master. It's much quicker to download and install than a full installer.

But the golden master has now reappeared in the mac dev center and ios dev center.

You need to get a new code for it there and redeem it in the mac app store to get the full installer for the golden master.

This literally just happened a few minutes ago.

You will want to get the full installer if you want to make a bootable usb for the golden master which you can do with these instructions: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1761645/

Odd behaviour of Software update.
I waited a bit before I wanted to restart through notifications, but it disappeared, then pushed the button on update in Appstore, said "Available Updates have changed" in a box, when I pushed the "Show Details" button I got what you see down below in a screen shot, did this a few times and each and every time I get one more entry in "Updates installed...."

Bug

Doing it manually now.

Noticed this same stupid inaccuracy poop on the update summary page when iLife (P,N,K) was updated earlier this summer.

Per the page, Pages never loaded, but I can see it is in the latest level by checking within the app. Also if I install in one user name and look in another user name, the updated in last 30 days list only displays in the user account from which the update was made.

You're right! Thank you.

What's the expectation about this release? I'm tempted to install it on my office computer, but I'm hesitant if there are likely to be issues.

anything that is changed is automatically more "modern." Neither is really accurate. The design is merely different, not more modern.

That's literally the definition of "modern".

adjective:

of or pertaining to present and recent time;

of, pertaining to, or characteristic of contemporary styles of art, literature, music, etc

You cannot directly download a GM version because a GM version has not been released. This is a GM Candidate. You must install DP7 and then upgrade DP8 and then the GM Candidate.

People seems to get it confused..

Handoff (which is where you can start an email on one device and pick up on the other, instant hotspot, and AirDrop) will not work on your Macs

Continuity (accepting/placing phone calls, as well as SMS) will work on your Macs as long as you're running iOS 8 and Yosemite.

are you sure? I'm on beta 4, and iOS 8 and my 2011 MBP doesn't seem to be getting texts? Any advice?

Im on a 2011 MBP. You must update your phone to 8.1 Beta and your Mac to GM Candidate 1. There are new options to add devices to continuity.

So am I and the separated buttons don't look very nice compared to the connected buttons. A lot of UIs make use of connections like that, I've not seen any other applications have buttons like that mainly because it looks 'off'.

Firefox had some weird things going on with their buttons in older versions. Maybe these may change in the next GM.
